NINE PEGASUS SLOTS SOLDBY FRIDAY DEADLINE
By Bill Finley The deadline for owners to commit to buying slots in the Jan.27 GI Pegasus World Cup came and went Friday with only nineslots being sold. However, in hopes of having a full field of 12 bypost time, the Stronach Group bought the three remaining spotsand will look to find horses to fill them between now and entrytime for the $16-million race. The nine horses that have secured spots are: Gun Runner(Candy Ride {Arg}), West Coast (Flatter), Toast of New York(Thewayyouare), Gunnevera (Dialed In), War Story (NorthernAfleet), Collected (City Zip), Stellar Wind (Curlin) and Seekingthe Soul (Perfect Soul). The ninth spot was purchased earlier byFrank Stronach=s Adena Springs Farm, which has yet todetermine what horse it will use to fill the slot. The biggest omission from the list was that of GI Breeders= CupDistaff winner Forever Unbridled (Unbridled=s Song), who isowned by Charles Fipke. Fipke had said he was interested inrunning his mare in the race, but instead bought a slot forSeeking the Soul. Seeking the Soul is coming off a win in the GI Clark H. Dallas Stewart trains both horses. AThis was pretty much Mr. Fipke=s decision,@ Stewart said.AWe=re running Seeking the Soul because we think we have areally live chance with him. Forever Unbridled has alreadyestablished her resume. She=s a made woman. I know GunRunner is the horse to beat, but our horse is coming off a big winand we really think he has a good shot.@ Cont. p3
TAYLOR: RAISING HORSES AN ORGANIC PROCESS by Sue Finley
Taylor Made Sales= Mark Taylor saw a huge reaction to histweet on Wednesday that read, ADo you remember when thewhole world decided all American horses must be saturatedwith steroids? Just got a 100% clean report from@keenelandsales for the 3rd year. Haven=t seen a positive yet!@ The tweet was accompanied by a photo of a letter fromKeeneland=s Director of Sales Operations Geoffrey Russellstating that the results of the British Horseracing Authority=spost-sale drug testing had all come back negative for anysubstances prohibited by the BHA. The post-sale testing option for buyers was put in place in2015 after the BHA announced that all horses imported intoBritain would be required to be accompanied by a negativeanabolic steroid sample, and that any horse found to havereceived anabolic steroids would be banned from racing for 14 months. Pegasus World Cup cont. from p1 Stewart said Forever Unbridled is doing Agreat@ and will be
pointed for a AGrade I campaign.@ He mentioned the GI Apple
Blossom at Oaklawn as one race that would possibly be on her
schedule.
The Stronach Group had hoped to have all 12 slots sold by
Friday, but the company=s CEO Tim Ritvo said he was delighted
with the quality of the horses that have committed to the race.
The race will include the top four finishers from the GI Breeders=
Cup Classic, plus Gunnevera, who was sixth.
AYes, we wish we had all 12 slots sold by now, but those things
happen,@ Ritvo said. ABut we are thrilled with what we have. It=s
our second year and there are still growing pains. But I think
Frank Stronach deserves so much credit for what he has done
with this race. After last year, we could have said, we did it, that
was fun, goodbye. Instead, we=re back and look at the results.
This race has extended the racing careers of at least two horses,
Gun Runner and Stellar Wind, and that never would have
happened without this race. It=s great for racing to get to see
these horses run again.@
With the Stronach Group now owning three spots it will be up
to Ritvo and his team to find horses to fill them and negotiate
deals. Each slot costs $1 million.
AWe put up the extra money to protect the purse of
$16 million,@ Ritvo said. ANow it=s up to us to cut deals with
people who may want to run. It could be a 50-50 deal, we could
sell the entire spot to someone. There are still a lot of horses out
there who are possibilities.@
One such horse is Sharp Aztecta (Freud), who is coming off a
win in the GI Cigar Mile. Trainer Jorge Navarro said his owner,
Ivan Rodriguez, wants to run in the race, but cannot make a
commitment because he is in the process of negotiating a deal
to sell an interest in the six-time stakes winner.
AWe have the money and want ro run,@ Navarro said. ABut
there is an offer out there right now for the horse and the owner
is willing to sell. He doesn=t want to sell the horse 100%, he
wants to keep a share. Right now, we are waiting for things to
fall into place and dealing with deadlines. We just want to do
the right thing for the animal.@
Ritvo said the owners of Prime Attraction (Unbridled=s Song),
the recent winner of the GIII Native Diver, had asked about a
spot and remain a possibility for the race. Saturday=s GIII
Harlan=s Holiday at Gulfstream could also produce a starter.
Trainer Todd Pletcher told the Daily Racing Form that should
Destin (Giant=s Causeway) run well in the $100,000 race, owners
Twin Creek Racing Stables might consider the Pegasus. Ritvo
said he also hopes to attract a starter from the December 26
GII San Antonio S. at Santa Anita.Cont. p4

