Elsie's story is a wake up call for

spaying and neutering of pets.

When she was found she was very

malnourished and pregnant (for

at least the second time). What a

horrible life this gentle, sweet and

handsome dog had before she was found by a good Samaritan in

the Fairview Alpha community, who called the Natchitoches Hope

for Paws. Now Elsie, the Blue Tick Hound, is the mother of eleven

puppies and the resources of this small animal shelter are stretched

to the limit. The angels at NHP called her Elsie, because with her very

pregnant shape and her coloring she looked a lot like Elsie, the

Borden cow.

Pet Tips

Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?

If you have lost a pet, we recommend that you do the following:

1. Contact the animal control office of

Natchitoches to provide staff members with

a photograph or description of your pet. You

may also visit the office to see if your pet

may have been brought in as a stray. You

can reach them at 318-357-3885.

2. If your pet is micro-chipped, contact the

microchip company to see if someone has

called in your pet's information. This is

especially important if your information was not current.

3. Advertise in the local paper for your pet. To do this, contact the

Natchitoches Times at 318-352-3618. A picture of your pet along with

the description is usually helpful when posting notices.

4. Advertise at all nearby Veterinary clinics.

5. You may also contact us at [email protected]. We

will share the picture and description of your lost pet on our Facebook

page.

Finally, if you do get your pet back, please be sure that your pet has a

collar & tag on. We also recommend having your pet micro-chipped as a

form of permanent identification. This is a relatively inexpensive

procedure for a permanent solution.

No Place Like Home If you have found a pet, we recommend

that you do the following,

1. Check the pet for tags and identifica-

tion. If the pet has tags, contact the

owner immediately to let them know the

pet is in your possession. If the pet has

no tags, take the pet to a local vet clinic

to scan for a microchip.

2. You may also report any found pet to natchitocheshope-

[email protected], where we will post the pet's information

and spread the word so that we can return the pet to his/her

rightful owner!

NHFP is looking for volunteers this summer. It gets extremely hot here and

it’s very important that we check on our dogs regularly to make sure they

have adequate amount of food and water. If interested in volunteering

contact Danielle Antoon at 318.332.2969 or

email [email protected].

Heat Hazards

If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child's wading pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in. Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The temperature in-side a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes. Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water. Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun's heat is less intense. Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can burn your dog's paws. Dogs that are brachyce-phalic (short-faced), such as Bulldogs, Boxers, Jap-anese Chins, and Peking-ese, have an especially hard time in the heat be-cause they do not pant as efficiently as longer-faced dogs. Keep your brachy-cephalic dog inside with air-conditioning.

Pete Wardell – Natchitoches Family Eye Care

Debbie Waskom

She is part of a litter of 6 others

who came to us from the Black

Lake area almost 2 years ago. The

momma dog, Daisy Duke has

been adopted along with two

other siblings by one of our

volunteers. Daphne had a home

for a short period of time, until the

family broke up and she came

back to our care. She is loving, good with

children and other dogs. She is house

trained and would be a great forever pet

for someone. The Black Lake pups had a

very bad start in life, they are all waiting

for their chance at a forever home! (She

is spayed and up to date on her vaccina-

tions). Contact us if you are interested in

adopting this sweet girl!
