Modern Forms of Communication and the Church..

Whilst the "A Nilai Ra Dovot" was a publication which ceased to exist after the independence of Papua New Guinea, many of those who read the paper and saw the communications value that it brought to the church "cry" for it's re-emergence. The "A Nilai Ra Dovot" was published in "Kuanua" and towards the end the use of Tok Pisin became more prevalent. I remember the delight and serious study made at the arrival of the "A Nilai Ra Dovot" at our home in the 1960's. It was a form of communications that was valued and passed from hand to hand in serious study. The folks who could not read had it read to them.

In this version of the "A Nilai Ra Dovot", I cannot ever hope to replicate the "A Nilai Ra Dovot" that was the Methodist icon of the past. I am simply publishing this with a view to at least spread the message of the United Church as it is now, in a simple and economical format. I hope that readers will help me sustain this new paper by sending in articles of interest especially those of a christian nature.

In addition, I want to publish relevant church history that will help to educate and inform todays population, especially the young generation.

I will publish eight pages of news, and will also make available an online version for internet enabled readers.

I am grateful to the mini syod of the United Church at Watnabara for approving this project in July 2017. With the assistnce of the church and with Gods grace, I hope to bring back some of that interest that is often lacking in the modern church today.

Mikael Barqagun - Methodist MatyrMikael Bilak, A Nilai ra Dovot, Vol XX April 1971,

Michael Baragun was a church member from Alagasam in the Malasaet Division, the first Baining from West Baining in New Britain to be a member of the Methodist Church. In the year 1941 he was baptised at Alagasam to be a full ‘Ekelesia’. Elon ToVoivoi was the pastor and he was the one who had brought him up to the full position of ‘Ekelesia tuna’ and Rev. Misiel Tiriman was the missionary who baptised him in the position.

He was a devoted church man and during the the fighting (WW2) he led his own people in worship and prayers, thus his life during the war strengthened his life and his belief in Jesus Christ.

In 1943 they arrested his pastor and his wife and so they were without a pastor up until the end of the war in August 1945. He then asked again for a Missionary to be allocated to them at Alagasam. I started working as a Minister in the Baining division in 1952. Rev Lutton and I used to visit them and we liked and admired his worship and his leadership of the church and worshippers in his village.

In 1955, one man, a false prophet named ToVul appeared. He chose a second person, Ganingga to be his number two and said of Ganingga that he would be later killed so that his death would save and free them from all troubles and bad things like Jesus and he, ToVul was God and he was the supreme leader of the people of Alagasam. He told them to stop working in the gardens, and throw away their money, axes and bush knives because new tools would soon arrive. He told his people to kill pigs, harvest taro and feast every day. He performed some acts for them so that they would believe him; he poured out medicine from a big bottle at the hospital and then prayed that flame would flare up inside the bottle, he also prayed that fire would come down from the heavens and fire did come down. I saw the lemon tree that the fire came down onto and the tree was singed. He also burnt a house and entered and was not burnt. These three acts increased the belief in ToVul. Mikael Bargaun, however, recognised that this man was a false prophet and he did not believe him and his no. 2, Saingbam.

ToVul taught the people to be clean every day and taught them how to sing so that they would sing and be happy and run around their houses. He selected a different group of people to cook food. ToVul saw that Mikael Baragun did not believe in him and he said to him; “You do not believe in me, you always believe in the talk of the missionary, you must see by now that every one of believes in me. You are the only one that do not believe me. You too must believe me.”

Mikael Baragun replied and said; “I will not believe in you. I know you that you are a false prophet as the bible says, some people will perform big signs like you have done so they will lead many people astray as you have done. I will never believe in you, I believe in Jesus.

ToVul said; “If you do not believe in me, after two days I will kill you.” Michael Baragun replied; “ That is fine, I am not afraid of death and I will not run from you, I will wait for what you have planned for me. After two days, Baragun knew that ToVul’s words would come true. He washed himself and dressed in his church clothes and waited praying in his house until ToVul came to get him. He stood infront of ToVul and the people and ToVul asked him; “Do you still doubt me?”.

He asked him the same question many times however, Mikael Baragun did not reply. He stood in front of ToVul like Jesus stood infant of Ponticus Pilate until he could not ask any more. Then ToVul asked Baragun’s oldest son to hit him on the knees so that his legs would fold and he would fall. His son hit him however, Baragun did not move or fall down. ToVul asked the people to hit him however he did not fall. He stood firm in Jesus. To Vul saw that Baragun was weak and did not run so he got an axe and killed him with it. He rolled Baragun on the ground and took a bite out of his hand and drank his blood and cut his body into pieces and they threw the pieces on to a rubbish heap.

Then they killed his pig and dog and threw the animals on top of his body pieces. They took his wallet and pass book and ripped up the passbook and took his possessions from his house and threw them on top of him. Then they burnt his house down.

