COLAB : A CHANGE LAB FOR MARKHAM

COLAB is a proposed change lab from the Institute without Boundaries, class of 2012. For proposing communication strategy, we produced a book and hosted a book launch event on the day of publishing. The book was editted as a form design year book. It clearly explains the COLAB business model, branding strategy and case studies of the year through text, maps, architectural artworks and beautiful infographics.

In this project, I managed to design layout, infographics, and typesetting. The main challenge of this project is to visualize information using a more suitable method. There are many ways to show an urban planning project; either showing a map, or an architectural rendering; maybe even more graphic design-ish by applying Photoshop skills, or perhaps work in Illustrator to make infographic pictograms. Finding a perfect way depending on the needs and communication skills to showcase projects is what I have learned and masteminded in this book project.

COLAB LAUNCH

The COLAB launch is an event / exhibit hosted on the publishing day. The purpose of hosting this event is to propose COLAB in public, as well as to showcase our projects through a series of exhibit panels and plinths. We integrated this event into an inter-active sculptural art installation, by actually "launching" the book from the ceiling. Moreover, the one-hour press conference was as a form of Pecha Kucha – images show and tell.

In this project I worked on producing all the print, include setting up graphic and typography for banners, vinyl lettering, exhibit boards, booklet in lanyards and take-aways for guests. Our concept is to immerse the guests in the COLAB environment. To achieve that, we extract elements from the book by mas-sively using the logo and icons; and applying same color scheme throughout the space. The booklet in lanyard was designed as one of the take-aways to give summarized information to guests.

THIS IS WHERE YOU LIVE

At the 2012 Interior Design Show, the Institute without Boundaries team used the trade show floor to prototype our brand message, This Is Where You Live. Using the common language of the supermarket, including grocery products, large format sale signs and receipts all as mediums to communicate the idea that the line between urban and suburban is blurring.

In this project, my role is to set up branding strategy, design swag– tote bags and bottons, logo, icons and package labels, set up mock-up files, sourcing images and layout all the graphic elements and text. The ingrediant chart is one of the elements that we use to express what an ideal complete city should be. The other compelling element is the take-away receipt and a large poster format receipt, which lays out our messages in a form of transaction receipt. The five categories and all of the text are based on our five-month research of Markham.

I sketched out several ideas to put together different information cohesively. Once the decision was made, I started plugging away events according to the Excel spread sheets that my team made. The whole page is devided by three sections: local events on top are color coded by our categories, world events in the middle, and local population at the bottom. All three sections are lined up according to years. The layout lets people easily compare the three parts at once. When the readers pick up an event, they can move their sight up or down to find what else events that are relevant were also happening at the same time.

MARKHAM TIMELINE

Timeline is a method to research. At the early stage of under-standing Markham at the Institute without Boundaries, we research Markham through reference library, interviews and online resources. All the information we gathered was put in Excel spread sheets. This timeline is a project based on the research. It is laid out according to years, local events, world events and population.

(SUB)URBAN?

This is an interactive exhibit that we designed in this academic year. It is showcased at George Brown College School of Design. In this exhibit we speak to the audience through messages that sums up our research, and also create an interactive game board for people to engage in making the city complete. The exhibit has three sections: messages, game, and an elevated image timeline.

We started by sketching out ideas. The early stage of brain-storming ideas was very intense. Once the information was laid out, I started working on typography of the vinyl lettering and infographics. I printed out several actual size mock-ups and tile them. After comparing different versions, and adjusting tracking and leading, the file was ready to go. Through this project, I've got more experience in working with large scale typography, and working collaboratively to build an exhibit.

ROLLIYA

Rolliya is a brand series from Symbol Shoes and Leather Shop in Taiwan. I was offered to design logo and shoes package for the new series of foldable flats, as well as accessories such as zipper silder for leather purse.

The selling point of foldable shoes is that girls can carry them in their bags in order to switch high heals to flats when needed, so my concept of this project is very simple and straight forward – shoes in a bag. Using digital illustration skills to draw a purse and apply it on the box.

GALLERY: INFOGRPHICS

This section lays out a selection of the inforgraphics through out the year. My works varies from different types of information. I visualize data, numbers, and facts; I create pictograms to depict a piece of information in action; I also make icons and symbols when needed.

The two pieces of infographics are from the publication– COLAB: A Change Lab For Markham. The information shows demographic facts in Markham, from Census of Canada 2006.

These two pictograms depict how modular rain water collector and solar water boiler work. It's clear and it's very graphic. I create the two pictograms for a proposed infill housing project. Without any architectural background, I focused on both my 2D and 3D graphic skills to make this project more visually appealing by creating pictograms and icons.

GALLERY: ILLUSTRATION

This is a selection of prints through 2009 – 2011. I create works in digital illustration and photography. I make posters, postcards, graphic T-shirts, and CD covers. All of the artworks presented here are concept work. I create them for school assignments, competitions, or personal projects.

In 2009 I competed in a design competition hosted by Taiwan Association of Digital Media Design and mmexonline.cn, winning a nomination in the 2D Packaging Design category. My design for the cover was inspired by a song of a Japanese singer. The song gives the listener a gloomy yet gentle impression. My design de-picts the glamorous lyrics in a surrealistic way. It gives the stem an emotional personality as if it's a real human being.

This is a personal work inspired by the concept of Chinese seal cutting. I apply the element of Chinese seal charactor — Dazhuan on the word “imitate”, and create the texture which imitates the surface of a seal. This work was extended into a branding project later on in 2012.
