where do we begin? i’ve been scratching my head over this one since early signs suggested the

Council elections in Brislington were going to produce a very weird result. Let’s start with the congratulations. The Nightingale would like to congratulate Harriet Bradley, Tony Carey, Jos Clark, and somehow, Mike Langley on being elected as Brislington’s councillors for the next four years.

Many of us are still in a state of befuddlement as to how this result came about. First, Jos Clark thoroughly deserved her commanding victory in Brislington West and I for one, am looking forward to working with her. However, voter confusion - voting for a single candidate instead of two, means that results got skewed. Not only that, but a good many voters went for the first name alphabetically for their party and not necessarily for the best candidate.

This resulted in the excellent Eileen Means losing out to Harriet Bradley, who seems nice, because B comes before M. Mike Wollacott lost out to the abysmal Mike Langley because L comes before W (I’ll be changing my name to Aaron Aaronson should I ever stand), and

Tony Carey, who only stood to help Perry Hicks with his campaign, won because C comes before H. Just in case you’re thinking Brislington has lost the plot, a similar pattern could be seen across most of the city. Bristol Council needs to be clearer about how voting works, voters need to know more about their councillors and council candidates, and perhaps the system needs reforming - either grouping candidates by party or having 70 single seat wards.

Lastly, I’d like to thank everyone who has phoned me, emailed me, or stopped me on the street for their amazing support for our last issue. Sticking your neck out at election time comes with its risks, a handful of complaints, but the overwhelming support for the last issue showed how it reflected, not directed, feelings in Brislington. We’ll give our newly elected councillors a chance, but let them know, if they thought I was hard on some of them this time, it’s nothing compared to next time if they fail Brislington.

Brislington Ladies Win the League!Picture this. Brislington Ladies sitting second in the league, six points behind Marine Academy Plymouth. They have four games to go and Plymouth have just the one. The maths is simple, win three and draw one, and Brislington take the league title. Throughout the season, Brislington had lost a single match - to Plymouth. Match by match, Brislington won hard-fought victories, closing the gap, seeing Plymouth win their final game, but that did not put Brislington off. In the end they won all four games, clinching the league by three points with a single loss all season. Sadly, they lost out on the double after losing 4-1 to Bishops Lydeard in the Pat Sowden Cup Final.

Notes from the Greater Brislington Neighbourhood Partnership ForumOn Monday April 25th, The Greater Brislington Neighbourhood Partnership hosted an open meeting where current traffic, parking, park access and other Brislington issues were discussed.

The 2016 Traffic SchemeAriaf Hussain began the meeting by explaining that Brislington is given a single traffic scheme to develop each year. The scheme can cost up to £15,000. Unfortunately, there are currently 70+ such schemes waiting to be actioned in Brislington. This year, the Partnership will consult residents of Wick Road and the Sands about the idea of putting double yellow lines outside Wicklea School to cut down on the traffic chaos, which sees the roads clogged, buses blocked, and people ignoring the one way system at the end of Salisbury Road.

disabled/Family Access to Our ParksPaul Hodge of Wick Road raised the issue of access to parks such as St. Anne’s Woods and Nightingale Valley for disabled people and parents with young children. Despite new and improved entrances, organised and paid for by Discover Brislington Brook/Brislington Community Partnership, disabled users require a key to open and lift a heavy gate in order to gain access. This is impractical and unfair, effectively blocking their access to our green spaces.

John Eccles suggested, with much approval from others at the meeting, for there to be no gates at all, and actual police patrols in St. Anne’s to stop kids biking in the parks. Perry Hicks then suggested an indoor sports complex and bike track based in Brislington, which could both give kids sporting opportunities, and provide employment for local residents.

Brislington’s GemsMarie Hodge made an impassioned plea for people in Brislington to help promote Brislington’s gems, after all the village was once the most beautiful in Somerset. Marie asked for more to be done to protect our heritage which includes possibly the world’s oldest pump house. Shall we develop a Brislington History Trail?

