Industrial Symbiosis

Industrial Symbiosis (IS) can be defined as :

An innovative approach which brings together

companies from all business sectors

aiming at

improving cross industry resource efficiency

through the commercial trading of

materials, energy and water

and the sharing of

assets, logistics and expertise

5

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/000300

Produce a Web Based PLATFORM

for Industrial Symbiosis Communities,

Offering Automation Supporting the SMEs,

Considering Regional Priorities and

Enabling public administrators

(municipalities, regional offices)

to implement their environmental policy and

to monitor environmental and

economic consequences

Main Objective

6

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/000300

Project Objectives

Consolidate practices and valuable knowledge

base (UK experience) in a form (service)

running on an autonomous basis

Build features to support innovative policy

approaches, facilitating the IS

implementation as an environmental policy at

a local-regional-national level

Formulate a knowledge-based approach with a

potential to report measurable social,

environmental and economic benefits

7

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/000300

Further Project Objectives

Prepare and train industries to embark on IS and utilize the

service

Deploy the widest possible application of scientifically

verified technologies for IS upgrade

Provide means to disseminate IS in the region of Viotia, but

also in other regions in Greece and Europe

Improve and increase the participation of Small and

Medium business enterprises (SMEs) into IS market–

oriented activities

Reduce the natural resources consumption (raw material,

energy, utilities)

Establish Industrial Symbiosis networks, recruit champions

to disseminate IS in Greece, Balkans and all regions

deprived of government support for IS

2150/2002/EC: Waste Statistics Regulation

Joint Ministerial Decision 50910/2727/2003 (Official

Gazette, B 1909/2003), (OJG 1909/2003): Solid Waste

Management in compliance with European Waste

Framework Directive 91/156/EEC

Benefits & Results

The project work focused to :

Generate the interest for the new paradigm with the

introduction of advanced technologies and promote its use.

The delivery of an Industrial Symbiosis platform with

innovative features.

Produce an automated web facility to enable effective

matching for industry in Industrial Symbiotic actions.

Create new champions Industrial Symbiosis and advance it

using media, social media practices, creation of forums,

conferences and focused Industrial and technology

dissemination actions.

Produce a solution based on the industry characteristics of

Viotia to reduce the consumption of natural resources.

reduce volume of waste streams disposed to landfill.

10

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/000300

The eSymbiosis innovative environmental practice will contribute

to:

Trade waste as feedstock among companies, build

environmentally integrated and efficient communities

Cost savings in raw materials and discharge fees

Waste reduction across a wide range of industrial activities

The development and assessment of environmental policies at

local and regional level.

Implementing the e-Symbiosis

Technology Advantage eSymbiosis employs Artificial

Intelligence Knowledge modelling to support the synapsis of Successful Industrial Partnerships

Ontologies classify all relevant information to Industrial Symbiosis, eg. Materials, Technologies, Production Workflows, Geographical Information.

Registration and Matching are supported by sophisticated algorithms.

14

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/000300

IS Portal

Technology Advantage

eSymbiosis supports partnerships, producing suggestions for matching, exploiting ‘technology knowledge’ and Best Practices for Industrial Symbiosis from global experience.

Industrial Symbiosis experts are actively participating and supporting portal members engaging in IS Business Transactions.

Partnership Results and Success Stories are integrated in the eSymbiosis Knowledge Base.

The Industrial Symbiosis (IS) Portal

With functions such as member communications, presence, information, forums, and expert blogs for consulting members and visitors on Industrial Symbiosis.

The IS Portal is live.

Applications of Knowledge Models

Scenario of Potential use of Pyrolysis Question in Hand:

What is the potential to set up a Pyrolysis Unit in Viotia?

Process Inputs: plastics, biomass, MSW, etc. Process Outputs: oil, biogas, biochar/coal What is the local market for:

Coal? Gas? Fuel oil?

28

LIFE+ Environmental Policy & Governance project: LIFE09 ENV/GR/000300

Use of technology units Search indicates

206 types of industries that use coal and could possibly replace it with charcoal

196 processes that use natural gas, biogas or LPG and could possibly replace it with pyrolysis gas

45 processes that use fuel oil and could possibly replace it with bio-oil

51 processes that use heavy oil, petrol or gasoline and could possibly replace it with bio-oil

Input/output models provide indicative flows, however, opportunities depend on specific capacities, locations and specific demands!