Pegasus World Cup cont.
With three open slots left, Fipke still has the opportunity to
run Forever Unbridled in the race, but Stewart said he was
rather certain his owner was intent on passing with his mare.
The Stronach Group has gone to great lengths to ease the
financial burden on owners whose horses do not finish in the
top three. Several owners who put up the $1 million last year
were licking their wounds when the return on their investment
was in the neighborhood of $350,000. The Stronach Group took
$4 million out of its own pocket and added it to the $12 million
put up by the slot holders. By doing so, Gulfstream is now
guaranteeing a minimum return of $650,000 to all starters.
Toast of New York will be one of the more interesting horses in
the race. It was announced Friday that Reeves Thoroughbreds,
R.A. Hill and Eric Young had reached an agreement with Al
Shaqab Racing to partner on a slot in the race. When last seen in
the U.S., the now 6-year-old lost the 2014 GI Breeders= Cup
Classic to Bayern (Offlee Wild) by a nose. He did not race again
until Dec. 6 of this year, winning a race on a synthetic surface at
Lingfield in the U.K.
Taylor cont. from p1 Rather than have buyers ship a horse across the ocean only tofind that they couldn=t race him, Russell said it made sense forthe tests to be done here. AWe wanted to provide to our English clients some comfortthat they could buy here with confidence,@ he said, Aso wecontracted with the BHA for a system where they could betested here and we could warrant they were free of steroids. That test would be used for their importation and they wouldn=thave to be tested twice. It not only gives confidence to ourEnglish clients, but speed up the process of getting themtested.@ Taylor=s tweet was meant to underscore that the productbeing raised in America was clean, and in his mind, always hadbeen. The BHA announcement came just a year after two steroidscandals in Europe saw trainers suspended for a combined totalof 13 years. AI remember being in meetings with the CBA (the Consignorsand Breeders Association) where people from the BHA werethere and the tone was, `we know you guys are basically usinganabolic steroids to raise your horses,@ said Taylor. ATheimplication was that it was just commonplace everywhere, andso what are you going to do to give us proof that you=re cleaningup your act?@ Cont. p5

Taylor cont.
In fact, he said that Taylor Made typically sells between
12-15 percent of America=s
auction yearlings and the
concept that they were being
raised on steroids was foreign to
him.
AI had not seen that in our
universe of customers, and so it
was really an odd thing,@ he
said. AI didn=t understand where
it was coming from. It was a
potential big hit for our industry
because it had just been put out
there in the media like it was a
foregone conclusion.@
Russell said that Keeneland
had already introduced a
domestic test for steroids in
2008, and added the BHA test in 2015 to give buyers confidence
because of the perception that Taylor had heard in that
meeting.
AIf you even go back to when we introduced the domestic test,
there was that perception out there,@ said Russell. AI think the
fact that we now give the warranty to the buyers as to how
these horses are raised is a great thing for our marketplace and
our industry. As an industry, that=s what we=re trying to do, to
put confidence into the
marketplace. American sales
companies offer more
transparency than any in the
world.@
Taylor said that the letter from
Keeneland Awas a nicevalidation of what I pretty much
knew all along. We=ve got good
horsemen, state-of-the art
facilities, the best equinemedicine, but by and large the
way we raise horses is a very
organic process. We have been
doing it here in Kentucky forgenerations and not much has
changed. We raise horses with
the best nutrition, the best care, the best blacksmiths, and
produce the best product we can. Getting the letter made methink in a bigger concept, just in the world in general, that
everything gets painted with broad strokes and one thing can
trigger a much bigger judgement with very little factual
evidence to back it up.@ Cont. p6

