Big on Bloor Festival NHT was Big on Bloor for the annual street festival held in August. The two day event featured singers, musicians, artists and over 200 arts, crafts and information booths. NHT proudly set up their own table at Dufferin and Bloor. Residents enjoyed the beautiful weather and celebrated the event with the rest of the Bloordale community. It was a great opportunity to experience this diverse neighborhood and enjoy the variety of food and amenities it has to offer. Big on Bloor is an annual event you don’t want to miss - mark it on your calendar next summer!

NHT Celebrates Canada • 148 years young Canada Day was a huge celebration here at NHT! On July 1st residents, family, friends and staff gathered in NHT’s newly finished parking lot for a B.B.Q. and Canada Day festivities. The event was held under a festively decorated tent and featured games, face painting, a raffle and a cotton candy machine. There were performances by magician, Jason McConnie, and musician, Brian Gordon and a special appearance by Davenport MP, Andrew Cash, who played his guitar and sang for the NHT community.

Bon Appetito - Italian Night Out NHT residents travelled to the Esplanade to go to the Old Spaghetti Factory, a converted Blacksmith shop that has been a Toronto tourist destination since 1971. Residents enjoyed the fine antique decor, including a 100 year old carousel while dining on a traditional three course Italian dinner. Menu options included traditional soups, sauces and baked breads, with a myriad of pasta dishes and lots of gourmet dessert choices. It was truly a unique dining experience filled with laughter and good food!

Special Thanksgiving Dinner At NHT our Thanksgiving holiday wouldn’t be complete without a traditional delicious Thanksgiving dinner. Our Special Thanksgiving Dinner was held on October 12th for residents, staff, friends and family. The menu showcased favorites like Maple Roasted Turkey with Apple and Sage Stuffing as well as Baked Honey Glazed Ham with Pineapple Dijon Sauce. The three course dinner was held in the decorated dining room and the night ended with a stunning piano performance by the talented Beatriz Boizan.

Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer. New Horizons Tower is thankful for all our volunteers. NHT volunteers offer skills they have, gain work experience and give back to our non-profit community.

Acts of kindness and volunteer work can provide the following effects:

• A good feeling about oneself.

• A feeling of connection to others.

• A sense of meaning and greater purpose in one’s life.

• Perspective

• A reminder to feel gratitude

• An opportunity to use one’s own unique gifts.

• A good distraction - something to think about other than one’s stress.

If you would like to share your time as a volunteer with NHT there are many fun and rewarding opportunities that await you. Just let us know your interests and we would be delighted to see you here.

“I just wanted to say a big thank you to you all on behalf of my mother, Barbara. She said

again yesterday during my visit how good everyone is to her. We understand too well the patience that is required for the work you do – thank you for so often going above and beyond!

Kind regards, Jacqueline

Ken Sweatman, Executive Director

We are grateful for the generous support received from residents, family, volunteers and benefactors. This support is greatly appreciated and enables us to continue to enhance and enrich the lives of our residents who call New Horizons Tower home.

This past year we are thankful for even more improvements at NHT from fully operational elevators, together with additional renovated studios, one and two bedroom suites. The completion of the Dufferin TTC station with senior friendly elevators and a bright new look enhance our ideal location.

There is no doubt that we could not do this without your support. We thank you for the faith you have placed in us and wish all our residents, staff and family a joyous 2016!

It is my pleasure to share with you the view from here.
