Dear Alumni, Friends, Parents, Faculty and Staff of Nichols College,

As a proud alumna and the 2011-2012 President’s Societychair, I want to thank you for your continued support ofNichols College and for playing a part in its success. Each year, I am energized by the commitment of the Nichols community and the things which we have beenable to accomplish.

Here are a few of our fundraising achievements this year:

• More than $3.3 million was raised in restricted and unrestricted gifts.

• Eighteen alumni joined the Colonel Conrad Society, ensuring that Nicholswill remain a part of their lifetime legacy.

• Thirty-three new donors took steps to support Nichols.

• Faculty and staff participation rose to 68 percent, nearly doubling last year’s rate.

• With the help of a committed Nichols community, we were able to raise the number of endowed scholarships to 15.

Even in uncertain times like these, I am proud that our alumni have cometogether in support of the College, and I appreciate your commitment toNichols and the students it serves.

This fall the College is opening the new student center, a facility that is des-tined to transform Nichols, thanks to the generosity of alumni and friendswho embrace the potential of this special place on a hill.

Almost every person in the country has benefited fromthe quality, value, and innova-tion of products manufacturedby two local companies, Hyde Tools and Dexter-Russell, located in Southbridge,Mass. As innovators in the fieldof handheld tools and cutlery,each organization has made significant advances withintheir fields; however, it is theunwavering loyalty to theircommunities which truly setsthem apart. The companies were joined

together in 1968, when HydeManufacturing purchasedRussell Harrington. Althoughboth companies had supportedcommunity projects, in 1982Robert U. Clemence, formerchairman of Hyde, formed theHyde Charitable Foundationwhich formally articulated acommitment to Southbridgeand Southern WorcesterCounty. Since 1982, the compa-nies have reorganized into sep-arate ownership as the HydeGroup and the Affinity Group,and Russell Harrington is nowknown as Dexter-Russell, yetthe belief in supporting thecommunities where theiremployees live has alwaysremained constant.As America’s first cutler with

manufacturing roots linkedback to 1818, Dexter-Russell hasbeen employing, training and

advancing local workers foralmost 200 years. Making a con-certed effort to give back to thelocal community Dexter-Russellrecently revised their missionstatement to include that they“will honor our role in commu-nities and support areas whereour employees live.” NicholsBoard of Trustees member,Alan Peppel MBA ’98, chair-man of the Affinity Groupwhich owns Dexter-Russell,states that he “was astoundedat how strong our mission state-ment connected with ouremployees and how important it is for us to continue to stayinvolved in their communities.”Thirty years and numerous

charities later, one can see thepositive impact that the Hyde/Dexter-Russell CharitableFoundation has had. This yearalone, the Foundation has been able to aid in the repair of an ailing infrastructure at the Southbridge CommunityCenter, assist the YMCA camp, its main facility, andOld Sturbridge Village, andprovide funds which link thelocal middle school with theEcotarium in Worcester. “Welike to help capital projects – thebricks and mortar – for organi-zations that benefit our employ-ees,” says Dick Clemence, chair-man of the Hyde Group. With three of the five current

Wealso recognize that many of thestudents who live in town andwho attend Nichols may notboard there. Having a place that allows students a con-ducive place to study and graba cup of coffee is good for allstudents, but specifically thosewho commute from bedroomcommunities like Southbridge,”Peppel says.In the past dozen years,

the Hyde/Dexter-RussellCharitable Foundation has con-tributed over $250,000 toNichols, confirming their com-mitment to the College as wellas the local community. Tools and Dexter-Russellunderstand the importance ofhigher education to their com-munities and are committed toits success. Dick Hardy, formerchairman of the College’s Boardof Trustees and current trusteeemeritus who is chairmanemeritus at the Affinity Group,notes, “One of the things wewere always conscious of onthe College’s Board was that wewanted [Nichols] to be a lowcost business school by stayingunder the average tuition, andwe worked very hard to keepthat true.” Hardy continues towork diligently on this promiseas Nichols moves to fund thenew student center completelywith the support of alumni andfriends of the College. Russell continue to make histo-ry locally, it is clear that theywill not be alone in celebratingtheir success. The true impact ofthese organizations goes deepinto the roots of their communi-ties, making a difference forgenerations to come.