What is the Brislington & St Annes trefoil Guild? You may have noticed an item in the diary section of this magazine mentioning the “Trefoil Guild meeting”.

The What? Well, in short it’s “Guiding for Adults”. Every guild or group across the world is different except that we all share one aim: to keep the spirit of the Girlguiding & Scouting promise and law alive, and to have fun doing it. We also support Girlguiding in our community.

We don’t have any hard and fast rules about what we do, but we do try to do something different every month when we meet, whether it be an outing or visit, welcoming a speaker, trying new activities or just getting together to talk and share ideas with like minded friends. Recently, we organized a sponsored 10 stage walk around the Bristol Harbourside which raised money for the RNLI. Upcoming events include an alternative Olympic Games, an evening of cupcake decorating, and a member will share their experience of working with a donkey sanctuary.

For the Brislington & St Annes Trefoil Guild, our meetings normally take place monthly on a Thursday evening. We are linked with Girlguiding, but you don’t have to have been a member to join our Trefoil Guild.

We welcome everyone who wants to join us, whatever your gender, origins or beliefs, providing you are 18 or over, and want to share our aims and contribute to our fun. Our next meetings will be on Thursday June 2nd & July 7th at 7.30pm Call 0117 9174932 or 07769623869 for more details.

Brooklea Needs Your Support! When people say Brooklea Health Centre, the first thing that is mentioned is the poor parking facilities. Well, the leadership teams at Birchwood and Nightingale Valley Practices think about parking and patient care, too!

Brislington is growing with new homes popping up everywhere and there is an expected increase in patients of around 7000 people in the next 5 years to Brooklea. Both practices know we are not always able to provide an appointment when you want it and we do our best to help, but we thought it would be a good idea to let you know what we have been trying to do to improve services for you.

what’s been happening? For more than 5 years we have submitted bids to the various bodies (PCT/NHS England) for funding to purchase the land at Brooklea and develop a health centre to meet the needs of the community. Our last 2 bids were successful, but nothing has happened. We have submitted another bid this year to the Bristol Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) with a full business case as to why the people of Brislington deserve this and how without a new health centre the existing building will not be able to support the growing patient list sizes.

To put it bluntly, there are a fixed number of rooms in Brooklea and they are all full with clinical staff seeing patients. There are no more rooms for doctors and nurses or any of the other highly beneficial services we could offer patients. As we get busier with more people, the time it takes for you to get an appointment will increase. If we had more room we could put more services locally and get more clinical support staff to see patients reducing the time it takes to see a GP routinely.

Our joint mission is to deliver excellent patient care with access to hospital led services within the community which our current building cannot support but which our proposal would deliver upon now; and for the future for our community in line with the NHS 5 year plan.

Here are a few things we have requested funding for:

• A new 2/3 storey building at the front of the site and more parking to the rear.

• Improved facilities with better accessibility; especially for disabled, frail, and elderly patients.

• Space for hospital teams to work with GPs in the community reducing the need for patients to attend hospital.

• Providing a large room that we can offer the use to the local community in the form of social prescribing to support our elderly, vulnerable patients and to reduce the risk of hospital admission.

• Developing a community hub for the locality which would include providing facilities for the use of the community in the form of social prescribing to support our elderly, vulnerable patients.

If successful, we will consult with you to get the best services possible, but first, we need your support.

what can you do to help? The only way we can stand out is by getting our communities behind our submission. We need you to contact Bristol CCG and tell them why you think Birchwood & Nightingale Valley practices are the best place to receive care. Their email address is [email protected] or sign the petitions which will be in Brooklea and in locations across Brislington.

Look After Your Skin this Summer Now is the time to consider how you should look after your skin and those of any children you care for. Many people still think it is healthy to get a suntan but the change of skin colour you experience is actually your skin producing melanin to try and protect itself from the sun’s harmful rays.

Even if it’s cool or cloudy, it’s possible to burn in the middle of the day during the UK summer. It is also possible to burn at other times of the day and year.

