R E A D I N GWhat can we learn from hearing about other people’s experiences?
How can you include yourself in the world community simply by learning
that you belong? The most important lesson we receive from opening
ourselves to other people's experiences is that we can relax, we are not
alone.
The interview you just watched with my client Mickey was included with
two intentions in mind: to inspire you by hearing someone else’s story,
and to let you know you are not alone. When I met Mickey, her physical
symptoms were completely owning her life. She had undergone several
surgeries which hadn’t solved her physical problems. Her ankle was
physically swollen with no good reason, her sciatica was agonizing, and
she was really, really scared.
To know her a little better, here is a bit of what Mickey has written about
her experience, in her own words.

Nicole gave me the inspiration to do my own work on chronic pain.
Following her lead, I managed to overcome years of sciatic pain, swollen
ankles, knee pain, muscle spasms, numbness and tingling in my back and
legs which greatly impacted my daily activities. I had been treated by
many doctors, chiropractors, acupuncturists, massage therapists and
undergone back surgery, knee surgery, physical therapy and numerous
steroid injections to my spine, but none of it ever eradicated the pain.

LEARNING FROM OTHER 'S EXPER IENCES
It took effort on my part to learn how to uncover limiting beliefs about
myself, and to retrain my brain to not create chronic pain in my body.
Nicole's method of journaling and releasing the depths of my feelings
onto paper was the turning point in my healing. I was fortunate enough
to have the opportunity to eventually work with Nicole and further
strengthen my ability to communicate with the part of my brain which
was stuck in overdrive.
I couldn’t believe it. As I trudged along doing this work which scared
and confused me, the pain began to melt away. I was back to walking,
hiking, dancing, and playing golf. I still do the personal excavation work,
digging around in my thoughts and releasing my emotions via
journaling. It is something that I will continue to do for the rest of my life
because of the relief and peace that it brings me.

I know that everyone is different, and Mickey’s story is not necessarily
your own. I include her because she had gone through so much, and
when she arrived on my doorstep she was ready to try anything. I want
the same desperation in you. If you don't feel it, just fake it ’til you make
it! I want you to, as Cheryl Strayed says, lay yourself open to be gutted.
No one is listening but you. There is so much more to life as soon as you
get this.
You are not alone in your pain and your fear. I need you to understand
that your perception is your reality. If you believe that you are beautiful,
you are beautiful. No one else’s thoughts can ever be truly known to you,
so in the end it’s your own thought process which creates your existence.
If you feel as if you are alone, you are alone.
I’m here to tell you that you are not.
And I have proof. Mickey and I are just two people, but there are millions
more out there just like us. Just like you. I have worked with most of
them. Actually, I have worked with all of them. Why? Because every
one of you is the same as every other one of you. When we hurt, we
hurt the same. Remember that the woman standing over her dying child
in Syria is the same as the woman standing over her dying child in the
finest hospital in the United States. The same is true of two people
anywhere at any time who can’t get out of bed because their backs are
screaming in agony. When we suffer, we are one. Pain is the great
equalizer.
We are a force, though, us people in pain. We are ready to be crazy and
try something new, because we will do anything not to hurt. And good
for us! The path to beauty may be paved with pain, but it is a path
available to you. There is only one person who could possibly stand in
your way.