The Taylor Made-sold Roaring Lion was one of
Europe=s best 2-year-olds in 2017 | Racing Post
Taylor cont.
Russell said that the requests for horses to be tested under the
BHA system has grown each year as Europeans seem to have a
growing and renewed faith in America=s product. One of theTaylor Made-sold horses tested last year, in fact, was the
$160,000 Keeneland September 2016 yearling Roaring Lion
(Kitten=s Joy), who will be one of the favorites in next year=s
G1 English 2000 Guineas after a win in the G2 Royal Lodge S. forQatar Racing. He missed by a neck in the G1 Racing Post Trophy
in his final 2017 start.
AHe=s one of the best 2-year-olds in Europe and we raised him
on the farm,@ said Taylor. AWe didn=t raise him any differentlythan we would have done before the BHA mandates.@
In fact, said Taylor, steroid usage was never a factor in the way
Taylor Made or his clients raised horses.
ANot within our customer base,@ he said. A[After the BHA
ruling] the only thing that did change was that there were
situations--and they were very infrequent--but if a horse was
recovering from surgery and their appetite was down and they
lost weight, you could use an anabolic steroid for a short time at
a low dose.@ Taylor said that that situation may have occurred
once every few years. AThat has now become a non-option, and
it has probably been a good thing find another way to take care
of them.@
Taylor said his tweet wasn=t meant to be caustic or
controversial. AI just wanted to shine a light on the way that
whole thing that popped up for a couple of years, and that it just
turned out to be nothing. I think it=s good because when you=re
raising and buying horses, the more transparent, the better. In
retrospect, I=m glad they did it because at the end of the day it
gave more confidence in our product. And American-breds are
winning around the world.@ Return to p1
A LONG ROAD HOME FOR MR SPEAKERby Ben Massam
When Mr Speaker (Pulpit) set foot on the grounds at Lane=s
End Farm Friday to begin preparations for the 2018 breeding
season, his return represented the culmination of a year-long
ordeal that left the third-year stallion quarantined in Chile being
treated for piroplasmosis, a tick-borne disease found in horses.
After covering 117 mares while fully syndicated in his first year
at Lane=s End in 2016, Mr Speaker was shipped to stand his
initial Southern Hemisphere season at Haras Cordillera in Chile.
When the GI Belmont Derby winner returned to Miami at the
conclusion of the year in December 2016, he was not permitted
to re-enter the United States due to a positive test--a
development that left the Lane=s End team searching for
answers.
AHe was tested when he left Chile, but they didn=t get the results until he got to Miami,@ said Bill Farish of Lane=s End.
AHe was tested again when he got to Miami, and he was
positive for piroplasmosis. They said the option was to send
him back to Chile...So he got back there and there was a very
lengthy treatment protocol that took a long, long time to work. He tested basically every month for a year. Thankfully, he=s testing negative again.@ Cont. p7

Mr Speaker cont.
The recent negative tests opened the door for the MrSpeaker=s return to America earlier this month. After spending aweek in quarantine in Miami, the stallion was finally cleared tomake his way back to Kentucky. AIt was quite a surprise,@ Farish said, reflecting on the pastyear. AIt really is a blow to syndicate members and to uswhenever you have a young stallion entering his second year atstud. When you can=t have that second season, it=s tough.@ When asked about Mr Speaker=s future prospects, Farish saidit has been a work in progress calling attention to the fact he hasreturned to the United States. Because Mr Speaker was absentfor the entirety of what would have been his second year at studin North America--effectively putting a halt to the continuity ofhis career--the young stallion will likely need to prove himself allover again in 2018. AIt=s just starting to dawn on people,@ Farish said. ATheshareholders are obviously well aware and excited to have himback, as are we. But with the general breeder out there, we=retrying to get the word out to them that he=s availableagain...He=s a very intriguing prospect being bred the same wayas Tapit and he=s such a good looking horse. It=s a new frontierfor us having a 3rd-year horse who wasn=t here his 2nd year.@ If there was a silver lining to an otherwise unfortunatesituation, it is that Farish and company were pleased with thereception given to Mr Speaker=s first foals at the November sale.Selling for up to $70,000, the weanlings drew positive reviewsfrom buyers and sellers alike reporting back to Farish. AHis weanlings were well received for a horse who wasn=t inthe country at the time,@ Farish said. ANot just the prices--wehad people coming up to us saying, >I=ve got a really nice Mr.Speaker.=@ Farish said the immediate concern remains raising awarenessthat Mr Speaker is back in the Bluegrass, and as such, he said heencourages visitors to Lane=s End Farm.