There is no safe or healthy way to get a tan from sunlight. Getting a tan provides little protection against later exposure to sunlight and the resulting skin damage outweighs any later protective effect*.

what to do if you get sunburntYou should contact your GP, attend an NHS walk-in centre, or call NHS 111 for advice if you feel unwell or have any concerns about your sunburn, particularly if you are burnt over a large area or have any of the more severe symptoms listed below.

You should also see your GP if a young child or baby has sunburn, as their skin is particularly fragile.

Signs of severe sunburn can include: • blistering or swelling of the skin

• chills

• a high temperature (fever) of 38C (100.4F) or above, or 37.5C (99.5F) or above in children under five

• dizziness, headaches and feeling sick (symptoms of heat exhaustion)

Here are some sun safety tips: • Ensure you spend time in the shade from 11am to

3pm from March to October.

• Make sure you never burn

• Cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses.

• Remember to take extra care with children.

• Use at least SPF15 sunscreen.

Keep safe in the sun and if you want to be browner – fake it!

PUBLiCiSE YOUR COMMUNiTY GROUP TO BOOST NUMBERS 7

Many of you reading this magazine will know the Brislington Meadows. For those of you who do not know,

these fields extend from victory Park to the back of Broomhill Junior School, and between School Road and Bonville Road. This pocket of greenery is home to all manner of wildlife, two sets of allotments, and two sets of grazing horses.

However, the area is under constant threat of development. First it was 900 houses and most recently 300. Resident concerns about flooding, congestion, wildlife, infrastructure, school places, were all brushed aside, yet so far, nothing’s been agreed. However, the land is a mixture of council and constructor owned. The axe is still hanging over those who till the allotments or graze horses. This axe, could fall at any moment, and no one knows what is going to happen.

Sunny and KirstyIn May, I received a phone call from local resident, Tracey Bryant, who rents Pond Field from the council. She’d seen the magazine and wanted to let me know what the situation was. Simply put, with just 3 months notice, she could be evicted from the land and her horses made homeless.

Pond Field, as it’s called in the 1836 tithe map, gets its name from the way it floods. A steepish field, water runs off it whenever it rains, making the land boggy, and often leading to water pooling.

Tracey has two horses, both 17 years old and in their dotage, grazing the field. Both look good, still plump from their winter stores. Sunny, who is a magnificent black horse kept an eye on me and came over several times to see if I were friend or foe. He’s very protective of his sister and you can see why when you see her close up. Kirsty lost an eye several years ago when she snagged herself on a Chinese lantern.

Despite renting the field, Tracey has had little help from the council in securing it, nor in removing poisonous acorns from the field. Each autumn she has to block part of the field off while she removes them daily. The fences are temporary, everytime she puts up new ones, people come along and steal them. However, some good news comes from the residents of flats on Allison Road who keep an eye out for intruders.

The pressure of not knowing what will happen is telling for Tracey. No decision has been made either way and so long as the land remains just meadowland, rather than a nature reserve or park, it will continue to be under threat. Why spend money on new permanent fences when they could get nicked or taken over by the council?

The Park AllotmentsBefore meeting Sunny and Kirsty, Tracey took me to meet Mike and Olive Lynch, who were attending to their allotment. Mike, who now lives in Stockwood, grew up in Brislington and keeps a two-section patch. He told us that he too does not know what is happening, but that the Council want to turn Park Allotments into an entrance/exit road for the new development, adding to traffic on School Road and destroying all the allotments. All he’ll get is a 1 year notice of development and maybe £150 in compensation with no help in relocation. Naturally the threat to the land has forced some holders out, though there remains a long waiting list. If the land is not used, however, it will only give the Council more of an incentive to build on it.

More than horsesSunny and Kirsty are not the only animals under threat. Tracey does not know what she’ll do if she is evicted from the land. Both horses are 17, she cannot afford to move them. On the other side of Brislington Meadows, someone else rents fields for 17 show horses, but it’s not just about horses. The area is home to badgers, foxes, a kestrel, many birds, bats, at least one owl, and a family of rabbits who have recently taken up residency. On occasion you will also see cows who have wandered up from other fields. The meadows remain one of our wonderful natural areas, beloved by dog walkers, and those who want to escape the concrete jungle for a few moments, let’s preserve them.

