P—Programmed auto; camera automatically adjusts speed & aperture; different combinations can be selected by rotating Main Command Dial (flexible program); an *asterisk will appear next to exposure-mode indicator while in flexible program; to turn off flexible program, rotate Main Command Dial until asterisk is no longer displayed.

S—Shutter-priority auto; select shutter speeds from 30s to 1/4000; rotate Main Command Dial to choose shutter speed.

A—Aperture-priority auto; select aperture; for controlling depth-of-field; rotate Sub-Command Dial to choose aperture.

M—manual; both shutter speed and aperture can be chosen; rotate Main Command Dial to choose shutter speed, and Sub-Command Dial to set aperture.

Sceneo Rotate the Main Command Dial to choose a scene mode.o Mode options are Portrait, Landscape, Child, Sports, Close up, Night portrait,

Night landscape, Party/indoor, Beach/snow, Sunset, Dusk/dawn, Pet portrait, Candlelight, Blossom, Autumn colors, Food.

Effectso Rotate the Main Command Dial to choose a special effects mode.o Mode options are Night vision, Color sketch, Miniature effect, Selective color,

Silhouette, High key, Low key.

U1, U1—User-selected settings; make desired adjustments in P, S, A, or M modes, then save in Menu…Save User Settings…Save to U1 or U2…Save Settings.

o To reset, press Menu…Setup Menu…Reset User Settings…Reset U1 or U2…Reset.

Exposure MeteringDetermines how camera sets exposure in P, S, A, and M modes. Control by pressing metering button on top right of camera, and rotating Main Command Dial.

Matrix—Use for most situations; wide area of frame used. Center-weighted—entire frame used, but center area gets greatest weight. Spot—4mm circle centered on current focus point. Highlight-weighted—greatest weight is assigned to highlights. Example: performers on

stage in spotlight.

Picture Controls Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, Landscape, Flat Select in Photo Shooting Menu…Set Picture Control Available in P, S, A, and M modes. Custom picture controls may be saved.

Release ModesTo change modes, press mode dial lock release, and turn mode dial.

S—Single frame CL—Continuous low speed; 1-6fps; 100 shots max; will slow when buffer is full CH—Continuous high speed; 6.5fps; 100 shots max; will slow when buffer is full Q—Quiet shutter-release QC—Quiet continuous shutter-release [clock graphic]—-timer MUP--Mirror up; press shutter-release button once to raise mirror; press again to take

photo; used for low light and tripod.

Focus ModesDetermines how focus area is selected in autofocus mode. Controlled by focus-mode selector on front of camera.

M—Manual; only use with lenses that do not support autofocus. AF—Autofocus. Change type by pressing the AF-mode button and rotating Main

Command Dial.o AF-A—Auto-servo auto-focus; camera selects single or continuous, depending on

if subject is stationary or moving.o AF-S—Single-servo auto-focus; for stationary subjects. Focuses and locks when

shutter-release button is pressed halfway.o AF-C—Continuous-servo auto-focus; for moving subjects. Focuses continuously

while shutter-release button is pressed halfway.AF might not perform well in little or no contrast, through fences or grids, high contrast, geometric patterns, many fine details.

Auto-Focus Area ModesControlled by pressing AF-mode button and rotating Sub-Command Dial.

Single-point AF—for stationary subject; focus is on subject in selected focus point only; this is automatically selected when manual focus is used.

Dynamic-area AFo 9-point—when plenty of time to compose photo, or predictable movement.o 21-point—subject moving unpredictably.o 51-point—subject moving quickly.

3D-tracking—subject moving erratically side to side. Group-area AF—focuses using a group of focus points selected by user; for subjects

where single focus point is difficult. Auto-area AF—subject automatically detected; face detection is given priority.

Focus Point Selection1. Unlock focus selector lock (on back of camera, upper right of screen);2. Use focus selector toggle to select focus point in viewfinder;3. Press OK to select;4. Lock the focus selector.

AE-L/AF-L buttonWorks in AF-A and AF-C focus modes (In AF-S focus mode, focus locks automatically and remains locked until finger is removed from shutter-release).

Rotates thru Auto, Incandescent, Fluorescent, Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, Shade, Choose color, and Preset.

Works in P, S, A, and M modes only. White balance bracketing can be set in Custom Setting e6 Auto bracketing set.

Depth-of-Field PreviewTo preview, press/hold depth-of-field preview button.

