Bill’s BS by Bill Stewart 08/31/13 Well, it’s been a while. Sorry for the delay. Misery Bay seemed to be everywhere in June. While I was at the Majors races at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Charlie Campbell won a Majors race overall in his FP Miata at Mid-Ohio and we had another great Solo at LES. Fantastic to see so many novices. I see that Mark Aubele came up from Pittsburgh. We used to see him often at Edinboro. The next weekend, a dozen of us traveled to Lakeland Community College for Neohio’s first Solo of the year. Next, I was at Nelson Ledges for the big Porsche Club DE and 944 Fest. Great event, over 100 cars with a steak dinner thanks to Beachwood Porsche. I was back at Nelson the next weekend with Dave Hammer, Debbie and Mark Swick, Jay Dumbeck, and Bob Mazza for the Finger Lakes Region’s Westward Ho! Regionals. Bob was really impressive in his STU Toyota Celica, winning the first race on Saturday, his class in the second race, and both races on Sunday. That Sunday, we also had our first official Out of Region Solo with Western New York up at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Nick Simon was the most successful of our 17, winning Street Modified. We had 5 Novices make the trip. Good Show!

July started with an insane weekend for me. Friday, I was up at Watkins Glen to help get the Majors/Super Tour weekend started. Charlie Campbell was up and down, winning FP when Kevin Rauch got a flat on the last lap. Charlie’s luck disappeared on Sunday, he only made 5 laps in FP. In Spec Miata, he went from 25th to 18th on Saturday, but could only move up one, from 15th to 14th on Sunday. I missed all this drama as I was in Pit Lane for the very last National at Nelson Ledges, Neohio’s Firecracker. The schedule conflicts really killed the entries. The big bore race did feature 3 former National Champions and I believe 2 new track records were set. Both Greg Vandersluis in his T4 Mustang and Tom Sloe in his T2 Corvette and AS Mustang showed why they should be contenders at the Runoffs.

Next up was the Chump Car 14 Hours “Shortest Longest Day”. The “Biohazard” Turbo MR2 won with 548 laps completed. After a nap at home, I was off to Pitt Race and the start of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. I missed our Walt Peterson in his Austin Healey 3000, but Bill Tobin was there in his Triumph TR6. They had so many beautiful cars, and every time I go there, they have made more improvements.

at Neohio’s Firecracker NationalThe weather was nice for our July Solo, but all the computer glitches put a real damper on things. In working on the results for this issue of the Pit Signal, I discovered that several folks did not have their PAXes calculated. Windows 8 ??? Hey 7 runs are always fun. Where do we get so many Honda S2000s? And that sweet Nissan GT-R! Nick Simon proved again that you need more than just horsepower. So glad I could make it!

I wanted to finish July with the trip to the Toledo Pro Solo, but registration overflowed before I could even try. Nick Kelly, Nick Simon, Matt Curry, and Logan Flaherty did make the trip, but no trophies. WNY’s Dale Kunze was 4th in STC. Hey, we need all the experience we can get. Back in Erie, I spent a wet evening at the Cruisetown with Charlie Jewell across from Molly Brannigans. One of the motorcycle patrolmen has a Cayman too. But very few cars came out in the rain.

So, August is now over, and I’ll have the next Pit Signal out soon, I promise, with lots to report on our Solo at LES, the Nationals at Pitt Race, and Pocono. The Neohio Club Trials at Nelson and the Solo at the airport never happened. I have some interesting tales from some Porsche Club social events too. The Nationwide race at Mid-Ohio was uhh, interesting.

So, our Out-of Region Labor Day dual event was never approved by Lakeland, but at our short August meeting, we approved the Neohio Solo September 15th as our second Out-of-Region Solo at Lakeland Community College just to the left of the Kirtland/Mentor exit 193 on I-90. It’s just over an hour continued on p.9

Bill’s BS continued from Erie. Be sure to make it! We hope to add a Solo School on Saturday to our September 22nd Solo at LES with support from Charlie Jewell and Rennsport Tuning. Speaking of support, we now have major awards at our Solo events from Tires for Less at West 26th & Powell Ave. Major thanks to Michael Schick! I’m almost sorry that I will miss this, to be at the Runoffs at Road America, working the pits with Dave Hammer. Of course, Charlie Campbell will be in his FP and SM Miatas. This is the 50th Annual Runoffs, with over 700 entries. I can’t wait.

The Mahoning Valley Golden Harvest Weekend at Nelson Ledges, ends September with some real bargains. If you ever wanted to try racing, or have access to a Chump Car, or other SCCA race car, the CRE, Club Racing Experience is ONLY $50! Not that adventuresome ? The PDX on Saturday is $60 and the Club Trials on Sunday is only $100. I suppose that you could enter all 3. This could really be interesting. Check with Reed and Sandi Kryder at kryderacing.com. We certainly had a ball there in May.

Our last Solo at LES is October 6th. Remember you that must have run 5 events and be a Misery Bay member to be eligible for a Year End Award. And Misery Bay is very generous with out awards ! Saturday, October 12th is Neohio’s Johnny Appleseed Rally, followed by their Solo at Lakeland on Sunday. The racing season at Nelson then ends with Neohio’s Spooktacular Quad Regionals on the 19th & 20th. October would not be complete without our Covered Bridge Rally on Sunday, the 27th. Experts, beginners, and whole families can enjoy touring over a dozen covered bridges, including the nation’s longest and shortest. The leaves should be picturesque too. And of course, lots of prizes.

You just might have noticed that our website was down for almost a month. It was originally built by Gary Neckers and after Jeremy took over, it still resided on Gary’s server, which Maplevale Farms eventually changed. The folks there didn’t realize what it was, so they didn’t know to warn us. Jeremy has moved it to a new home, but with the same address and now has it back up, but we lost about 6 months of the forum. New member, Sam Mehler, has volunteered to help rebuild. I bet you missed it as much as I did. So, come on back!

OK, listen up! The September meeting is coming up and we MUST start nominating officers for next year. Logan’s term is up. He has brought a lot of energy, enthusiasm, and a lot of new members into the region. We had our first winter rally in memory, we had folks doing the PDX and Club Trials. We had more folks going to out of region and National level Solos than ever before. Now some of the new, and some of the old need to step up to build on this enthusiasm. It doesn’t have to be difficult, it just has to be organized. We need to ask for help and delegate.

So come on out to the September meeting at the Cornerstone, talk about the future, step up and volunteer.

See You There! Bill