PRICEY TAPIT COLT EARNS RISING STAR
NOD AT AQUEDUCT
Marconi (Tapit), second behind stablemate Biblical (Tapit) over
this track-and-trip Nov. 17, stepped up off that performance
while adding blinkers for this ATDN Rising Star@-worthy
graduation. Hammered down to 3-5 favoritism, the $2-million
KEESEP buy missed the break and trailed the field through an
opening half in :49.28. Progressing up the backstretch run to be
fourth, the half-brother to GI Breeders= Cup Classic hero Mucho
Macho Man (Macho Uno) was squeezed between horses and
appeared to be losing momentum. Switched out four wide on
the far turn to launch another bid, the gray overtook the
longshot leader in mid-stretch and extended clear to don cap
and gown by 5 1/2 lengths over late-running Lonely Weekend
(Tiznow).
In addition to Mucho Macho Man, MGISW, $5,625,410,
Marconi is a full-brother to fellow ATDN Rising Star@ Southern
Girl, SW, $120,905, who sold to Marconi=s part-owner
Bridlewood Farm for $820,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton
November sale. Their stakes-winning dam Ponche de Leona
RNA=d for $1.4 million while carrying Southern Girl at the 2012
Fasig-Tipton November sale. She was sent back through the ring
at the 2014 Keeneland January sale with a Distorted Humor foal
in utero and summoned $775,000 from Brushwood Stable. The
resulting foal was a still unnamed colt, after which she produced
Marconi. She was bred back to Tapit, but failed to get in foal.
The 18-year-old mare produced an American Pharoah colt this
year and was bred back to Tapit.

2010 Champion Older Horse and GI Breeders= Cup Classic winner
Blame (Arch), who banked over $4.3 million in 13 starts.
His main threat Saturday will be Navistar (Union Rags), who
also sold for $900,000 at the OBS March sale. Navistar finished

>TDN Rising Star= PRINCIPE GUILHERME (Tapit) looks to take
his record to two-for-two Saturday after a dominating
6 1/4-length graduation Nov. 10 at Churchill Downs. The
$600,000 Fasig-Tipton November purchase is the first foal out of
2013 GI Human Distaff S. Aubby K (Street Sense), who was
purchased for $2.4 million by Jane Lyon=s Summer Wind Farm at
that same sale.
Breaking from the outside will be another high-priced Tapit
colt Dark Templar (Tapit). The chestnut was purchased for
$475,000 at last year=s Keeneland September sale and passed

AHIMSA (f, 2, Animal Kingdom--Hot Affair, by Cuvee) took the
field from gate-to-wire for an impressive debut graduation
Friday night. Breaking sharply from her rail draw, the chestnut
instantly took control, zipping through an opening quarter in
:22.21 and a half in :45.46. Taking the field into the lane with
Mike Smith still motionless in the irons, she kept on finding to
hold all challengers at bay by 2 1/4 lengths on the line. Fellow
firster Gracious Me (Into Mischief), a 22-1 shot, was second. The
winner is the second foal out of Hot Affair, who produced a full-

ARCHIPENKO DEAD AFTERBRIEF ILLNESS
Archipenko (Kingmambo--Bound I, by Nijinsky), who just last
weekend sired his third Group 1 winner in the G1 Hong Kong
Cup winner Time Warp (GB), has died at Lanwades Stud in
Newmarket due to a rare form of lymphoma at age 13. A press
release from Lanwades owner Kirsten Rausing read, Ahe had a
brief illness due to a rare, rapid and aggressive lymphoma. This
is a fatal but non-infectious condition that is, sadly, untreatable.
Until shortly before his death, Archipenko had been in good
health and in fact successfully covered mares to Southern
Hemisphere time at Lanwades.@
AArchipenko, as good-looking as he was well-bred, was a
delightful individual to deal with and he is an enormous loss to
Lanwades and the European Thoroughbred breeding industry in
general.@
Trained initially by Aidan O=Brien and campaigned in the
Michael Tabor silks, Archipenko won the G2 Derrinstown Stud
Derby Trial S. in 2007 but trailed in last behind Authorized (Ire)
(Montjeu {Ire}) in the blue riband. Three further Group 1
assignments that season resulted in off the board finishes, and
he was transferred to trainer Mike de Kock. Archipenko
reappeared at the 2008 Dubai carnival in the silks of Sheikh
Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum.
In his second start for his new connections he scooped the G2
Al Fahidi Fort S. He was third next out in the G1 Dubai Duty Free,
and put it all together for a Group 1 win next time in the G1
Audemars Piguet QEII Cup at Sha Tin. Archipenko returned to
Britain that summer to take the G2 Summer Mile S. at Ascot,
and put in a strong showing in a trip to America to be second in
the GI Arlington Million. Archipenko added one more group win
before his career came to a close, taking the G3 Zabeel Mile at
the 2009 Dubai carnival. Archipenko has stood his entire career
at Lanwades and he also shuttled to Argentina. There, he was
responsible for this year=s G1 Gran Premio General San Martin
winner Forty One (Arg) and three other Group 1 winners. His
European flagbearer was the G1 British Champions Fillies and
Mares S. winner Madame Chiang (GB), while Time Warp last
weekend gave his sire a Group 1 winner on three continents. He
is also the sire of Polish Triple Crown winner and German Group
3 winner Va Bank (Ire).

