Kaddish – The Mourner’s Prayer The Kaddish is a prayer that praises God

and expresses a yearning for the establishment of God's kingdom on earth.

It is recited at funerals and by mourners, and sons are required to say Kaddish for eleven months after the death of a parent.

The first mention of mourners saying Kaddish at the end of the service is in a thirteenth century halakhic writing (Jewish law).

Allen Ginsberg’s “Kaddish”

“Kaddish” is based on the traditional Hebrew prayer for the dead and tells the life story of Ginsberg's mother, Naomi.

The poet's complex feelings for his mother, colored by her struggle with mental illness, are at the heart of this long-lined poem.

Follow along while we listen to Ginsberg read from the poem. We only have parts of

the poem here, it is much longer when complete.

Listen/watch for lines that compare and contrast with the use of the Kaddish in Night and the traditional Jewish prayer
