Today in class we are going to read a book called Freckleface Strawberry by Julianne Moore. This book is about being different and knowing that it is ok to be different than everyone around you. Today we are going to read Freckleface Strawberry different then other books we read; we are going to read it on the computer through a program called Powerpoint. After we read the story we are going to do a group activity about freckles and all of you will have the chance to make your very own freckles on your face. After everyone has made their freckles we are going to see how different everyone looks and make a graph on the computer.

Title Ultimate Goal: For you to acquire, apply, adapt, integrate, and evaluate knowledge as they construct new or expanded logical-mathematical concepts.

Intermediate Objective: You will learn how to organize objects, events, and information, by means of matching, classifying, sequencing, and patterning. This will be done through a class powerpoint with the help from the teacher.

Materials: -Face paint-Polaroid Camera -Large piece of poster board -http://www.dot2dot4fun.co.uk/people.html#

Procedure: *Copy each page in the book onto the computer and make a powerpoint of the story-read to the class*1.Divide into small groups of about three.2.Each student in the group can now paint on their face as many freckles as preferred. 3.You can pick the color of paint and paint them on yourselves. 4.Provide assistants for other members in you group while each child paints the freckles on their face. 5.Next the teacher will take a picture of you.6.Under your picture write freckleface (your name). 7.Sit at your table to count how many freckles appear on your face in the picture.8.After all students in your group have completed this task you are all going to organize the pictures on a poster board. The pictures can be categorized by number of freckles. 9.As a group you will now present to the rest of the class what your results on the poster board are. 10.Next the teacher with work with all students in the class to make an excel bar graph on the computer. 11.Finally as individual students you will explore the website below and complete and print your dot-to-dot picture to turn into the teacher.

• After the activity you as students should have gained a better understanding of what can be done with the use of technology. Aside from learning how to identify the plot in a story as well as discuss the story, you should have also learned how to create bar graphs in Excel and how to navigate the website game provided below:•http://www.dot2dot4fun.co.uk/people.html#

Conclusion

This lesson will allow students to gain a new respect for their differences. It will begin by reading the story through the Powerpoint program and continue on in discussion about the many different roles each child may play including a daughter, son, niece, nephew , etc. The students will then break into small groups and paint freckles on their face then compare and contrast within that small group. The students will then share their data and as a class a graph will be made with the aid of Excel. Finally a website dot-to-dot interactive site will be given to the children to complete.

Teacher Page This lesson plan is designed for children in the second grade but can easily be tailored to grades kindergarten through third grade. The lesson primarily focuses on reading and the secondary focus is math. An extension to this lesson is to make numerous graphs and observations about the freckles including size, color, shape, amount, etc. Prior to the lesson students will need to know basic computer skills such as controlling the mouse and basic buttons on a keyboard. Students should also have an understanding of differences between themselves and others. Basic motor skills including the pincher grasps would also be helpful for students to face paint on themselves.Evaluation

Math Standards: For children to acquire, apply, adapt, integrate, and evaluate knowledge as they construct new or expanded logical-mathematical.Math Standards: While learning mathematics, students will be actively engaged, using concrete materials andappropriate technologies such as calculators and computers.Technology Standards: The student will demonstrate knowledge of the nature and operation of technology systems. • Identify the computer as a machine that helps people at school, work, and play. Technology Standards: The student will practice responsible use of technology systems, information, and software. • Know the school’s rules for using computers. Intermediate Objective: Organize objects, events, and information, by means of matching, classifying, sequencing, and patterning.

• During the lesson plan be sure to ask numerous times if the students have any questions in regards to the task at hand. Be sure to explain that it is acceptable to make mistakes and refer to the teacher for help.• Provide assistance as needed throughout the lesson plan and be sure to observe each child’s behavior. • Also allow each child to complete the tasks on their own, if they are having problems with a certain task to not jump in to fix the problem, allow them to solve it on their own and then provide assistance.•To simplify the lesson plan instead of painting freckles on once face they can instead look into a mirror and count the number of freckles, moles, and/or birthmarks on their face.

•Instead asking the children to post their pictures on a poster board and share them with the class, they could simply skip this step and make the graph as a class.
