NIGHT OF MUSEUMS 18TH OF MAY

Permanent exhibitions, museum garden and the exhibition “Mustrid meenutavad” (“Patterns Will Remember”) are open for visitors. Guided tours of the museum at 18; 19; 20; 22.

SETOMAA MUSEUMS / VÄRSKA FARM MUSEUMPIKK 56, VÄRSKA BOROUGH. OPENING HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM NIGHT: 18–23.

The museum collects, preserves and presents material heritage mainly from the late 19th and early 20th century related to Seto farming traditions. Visitors can get a thorough overview of rural Seto culture from its diverse collection of farming tools and domestic items. The museum also features a rich display of handicraft of Seto women, their tools and materials. At the edge of the farm, there is Seto Tsäimaja (tea house), where visitors can get acquainted with the local cuisine.

KARULA NATIONAL PARK VISITOR CENTREÄHIJÄRVE. OPENING HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM NIGHT: 15–23.

Throughout the day, Karula National Park Visitor Centre and permanent cultural heritage exhibition in the barn are open for visitors.

At 18.00, folk costume maker Carmen Küngas will give a presentation about the folk costume patterns of Vana-Võromaa parishes, their meanings, hidden symbols and old customs. Participation is free, everyone is welcome to join!

At 15.00-18.00, Vanaema (Grandmother’s) Garden near Mäekonnu tower in Karula National Park is hosting a green market, where various plants and gardening tools are traded or given away. The gardener of Vanaema Garden Tiia Trolla gives a tour of the garden. Herbal plants are for sale.

SETOMAA MUSEUMS / SAATSE MUSEUMSAATSE. OPENING HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM NIGHT: 18–23.

In the Saatse Museum, visitors can get acquainted with Seto patterns. The meanings of symbols and the colours of red and white in the patterns are explained. Visitors can try their hand at making the patterns themselves on paper, using Seto folk costumes, icon scarves and other Seto textiles for inspiration. The programme takes place in the cozy building of Saatse Museum. Patterned bread is served.

STATE FOREST MANAGEMENT CENTRE’S PÄHNI VISITOR CENTREPÄHNI. OPENING HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM NIGHT: 18–23.

The Visitor Centre is displaying the exhibitions “Kagu-Eesti ristipuu” (“Tree Crosses in Southeastern Estonia”) and “Liblikad” (“Butterflies”). Visitors can play the recognition game “Metsamustrid” (“Forest Patterns”).

VANA-VÕROMAA MUSEUMKATARIINA ALLEE 11, VÕRU. OPENING HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM NIGHT: 18–23.

The permanent exhibition introduces the history of Võrumaa. The museum is also displaying the exhibition “Muuseumi mustrimaailm” (“World of Patterns in the Museum”) and paintings by Katrin Piile. Fun activities take place in the pattern workshop.

SETOMAA MUSEUMS / OBINITSA MUSEUMOBINITSA, MEREMÄE PARISH. OPENING HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM NIGHT: 18–23.

The cozy museum building in Obinitsa introduces the multifaceted culture and thinking of the Setos. A quick visit often turns into a cordial conversation at the tea table. Visitors can learn about past and present life in Setomaa, Seto songs and customs, handicraft and folk costumes.

MÕNISTE PEASANTRY MUSEUMKUUTSI, RÕUGE PARISH. OPENING HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM NIGHT: 10–21.

The Peasantry Museum is displaying farm textiles, farming tools, blacksmithing tools, 19th and 20th-century farm buildings and interiors. The museum is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the first Song Festival in 1869.

POKULANDURVASTE VILLAGE, ANTSLA PARISH. OPENING HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM NIGHT: 18–23.

Visitors can explore the architecturally distinctive Poku-house and then head to Padasoo Hill. The atmosphere of the old farm will be different for that evening; let it carry you away and you will get to see zigzagged, toe-patterned, a little bit striped, definitely woodborer-spiralled and perhaps even spotted land of Pokus. One thing is certain – this evening is going to be unique even for Pokuland.

Dress for outdoors and for sitting by a bonfire. Take along your favourite tea cup. There will be food, but bring a couple of euros of cash just in case.

ROGOSI MANOR LOCAL HISTORY MUSEUMRUUSMÄE, RÕUGE PARISH. OPENING HOURS FOR THE MUSEUM NIGHT: 18–23.

The exhibition in the bell tower of Rogosi Manor introduces the history of the manor and the lives of its lords; the museum basement is displaying an exposition on Soviet-era schools.
