To all members of the school community:
It is hard to believe that we are almost to mid-terms! Fall is coming to an end and winter is quickly setting in. Along with that dreaded first snow, our winter season brings with it the start of our winter sports which are now up and running. As soccer, cross country, golf, baseball and all of our other fall sports draw to a close I would like to congratulate all of our teams on their very successful seasons.
I’d also like to congratulate everyone on the great “Spooktoberfest” that we had last week. Our staff and student council did an amazing job organizing this and it was great to see so many members of our school community participating and having a good time.
In November we will take time to remember those who gave their lives so that we can have many of the freedoms that we enjoy today. I have seen many staff and students proudly sporting their poppies and know that our teachers have been busy integrating this topic into their lessons. Our Remembrance Day ceremony will take place on Thursday, November 10.
November also brings with it mid-term reports and our first parent teacher sessions. I am hoping to meet many of our parents on those days so please make sure to introduce yourself if you are able to make it. The parent-teacher is scheduled for the evening on Thursday November 24, 6-8 p.m., and the afternoon on Friday, November 25, 1-3 p.m.
I wish all students the best of luck on their mid-term tests and assessments. I know you have all been working hard and are well prepared so don’t panic! Please know that we have lots of supports in place should you find yourselves feeling overwhelmed. Just see your teacher, an administrator or someone in guidance and we will do our best to help you out.
I hope that you all have a great month!
Matt O’Toole, Principal
Hey Nighthawks! What a month October was. We can’t believe it’s already November. We had a month jam packed of spooky events. Some of these included “Spooktoberfest” where we had a pep rally and activities afternoon. We’d like to thank everyone who worked to put that together and all the students who participated. We sure had fun! Some other events this month included bizarre fruit day, our awesome dance, a grad pumpkin carving and movie night, and the Circle K “Fuel Our School” fundraiser. The year is sure flying by and we’re having a blast. Stay tuned for November and the exciting events that are being planned. Some of these will include Movember, Respect Week, and Take Your Kid to Work Day for grade nines. We will also be having our Remembrance Day Service here at the school to show our respect and give thanks to both past and present veterans. Friday, November 11, is Remembrance Day and there will be no classes. We encourage you all to attend services at your local cenotaphs.

Oktoberfest Activities – Thursday, October 27
Squawk (Chyanne Bezanson) dances on stage with karaoke.
Air guitar!
Bubble soccer was enjoyed by players and onlookers alike!
Bungee run looked like a lot of fun
too!
Cotton candy was a huge hit!
Instrumental Music Program
The Instrumental Music Program is moving along
nicely. In addition to our Senior Band we now have three performing combos using the band room most lunch times and after school.
On October 3 the band attended a concert by the legendary singer/songwriter Alan Gerber. His show was incredibly engaging and entertaining.
The 2nd fundraiser of the year was the beverage sale
at the NRHS Halloween Dance on October 26. $310 was raised for our program. Shortly we will be announcing ticket sales on a raffle for a Gift Card Christmas Tree. The tree will be decorated with many gift cards which makes it a very valuable prize.
As well, we will be starting our traditional Los Primos
raffle with the grand prize being a trip to Cuba.
The first performance of the 2016/2017 season will be
at NRHS Remembrance Day ceremony on November
10. The first concert for the general public [featuring
all concert bands in the Pictou West part of the county]
will be held in the NRHS theatre on November 20 at 2
p.m. We look forward to playing this first concert
featuring works by Bach, Kevin Mixon and Hankus
Netsky. Proceeds from this concert will be donated to
the Veterans Wing in Pictou.
Congratulations Mr. Todd!
As we approach Remembrance Day in the coming week we would
like to recognize the 30 years of service for our own Mr. Colin
Todd. Previously Major Todd, and a member of the Nova Scotia
Highlanders, he became Lieutenant-Colonel Todd on October 22
and is now the Commanding Officer of the Nova Scotia
Highlanders. This is an extraordinarily large accomplishment. LCol
Todd joined the Highlanders as a private in 1986 and has been in
training at every opportunity; his experiences and successes are
vast [not the least were his deployments to Bosnia in 1999 and
again in 2000].
At the Change of Command Ceremony there was a huge parade
that included a full pipe band, a battalion of soldiers and a guest list
of dignitaries. Among the dignitaries were His Honour, Brigadier-
General the Honourable J.J. Grant, Lieutenant Governor of Nova
Scotia. Added to this was an impressive spectator turnout. It was
clearly an important and profound ceremony and at the centre of
the proceedings was LCol Colin Todd.
Congratulations on a remarkable career in the Military LCol Todd!
We are all so proud of you!
