You’re Welcome Home (trad from O’Farrell’s 1806 collection) 2/4 reel

While Ireland hasan abundance of

polkas, there aren’tmany in Scotland.

There are, however, lots of tunes in 2/4

signature which have some of the same

qualities which I love in polkas: there is a beautiful

simplicity about them, they’re easy to learn,

and they’re fun!

Two tunes I learnt from the playing of Northumbrian

folk musician Alastair Anderson. The first tune was named for

a piper - Jamie Allan (1733-1810) - is known

in Scotland as The Reel of Tullochgorum. The

second tune is by another Northumbrian piper, Tom

Clough (1881-1964).

Roderick Dhu

A melody associated with Sir Walter Scott’s narrative poem The Lady of the Lake. One of its characters - Roderick Dhu, chief of Clan Alpin - is outlawed after a bloodthirsty murder. This setting was published in Captain Simon Fraser’s Airs and Melodies of the Highlands and Islands (1874).

2. You have stood on Malin Head and felt the great Atlantic swell, With the Orca swimming south, before the northern darkness fell. You have kissed Kintail’s Five Sisters, walking by the Spanteach Hill, Where your ancestors tread, now their voice is quiet and still. They will not wait, time and tide they will not wait, Takeamomentwiththeflowers, timeandtidetheywillnotwait.

3. The chill of the desert dawn and the hot rocks of Yellowstone, You’ve tramped the Southern Alps, where Hillary’s skills were honed. ThePacific’ssilversprayandSamarkand’sgoldendomes, You’ve seen wonders in this world, and felt the joy of coming home. They will not wait, time and tide they will not wait, Takeamomentwiththeflowers, timeandtidetheywillnotwait.

4. The seasons they seem shorter now and some old friends have gone, But their voices sometimes echo through life’s busy throng, Our lives are but a heartbeat in an endless song of fate, Takeamomentwiththeflowers, timeandtidetheywillnotwait.

They will not wait, time and tide they will not wait, Takeamomentwiththeflowers, timeandtidetheywillnotwait.

atrine’s LadyLoch Katrine’s Lady (Phil Cunningham) slow air

The title possibly refers to The Lady of the Lake, Sir Walter Scott’s popular narrative poem published in 1810. Set in the Trossachs, much of the action takes place on an island in the middle of Loch Katrine known as “Ellen’s Isle”.
