Name TheoryAn Approach for Using Letters to Generate Music

a music composition system by Kevin F. Sanderson-Doughty

The graphic below outlines the system used to determine musical pitches in the Name Lullabies found at the following website: www.kerningwords.com/lullabies The numbers in the shaded row in the center of the graphic indicate the numbers on a telephone keypad. The columns of letters under each number are the letters associated with that number as they appear on an early 21st century telephone. Each of these columns is aligned with a white key on the music keyboard graphic. For those unfamiliar with a music keyboard, above each key is the pitch associated with that white key. For a Name Lullaby, the individual letters of a name are each assigned their own musical pitch, as determined by matching each letter to the pitch directly above that letter. For example, the name “Adam” results in the pitches “D E D A.” Other examples: “Caroline” results in “D D B A G F A E” and “Kevin” results in “G E C’ F A.” The series of pitches are then used as the beginning of the Name Lullaby’s melody. The chart below could also be used to generate a series of notes based on telephone numbers or any other sequence of numbers. Other uses or modifications (e.g. shifting the keyboard) are also possible.

When holding out the longer notes (especially in the first two lines),gradually fade off into nothingness.

Night Has Fallen

A slight elongating of the word "child" is recommended.

If the sun has not yet set, you can sing "Night is falling soon, my child"in the place of "Night has fallen now, my child."

Other recommendations:

Alternate words for when the sun has not yet set:

Time for sleeping, little one. Night is coming, day's soon done.Time to rest your little head. Time to make your way to bed.The sun will be back again, but we need to sleep till then.

- After singing through the lullaby, the melody can be sung again on "Ooo."- On the last time through, the final note can be changed to a C#.

54&Time for sleep ing,- lit tle- one. Night is here now, day is done.

&Time to rest your lit tle- head. Time to make your way to bed.

&The sun will be back a gain,- but you need to sleep till then.