The Nightingale contacted the new Bristol Mayor, Marvin Rees for his opinion on whether Brislington Meadows will be part of his 2,000 new homes a year pledge. So far he’s not replied to us, but that’s not surprising given it’s his first week in the job. We’ll keep asking and hopefully we’ll get an answer later on. In the meantime, there’s lots you can do to to help - gather information on animals, insects, plant, trees - spread the word, walk the fields, organise, and keep an eye out for consultations.

Brislington Meadows facing an uncertain future

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS wiTH THE COMMUNiTY 8

i first threw my hat in the ring when Mike Langley and Mike wollacott refused to help me with a problem in Brislington

East. They laughed at me when i said i would run for council and could do a better job. it has been a steep learning curve, tethered to a party that has not always helped, but in the three elections i’ve stood in, i’ve come close. i’ve swayed a lot of minds.

Do I think I fought hard enough in this campaign? Yes, I do. Was I ready for the job? Yes, I was more than ready to stand up and represent you. To promote the idea of a better Brislington.

Most of all I am grateful for all those who voted for me. Over a thousand of you came out and put an X by my name. I’m especially grateful who voted for me despite my party, who put the person ahead of party politics, and said I was the one Tory they’d vote for despite being committed Labour supporters. Choosing a party is a very personal thing, but sometimes you need to know who you are voting for and why, rather than blindly going the same way as always. You looked up and you gave me your blessing, and we almost did it.

“Everybody you fight is not always going to be your enemy

and everybody who helps you

is not always going to be your friend.”

During the campaign, Tony Carey and I thoroughly enjoyed promoting our brand of Conservatism. We’re not all born equal - we have different skills and aptitudes, but we should all have equal access to resources and opportunities with which to make something of our lives. We were also excited by the prospect of working with committed, hardworking local representatives like Eileen Means, who sadly did not get in, Jos Clark, and our green candidates.

That work can still go on. Eileen has reiterated her desire to work with residents of Hungerford Road and the greens want to help save our meadows. In the days since the results came in, I’ve renewed my desire to see two things happen in Brislington; the first is to help organise an annual St. George’s Day medieval fayre in Brislington, and the second is to develop the Brislington Community Sports Centre with indoor motocross, boxing club, gym, community café, skate boarding and a bmx circuit. Maybe this is what I was supposed to do all along.

Lastly, and not forgetting, I would like to congratulate the successful candidates on winning their seats on the council. The campaigning was tough, but really it was the easy part. Now the hard work begins and I am sure Tony, Jos, Harriet and Mike will do their best to promote Brislington.

Property prices in Brislington and St. Anne’s increased by 35% in the last two and half years, which is not only one of the highest increases in Bristol, but also the country as a whole. The question is, why are property prices rising so fast here? This month, we took some time out to speak to Greenwoods founder, John Parkinson.

“Brislington and St. Anne’s has so much to offer, with easy access into town, great ofsted ratings and increasingly ever improving shops. In my view, it easy to see why these areas are so up and coming and attracting the attention of more and more first time buyers, whom may of have never considered it before,” says John.

To elaborate on John’s points, it’s a combination of the excellent cycle routes (we know how much Bristolians love their bikes!) and great transport links, including the close proximity of the M32, with easy access to the city, the motorway and all points beyond.

“Not to mention the soon-to-be-live HS2 high-speed rail link to London that’s helping put the spotlight on Brislington and causing the centre of Bristol to move southwards.”

John Parkinson puts the area’s popularity down to its various attractions including its closeness to the city-centre, Paintworks, and Arnos Vale Cemetery. For John, all of this and more creates a wonderful place to live and socialise in.

“Sometimes property areas just get popular because of the level of attention they receive, with so much infrastructure being invested, such as the announcement for the new 12,000-seater music venue stadium to be built next to Temple Meads.”

So, what does the future hold for Brislington and St. Annes? We asked John for a final word on the matter.