Exposure CompensationPress +/- button by shutter-release and rotate Main Command Dial.

Works in P, S, A, M, and Scene modes only; adjusts from -5EV to +5EV; affects both flash level and exposure when flash is used.

Not reset when camera is turned off.

Bracketing1. Select type of bracketing (flash or exposure) in Menu…Custom Setting...e6 Auto

Bracketing Set2. Choose between AE & Flash, AE only, Flash only, WB bracketing, ADL bracketing.3. Press “BKT” button and rotate Main Command Dial to choose number of shots in

bracketing sequence.4. Press “BKT” button and rotate sub-command dial to choose exposure increment.5. Frame photo, focus, and shoot. Shutter release button must be pressed once for each bracket if in Single Frame mode. To cancel bracketing, press “BKT” button and rotate Main Command Dial until BKT

icon disappears.

Active D-LightingPreserves details in highlights and shadows in one shot; use for high contrast scenes. Most effective with matrix metering.

Active D-Lighting adjusts exposure before shooting; D-Lighting is for retouching via menu after shooting.

Turn on in Menu, Active D-Lighting selection.

High Dynamic Range (HDR)Preserves details in highlights and shadows by combining two shots. Most effective with matrix metering.

1. Menu…Photo Shooting Menu…HDR;2. Select a mode (On/series or On/single photo);3. Choose the HDR strength (auto; extra high; high; normal; low);4. Compose photo, focus, and shoot.

Built-in Flash Press flash pop-up button. Press the “(lightning bolt)” button and rotate Main Command Dial to select flash mode.

Works with P, S, A, and M modes only. Pressing shutter release halfway will check exposure. Built-in flash angle can cover field of view of a 24mm lens, and has a minimum distance

of 2 feet.

Manual Flash Sync Modes Fill flash Red-eye reduction—pre-flashes for one second. Red-eye reduction with slow sync—shutter speed slows.

Slow sync—captures both subject and background at night or in dim light; may need tripod.

Slow rear-curtain sync Rear curtain sync—flash fires just before shutter closes; creates effect of stream of light

behind moving objects; may need tripod. Off—flash does not fire.

Flash Compensation Works in P, S, A, M, and Scene modes only. Press the “(lightning bolt +/-)” button and rotate Sub-Command Dial. Adjust from -3EV to +1EV in 1/3EV increments. Not reset when camera is turned off. To reset, turn compensation to show zero. Will also adjust certain Nikon flash units such as SB-600.

Self-Timer ModePress shooting mode dial lock release and rotate shooting mode dial to select self-timer mode.

Recommended to insert DK-5 eyepiece cap to prevent light from entering via viewfinder and interfering with exposure.

Two seconds before photo is taken, lamp will stop blinking and beeping will become more rapid.

Multiple Exposure1. Menu…Photo Shooting Menu…Multiple Exposure.2. Select a mode (series or single photo).3. Choose number of shots.4. Choose amount of gain (on or off)

o AutoGain On (default) will decrease exposure according to number of exposures recorded.

5. Frame photo, focus, and shoot.6. Take the selected number of photos. Multiple Exposure icon will blink until correct shooting ends. Canceled if camera is turned off.

Interval Timer Photos1. Menu…Photo Shooting Menu…Interval Timer Shooting.2. Choose start option (now, or specific date/time).3. Choose interval between shots.4. Choose number of shots per interval.5. Start shooting. Shooting can be paused by pressing “ok” button; or turning off camera. Tripod use is recommended. DK-5 eyepiece cap is recommended.

Live View Live view selector is for either photos or movies.

o Movie button does not work when photo live view is in use. Press LV button to enter or exit Live View mode.

Live View, Photography

Available AutoFocus-area modes: Face-priority, Wide-area, Normal-area, Subject-tracking.

o To change AF-area mode, press AF-mode button and rotate Sub-Command Dial.

i button allows access to select options:o Choose image area; Image Quality; Image Size; Set Picture Control; Active D-

Lighting; Remote Control Mode; Monitor Brightness; Exposure Preview.

Live View, Movies Press movie-record button by shutter-release to start recording. Press again to stop. Stereo microphones are on front of camera; small holes on either side of flash head. If shutter-release is pressed during movie recording, movie will end, a photo will be

taken, and view returned to Live View Movie.

i button allows access to select options:o Choose image area; Frame Size/Frame Rate; Movie Quality; Microphone

Sensitivity; Frequency Response; Wind Noise Reduction; Set Picture Control; Destination; Monitor Brightness; Multi-Selector Power Aperture; Highlight Display; Headphone Volume.

