    Western Conference

    Vancouver Canucks (1) vs. L.A. Kings (8)

The Vancouver Canucks were the Presidents trophy winner for the second year in a row, but with that comes th

knowledge only seven teams since 1986 who have won that trophy have won the Stanley Cup as well. The Canuc

came within one game of winning the Stanley Cup last year but can they get back to the final to seal the deal?

This is the second time in the past three years that the Canucks and the L.A. Kings will meet in the first round of t

playoffs. The last time they faced off in the playoffs, the Kings gave Vancouver all they could handle. The questio

this time around is with Daniel Sedin coming off an injury, how effective will last years runner up be? The Kin

used a pair of trades this year to re-unite Mike Richards and Jeff Carter after they were sent packing by the Flyers.

St. Louis Blues (2) vs. San Jose Sharks (7)

St. Louis appeared to be well on its way to another season of almost but not good enough until they changed th

head coach, bringing Ken Hitchcock into the fold and the rest, as they say, is history. The Blues recovered from the

early season swoon to take the second seed in the ultra-competitive Western Conference. With Jaroslav Halak and

surprising Brian Elliot sharing duties in net this year, the Blues seem to have found the solution to keeping the pu

out of their net, but they will have to ride a mixture of savvy veterans and a host of players who are only known

within a 2 square mile radius around St. Louis to victory in their first playoff series since 2009.

San Jose has been the regular season darling for a number of years, but the team always seems to collapse once t

pressure cooker of the playoffs came along. Now that the Sharks have fought their way into the playoffs this yea

do they finally show what they can do in the playoffs? The team will be led by Patrick Marleau, Logan Couture an

Joe Thornton but this trio has left their fans wanting in previous years.

Phoenix Coyotes (3) vs. Chicago Blackhawks (6)

After getting tossed out of the tournament in the first round by eventual finalists Vancouver last year, the Chica

Blackhawks should be hungry to retake their position of one of the Western Conferences elite teams as they a

only a few years removed from winning the Stanley Cup. With Chicagos captain Jonathan Toews being on t

sidelines for the last 22 games of the regular season, there is room for doubt as to his effectiveness when and if

returns to the lineup. If Toews is unable to return, the pressure will fall squarely on Patrick Kane and Marion Hos

to carry Chicago through the playoffs.

No matter which way you look at Phoenix, this is a team that just wont go away. If they missed the playoffs instea

of claiming a playoff spot they may have just disappeared from the league to resurface in a new home north of t

49 parallel but it was not to be. Many wrote them off before the season began after Ilya Bryzgalov left for greenpastures but Mike Smith was signed, and all he did was carry the team on his back to their first divisi

championship. This team will need to win a round before many people will take them seriously but th

goaltending has proven that it can handle the load when its needed.

Nashville Predators (4) vs. Detroit Red Wings (5)

This is one of the most compelling series for the playoffs this year. The Detroit Red Wings have been a perenni

powerhouse in the NHL, finding themselves in the playoffs every year since the 1989/90 season. Nashville has fina

come into its own and posted a very strong record in the regular season for the second season in a row. Nashville

late season addition of Igor Radulov managed to frustrate the other 29 teams as Nashville was able to add a snip

to their roster without having to subtract from their roster or giving up a collection of draft picks.

No matter which team gets knocked out of the playoffs, the losing teams fan base will be left with little more th

a sense of disbelief that their teams strong regular season was followed by getting knocked out in the first round.

always seems like Detroit seems to find a way to get to at least the conference finals and Nashville needs to show

up and coming stars (Shea Weber and Ryan Suter) that they are within striking distance of the Stanley Cup befo

they decide to take the free agency dash out of town (possibly to Detroit).

Investment Advice for NHL Playoff Draft Pools

The NHL post-season buzz is accelerated when individuals meet with their friends to make their picks for th

playoff pools. Many who in general dont participate in sports pools cannot help but participate in an NHL play

pool. There are many different types of pools from which persons can choose from, but many of them a

structured in a very similar way. Many pools have each member participate in an NHL player selection draft whe

every pool participant will have opportunities to make their player selections in a fair and organized fashion. Tend goal is always the same, whichever poolie has selected the fantasy team that obtains the most points in t

NHL playoffs wins the pool. Byrons Special Analysts were asked to imagine themselves giving advice to people w

are about to participate in a player draft playoff pool. The following contains some NHL playoff pool selection adv

that was prepared by Byrons Special Analysts.

    Investment Rating Criteria

STRONG BUY: For conservative poolies, this represents an attractive value where the player is expected

produce significant points in this years postseason

BUY: For speculative poolies, this is considered a BUY but in the analysts opinion possesses certa

risks that may be higher than average due to the player being streaky, having little post-seasexperience or may play for a team that is not expected to get into the later playoff rounds.

HOLD: The player represents a reasonable late round pick in your playoff pool.

SELL: The player represents poor value in that the player may be considered a candidate for a hi

draft pick in your playoff pool; however, the players point production in this years post-season

expected to be disappointing and is expected to depreciate over the postseason.