‘’In my opinion, and I know I’m biased, Brislington and St. Anne’s will continue to become more and more popular, not only amongst house buyers but with people in the rented sector. Brislington is now firmly embedded on the map as a great place to live in Bristol and I can only see the area going from strength to strength in the up and coming years.’

Brislington property prices are going through the roof!

Bristol Council Election Results:

SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS wiTH THE COMMUNiTY 10

Your New Brislington West Counsellor: Jos Clarke (Liberal democrats)

First of all would like to thank the residents of Brislington West supporting and electing me..

As a local resident, I am keen to work with other residents to make the area a better one. There are a number of areas I feel need addressing including:

• The number 36 and airport bus services need to be improved locally.

• Hungerford Road’s surface and street appearance.

• Resolving the Scotland Lane problem to make it usable all year round.

• A new cycle way from Talbot Road to St.Philips Greenway.

• The development of housing on the John Peer factory site on the A4.

• Making sure the Arena development does not affect parking and traffic in Brislington.

• Supporting a new St. Anne’s train station development.

• Making the Sandy Park Road/Allison Road junction safer for children.

There are many other issues that will come to light and I will work hard to help resolve them as your Local Councillor.

Your New Brislington West Counsellor: Harriet Bradley (Labour)

“Hello, I am Harriet Bradley, your newly elected Labour councillor. I have been a teacher all my life (secondary, primary, adult, FE and HE) and now work at UWE researching young people’s lives. I am also a trade union activist. Very sadly, Councillor Eileen Means did not get re-elected. Those of you who met her know what a wonderful hard-working councillor she was. I want to carry on her work on local issues, such as keeping Wick Road library open, getting a bus service to Callington Road hospital and sorting out Brislington’s traffic and parking problems. The opening up of St Anne’s station to provide better public transport into the city is an important goal, along with more affordable housing. Brislington has great community spirit and I look forward to meeting residents and helping with your problems. Please contact me on [email protected] to discuss any issues. Councillor surgery Saturday May 21st 10-12 Wick Road Library.”

Re-elected Councillor for Brislington East: Mike Langley (Labour)

“Thanks for all the support from Brislington east voters in the face of the lies in the last issue.”

“Transport –housing – green spaces so much to do. We need to reform and strengthen neighbourhood partnerships so they are more effective for our local communities.”

“Public transport in parts of Briz is poorly served need to open St Annes station there so much to do. A word of thanks to the work of Mike W for his time as a councillor, mate and great help, I feel his loss as he was a comrade and fellow trade unionist.”

Returning Councillor for Brislington East: Tony Carey (Conservatives)

“Firstly I wish to commiserate with my running partner, the real idea was to get Perry elected and not necessarily me.

“Now that I am elected I promise to work hard alongside my elected partner for the benefit of Brislington East. As he mentions, transport in particular is a long-standing problem and he has already made in-roads into communicating with 1st Bus about the 36 route. The protection of Brislington’s green spaces, in particular the Brislington Meadows, will be high on our agenda.

“One thing we noticed during campaigning is that a lot of litter is in fact waste put out for recycling that’s been blown away overnight. I want to improve our recycling collections. I will also work with community volunteers to promote new concepts, e.g. St George’s Day celebrations, Brislington in Bloom and the provision of MUCH better recreational facilities.”

Brislington Wi Dinner ClUB revieW:

FlorenceThe wi dinner Club has been running for a few months so is now in full swing. May’s dinner was on a Friday evening at Florence in Totterdown.

The restaurant has a lively, if slightly chaotic, atmosphere and was full by 8.30pm. The outside seating area at the front gets the evening sun so is a lovely place to sit with your BYO drinks. The service was friendly and, like the atmosphere, a bit chaotic.

Once you’ve chosen what you want you go up to the till to order and pay; this was great for us as we were a group of 7 and it meant we didn’t have to worry about splitting the bill at the end of the evening.

Most of us had 14 inch pizzas (they do smaller sizes) and most of us ended up taking some home. The pizzas are tasty, very reasonably priced and certainly good value for money.