ToVul then, looked for the missionary and his family so that he would kill them too but they were not there so he came to the servant Saingbam and said; “You are one of those that do not believe in me, today I will kill you too”. Saingbam stood and raised his hand into the front and ToVui cut his back, and his insides came out at opening of the wound. He threw the axe again and cut his face and his brains came out. He saw that Saingbam did not fall but stood firmly so he threw the axe at Saingbam’s neck except the axe fell and landed on Saingbams arms. Saingbam dropped the axe and he turned around and faced ToVui and said; “Get the axe and cut me with it, I am not dead yet.”

ToVul saw that this man was in a bad way but he did not fall to the ground and was not afraid and so ran away and asked the people to run away with him to the jungle. Saingbam picked up the axe and walked a long way and arrived at Galivit in the night. He asked the luluai to help him get to the hospital at Raunsepna, except that the luluai refused him.

Saingbam continued until he got to Mainam where asked the luluai to assist him to get to a hospital. The Luluai agreed and sent for the Doctor Boi, Noel ToVoivoi. Noel hurried to help and took him to the hospital where he was able to treat him. The Luluai from Mainam and the Luluai from Kumgi agreed to make a makeshift stretcher to carry him in the night until they arrived at Kumgi at daybreak. the Luluai from Kumgi asked his people to replace the men who carried Saingbam in the night. They carried him all the way to the beach at Vunamarita where they asked a white man for his boat. They took him too Boava where he was transferred to a truck that transported him to the Rabaul Hospital which was near the Police Baracks. He was able to tell the story to the administration.

When I heard that my Namesake was killed, I cried and arose in the night at my house at Gaulim school. With two Baining men from Malasaet, who had brought me the news, we went to the Kiap at Gaulim who was in the peoples village. He was resident there doing government work for the month. We told him and he said that he would send his car in a hurry in the morning to notify the Government in Rabaul. I also rose early at down to ride my bicycle to Malaguna to tell Rev Lutton who was the Chairman in that year.

This is the true story of Mikael Baragun and his true belief in Jesus until he died. He was not afraid of death. Saingbam also was true in his faith in Jesus and he was saved so that he would tell the story and in 1956 he was still alive at Alakasam. Today, I do not know whether he has died or not.There are some good things from this story.1. The steadfast faith of Mikael Baragun in Jesus.2. Mikael Baragun recognised ToVul as a false prophet.3. Mikael Baragun followed Jesus when Jesus stood in front of Pilate; when he stood in from of ToVul’s eyes until ToVul killed him.4. Saingbam too suffered for his faith.5. The Lord saved Saingbam so he would take the news about their fate to others.

What can we do at these times? We just need to believe like Mikael Baragun.

The house of worship at the place of MOLOT.by Moses ToBalil, Ulu.

The preparations for this church began in 1950. Those that were leaders in the circuit of Ulu thought about the servants of the Lord that perished in the time of the fighting; Rev Benjamin Talai and the missionaries; and the people in the circuit of Ulu thought that they will collect a little money for a piece of stone to be erected to honour them[1]. This idea was announced at the ministers meeting and the meeting agreed because it was not known where their graves werethe the stone of remembrance would be placed at the big cemetery at Molot, where some white people and foreigners from Fiji and Samoa and Tonga and some other people are are buried[2]. When some other circuits heard about this, they were happy about it, and they agreed that they would also stand up and help, with some money for the stone.

Then the agreement was changed and a new church would be built instead, because they thought about the money that was lost for the Molot people when their church was destroyed during the war. And so it was that the church would be called a ‘Pal na Im’ [3], a monument to the servants of the Lord who died during the fighting [4], and also to those that first brought the church to our land. [5]. And they they died in our midst. Let us say thank you and thank you again for their great love for us the people of here. That was also the reason why some of you other circuits , you helped with some money for this building. Therefore this house is a memorial about them, that died whilst working for the Lord.

This church is a very good house and a truly magnificent house. Many of you from the other circuits may have heard the story about it but you have not been able to see it. Its length is twenty fathoms and its width is four fathoms. There are four houses in this house, one is the main house which is the church, and part of it is fenced off for the sacraments. And another part is the second storey on top of the big house. The third is the tower which is right on top and starts on top of the second house. Its height is 38 feet. And the fourth house is the preachers house which is on the right hand side of the church.

About building the house, plenty of people worked on this building. Reverend Robinson started this work, then Eliaser Tiamuruka then two men from Papua[6]. Later two men from Molot completed the work on it. Thank you, we praise them for their work in helping us. God will bless these fine gentlemen.****

Reverend Benjamin Talai, a native Minister, his son, William Taupa; isak Ravian, Eron Temaren, Meli Kukuraina, Romulus Aria, Iosepat ToWamilat, Danial ToRiga, Esau ToWaira and Kilion Tamdip.

2. The Molot grave includes some of the settlers who came to Port Breton on the failed Maquis de Ray’s settlement. Rev George Brown had rescued these people and some of them were buried here when their sickness overtook them. Rev George Brown’s daughter Mabel Wallis and son Wallis are buried here also. Wallis was the first European boy to be born in these islands and was also the first European boy to die here.
