There are a million reasons to support Nichols School. What was yours?

My wife Nannie and I support the annual fund initiatives at schools and colleges that have given so

much to our family. The number of schools we support is only growing. Perhaps this is what happens

when you are raised on a school campus, attend a number of schools, colleges and graduate schools,

work in schools and then send your own children (who themselves were raised on school campuses)

to their own schools and colleges.

Why do we continue to support so many schools, including those we left years ago?

We know the life-changing power of Nichols, and the lasting impact philanthropy has on our

students. I recently heard a perspective on philanthropy from a family friend that I find

compelling: “To me,” he explains, “It is simply regular, thoughtful giving for the benefit of

others, and it is best when it is rooted in love.” I often remind our students that one of the

great privileges of attending Nichols is that they are known and loved.

Perhaps some of you are put off by the word “love.” Weak. Four letters that bring to mind

a soft approach. I believe otherwise. To me, love is preparing thoroughly, grading diligently,

listening intently, speaking honestly, playing passionately, arriving early and staying late.

It is holding oneself accountable in order to help others do the same. It is hard. It requires

work and commitment.

Reflecting on his time at Nichols, a senior recently shared a revealing comment about

his favorite teacher. “I fought with her for four years,” he said, “and I love her for that.”

Asked to explain what he meant, he paused, smiled wryly and exhaled: “She held me

accountable. I didn’t like it, I didn’t make it easy, but I needed it.” We will see his name among ours

in future annual reports.

Our goal this year was to raise one million dollars towards The Nichols Fund—not only did we

make our goal, but we set a new record! This remarkable community effort not only helps ensure the

transformational nature of a Nichols education, but it also provides a powerful model for our current

students as they grow to understand for themselves the potential power of paying gratitude forward.

The Class of 1980 set an all-time Nichols record for number of donors from a single class in a given fiscal year: a whopping 62 alumni! In addition, 1980 had 44 classmates attend their 35th Reunion in June, and they raised an impressive $80,244 (a record for a 35th reunion). These achievements are due primarily to the unwavering leadership efforts of the 35th Reunion Committee, especially Kristan Andersen, Marie Christy Conger, Bill Gurney and Nelson Walsh. № 875: Give back to the school that helped shape my life.

For Virginia Wettlaufer Tomenson ’98, including Nichols in her estate plans is a way of giving back to the school that helped shape the course of her life. Friendships formed as a student propel her to support Nichols, and she hopes that by giving to Nichols others will continue to benefit from the strength of the Nichols community that she values so dearly.

Gina, and her husband Walter Tomenson, live in New York City where she works in business development for Studio Sofield. She feels strongly about supporting Western New York, and in particular Nichols, stating, “Nichols is a defining part of who I am today. While I may not live in Buffalo, Buffalo will always be my home. Since I do not have a physical presence in Buffalo, it is important for me to give back to the infrastructure of the community to ensure continued resources for the future. Supporting Nichols means that I am helping Buffalo’s leading independent school to endure for generations to come, giving its students an opportunity to share in the same wonderful experiences I had, and its ability to uphold a continuing tradition of excellence in education.”

Caring teachers, well-rounded students, and opportunities galore are phrases that come to mind as Brian Dillon ’76 reflects on his experience at Nichols. Brian is an eight year veteran of Nichols School, which he believes was a tremendous benefit to his life by providing him with an excellent education that set the groundwork for his future. In 2009, Brian founded Positive Retirement Outcomes, LLC, which provides independent retirement plan management and fiduciary services with no conflicts of interest. Brian and his partners seek to create positive retirement outcomes for employers and their plan participants.

Brian wants to ensure that Nichols School continues to serve the Western New York community for generations to come and has named Nichols as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, which allows him to make a meaningful contribution without having to part with any current assets. As a professional who understands the importance of retirement assets, Brian believes that naming Nichols as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy is one of the simplest gifts to make. Nichols School is a community with a tradition of philanthropy at its core. Steadfast annual support of Nichols’ educational mission truly enhances the School’s margin of excellence. Your annual gifts, whether to The Nichols Fund, or designated to some other facet of the school, are critical to keeping Nichols at the forefront of independent schools in Western New York.

You can ensure the annual amount you have been giving is continued after you’re gone.Perpetuating your annual support can be as simple as adding a bequest to your estate plan, naming Nichols School as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or a deferred compensation plan, or via some other deferred gift vehicle that designates a certain amount or percentage from your estate to support Nichols forever. Endowing your annual gift ensures that Nichols continues to have the resources to sustain the school’s immediate needs and to meet its long-term goals.

The process is very simple:Multiply the current or desired amount of your annual support by 20. This amount will become your goal for your endowed gift.

For example: John currently gives $1000 per year to The Nichols Fund. In order to continue to give that amount after he is gone, John makes a bequest of $20,000 ($1000 X 20) to Nichols School. The School currently pays out approximately 5% of the endowment’s value as calculated annually. Therefore, the annual calculation of 5% of $20,000 in our endowments matches John’s $1000 annual gift goal.

Even better news is that Nichols projects an average annual return from our investments of 7%. If we annually pay out approximately 5% we’re able to reinvest the remaining 2% and grow the principal for bigger payouts in future years.

Contact a member of Nichols’ Gift Planning Office to discuss the best vehicle for your gift. In addition to a simple bequest, there are other ways to make a gift to benefit Nichols while providing a tax benefit to the donor. For example, you may want to learn more about transferring highly appreciated but low yielding assets (securities, real estate) into a lifetime income stream for yourself, after which the gifted asset will pass to Nichols for your intended purpose.

PS: Should your bequest or other deferred gift total $100,000 or more you may choose to establish a separate named scholarship or other endowed fund designated toward that facet of Nichols most important to you. Such an endowed fund would continue your support of that designation as long as Nichols School endures.

№ 127: To establish an endowment that will benefit the school forever.

Robert S. Scheu ’38 and Martha S. Scheu recognized the importance of humanities in education and through their foresight, dedication and generosity established a permanent endowment to benefit the school in perpetuity. In 1992, the Scheus established a charitable remainder trust. By creating a charitable remainder trust, Bob and Marty were able to support Nichols, while maintaining an income stream for themselves during their lives. At the end the trust term, the remaining trust assets were used to fund The Robert and Martha Scheu Endowment in the Humanities.

The goal of the endowment is to provide opportunities for interdisciplinary studies, professional development and student financial aid. As a result of the Scheu’s gift, students and educators will gain an enhanced knowledge of the humanities through field trips, faculty enrichment, visiting scholars and student projects. Bob felt strongly about the importance of humanities and wanted to provide an opportunity to enhance that element of a Nichols’ education for generations to come.

The Scheu’s charitable remainder trust enabled Bob and Marty to significantly increase their gift to Nichols while retaining the right to receive income payments for life. Furthermore, they received a charitable income tax deduction for a portion of the value of the assets that were placed in trust. At the end of the term, the trust assets were used to establish an endowment to benefit the school forever.