Maximum movie length is 4GB.

Fn Function ButtonRole played by the Fn button (front of camera, right next to lens on lower half) can be assigned by Menu…Custom Settings…f2 Assign Fn Button.

Wi-FiConnects to smart device running Wireless Mobile Utility app.A Wi-Fi icon will appear on camera control panel when Wi-Fi is enabled.Connecting SSID (Android and iOS)

1. On camera, enable Wi-Fi on camera. Menu…Setup Menu…Wi-Fi…Enable.2. On camera, display camera SSID. In same menu, select Network Settings…View SSID.3. On smart device, select the camera SSID.4. Launch the Wireless Mobile Utility.

To end connection, do any of these: Turn camera off. Menu…Setup Menu…Wi-Fi…Network Connection…Disable. Start recording a movie.

Two-Button ResetBy holding “ISO” and “+/-“ buttons (marked by a green dot) down for more than 2 seconds, these camera settings can be restored to default values:

Playback Left/Right arrows move through photos.

o Rotating Main Command Dial also moves through photos, but at current zoom level.

Up/Down arrows cycles through show additional info screens. Pressing i button during playback activates menu to choose playback slot and folder.

Memory Cards Must be formatted by the camera before first use. Format from menu, or by

simultaneously holding the two red “FORMAT” buttons until FOR appears, then press the two buttons again.

FAT32 is supported for cards over 2GB. Manual contains a table of tested, approved CF cards from SanDisk and Lexar. Class 10 cards are recommended for faster transfer times.

SD memory cards have a write protect switch on them. When in “lock” position, card cannot be formatted and photos cannot be deleted or recorded.

When two cards are inserted, display shows available space for Slot 1. Use of second card can be selected in shooting menu. Slot 2 can be used as Overflow,

Backup, or Raw Slot 1/JPEG Slot 2. Turn power off before inserting or removing memory cards. Memory card access lamp (between Multi Selector and Live View Selector) lights when

memory card is being accessed. Do not turn power off while data is being recorded, deleted, or copied to memory card or

computer. -E- display means no memory card is inserted.

Camera battery Use EN-EL15 batteries only. To reduce battery drain, a Standby Timer turns off some display items if no operations

are performed for six seconds.

Charging battery Charger light will slowly flash as battery charges; stops flashing when fully charged. It takes about 2.5 hours for an exhausted battery to fully charge. Viewfinder and Control panel battery icons blink when battery is exhausted; shutter-

release is disabled.

Clock battery Clock and calendar are powered by an independent rechargeable power source. Two

days of charging via main batteries will power the clock for about 3 months. If “CLOCK” icon flashes in control panel, clock battery is exhausted, and clock needs to

be reset to correct date and time. Camera clock is not as accurate as watches. Check clock periodically, and reset time as

necessary.

Cleaning Sensor Using Low-Pass FilterCleaning is performed by vibrating the low-pass filter.

1. Set camera down on its base.2. Menu…Setup Menu…Clean Image Sensor.3. Select Clean Now.

Lenses CPU lenses are recommended. CPU lenses can be identified by CPU contacts by the mount. Type G and D have a “G” or “D” on the lens barrel. Polarizing filters: C-PL circular polarizing filter must be used; linear polarizing filters

cannot. Use FX lenses for full area of sensor (36mm x 24mm). DX lenses only cover 24mm x16mm area of sensor.

o Select Auto DX Crop on or off in menu settings.Attaching lens

1. Keep mounting index on lens aligned with mounting index on camera.

2. Rotate lens counter-clockwise until it clicks.Detaching lens

1. Turn camera off.2. Press and hold the lens-release button while turning lens clockwise.

Error Messages/Displays fEE blinking: Lens aperture ring is not locked at minimum aperture. Battery icon blinking: battery is completely exhausted. Blinking solid black triangles: camera unable to focus using autofocus; use manual. -E-: No memory card. Full: insufficient memory to record further photos. CArd Err: Possibly damaged card; cannot access memory card. CArd--- flashing: Memory card is locked/write protected. For: Memory card has not been formatted by camera. Err: camera malfunction. Try to release the shutter. May need servicing. F--: No lens attached, or non-cpu lens attached. CLOCK icon flashing: C lock battery is exhausted, and clock needs to be reset to correct

date and time.