Florence is a friendly, informal neighbourhood restaurant and perfect for groups. It’s not been open long and is doing a roaring trade - in takeaway as well as sit-down. I know lots of locals who have become regulars already which is clearly a good sign.

Nik davey - Brislington Wi Dinner Club

Ingredients:

• 4–5 tablespoons Olive Oil

• 6 Spring Onions, sliced

• 2 Garlic Cloves, finely chopped

• 300g podded Broad Beans

• 200ml Vegetable or Chicken Stock

• Salt and freshly Ground Black Pepper

• a small bunch of fresh Chives, roughly chopped

• 8 slices French or Ciabatta Bread

• 1 teaspoon White Wine Vinegar

• 4 Eggs

• a little grated Black Truffle (optional)

This is rather like posh beans on toast, and makes the most of the lovely fresh broad beans which are just coming into season. This is a great brunch idea. See more at: www.thewi.org.uk/what-we-do/recipes/

Broad Bean Purée and Poached Egg on Toast

Serves: 4 Preparation time: 20 minutes Cooking time: 10-12 minutes

Method:

1 Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a frying pan, add the spring onions and fry for 2–3 minutes until just softened. Add the garlic, broad beans, stock and a generous sprinkling of seasoning.

2 Simmer for 5 minutes until the broad beans are just tender.

3 Mash the beans until you get a coarse puree or blitz in a food processor or liquidiser.

4 Stir in half the chives. Keep hot in a bowl.

5 Brush one side of each slice of bread with a little oil and toast in a ridged frying pan until golden. Brush the second side with a little more oil, turn over and toast until golden.

6 Meanwhile, bring a medium-sized saucepan of water to the boil. Add the vinegar and a little salt. Break an egg into a cup and then slide the egg into the gently simmering water. Repeat with the remaining eggs.

7 Cook for 3–4 minutes until the whites are set and the yolks still runny, or until done to your preference.

8 Spread the mashed beans over the hot toasts and divide between four serving plates. Drain the eggs well and add one to each plate. Sprinkle with a little extra seasoning, the remaining chives and a little finely grated truffle, if using.

9 Serve immediately.

Take a look atOasis Academy Brislington

Parent Tours for families of Y4 and Y5 children take place on Monday July 4 and Tuesday July 5, starting at 10am

A New Creative Arts Hub for Brislington?Oasis Academy Brislington is hoping to open up its arts facilities as a creative hub for the community. Principal Peter Knight is inviting local artists, performers and craftspeople the chance to become “artists in residence” at the secondary school.

“There are many creative people in the Brislington area,” he said. “We can offer them the use of our amazing facilities from 7am to 6pm in term time if they are willing to share some of their expertise with our students during our afternoon Period 6 enrichment sessions.”

Knight envisages painters, sculptors, poets, dancers or actors taking up the opportunity to use the art, design and technology, music or dance studios or performance space at the academy for free. In return, they would be asked to run workshops and demonstrations to inspire the students, who are aged 11 to 18.

It’s all part of a wider plan to increase cultural opportunities for students at Oasis Academy Brislington. The school is looking at setting up a community choir and is building up instrumental music and speech and drama classes, leading to formal qualifications.

Battlefields visitStudents from Oasis Academy Brislington were honoured to visit the World War One battlefields just weeks before the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. This year’s trip to France and Belgium involved 48 Year 9 students, who began by going to the Langemark German war cemetery and the Tyne Cot Commonwealth war graves cemetery. They also visited the Passchendaele Museum, which includes an interactive tour around mock trenches.

The group attended the nightly Last Post memorial service at the Menin Gate, where Libbie Phillips and Alister Edwards proudly laid a wreath on behalf of everyone at the academy. Next day, the students visited many of the monuments commemorating the 1916 Battle of the Somme, including the Lochnagar crater, Vimy Ridge, Thiepval and Newfoundland Park. Teacher Katie Reed said it was a privilege to be at the battlefields so close to the July 1 anniversary.