NEW COMPANY TO HANDLE IRISH INTEGRITY A new limited company has been created to handle Irish
racing=s integrity affairs, the Irish Field reports. The Turf Club and
the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee have created
the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board to regulate flat, National
Hunt and point-to-point racing. Regulation had previously been
carried out by The Turf Club and the INHSC, both private
companies, and the creation of a limited company to handle
regulation closes a loophole that could see legal action brought
by those affected by penalties, the Irish Field reported. The Turf
Club and the INHSC will continue to operate as private clubs and
will each nominate three directors to the board of the IHRB. The
new company will come into effect on Jan. 1.
Incoming IHRB Chairman Peter Allen said, ARacing, both as a
sport and an industry, faces many challenges today. Irish racing
has always had an excellent reputation and it is vital that
continues to be the case. The new company structure will
ensure we continue to invest in the integrity services that
underpin that reputation."
Meta Osborne, senior steward of the Turf Club, said, "The Turf
Club has served Irish racing well for more than 200 years.
Ireland is recognised worldwide in racing circles as having the
highest standards for integrity. I am confident that the IHRB will
raise these standards to an even higher level.@
Joining Peter Allen as directors of the IHRB are Harry
McCalmont, Martin O'Donnell, Caroline Corballis, Colm
O'Flaherty and J.J. Power.
TURNER ACKNOWLEDGES >HUGE MISTAKE= Jockey Hayley Turner, who was on Thursday banned for three
months for making bets through an online account while holding
a jockeys= license, admitted she made a Ahuge mistake,@ while
also acknowledging the complications of the situation. Turner
had retired from race riding and taken up a career in television
at the time she opened the account, although she still
technically held her jockeys= license. Licensed riders in Britain
are not allowed to bet on racing. "At the end of the day I made a
huge mistake and have to suffer the penalty as I did break the
rules,@ Turner said. "The problem was I saw myself as a
television pundit rather than as a jockey, which explains as to
why I started betting while working on ATR and on ITV.
Turner recently returned to race riding in France.
"Three months is a long time and I do think it is quite harsh,
especially as I have a mortgage to pay, but I have just got to take
it on the chin," she said.
Jamie Stier, chief regulatory officer of the BHA, said, "Hayley
Turner has made a full admission and apology regarding the
rules breaches she has committed, and the BHA's position was

that it is appropriate that this should be considered mitigation
when it comes to determining a penalty. The guideline entry
point for an offence of this nature is an 18-month
disqualification."
Paul Struthers, chief executive of the Professional Jockeys
Association, said, "Hayley opened an account with Paddy Power
after retiring from the saddle and placed recreational bets on
horse racing. Whilst pursuing her second career as a
broadcaster, Hayley made occasional returns to the saddle
either for invitational events or in preparation for those
occasional events and although she didn't bet whilst riding in
those events, the fact she was licensed and betting
recreationally on British horse racing placed her in breach of the
Rules of Racing. She has therefore been suspended for three
months for what amounts to technical breaches of the Rules of
Racing. This is on the one hand both disappointing and
disproportionate to the offences in question and is going to
prove very costly to Hayley. However, she undoubtedly had a
fair hearing, fully accepts responsibility for her unintended
breaches of the Rules of Racing and accepts the punishment.
Hayley understands that whilst her breaches were inadvertent it
is an important Rule of Racing that requires a penalty that is a
sufficient deterrent, even in innocent circumstances like hers."

Mayfair Speculators= six-time South African Group 1 winner

Van Huyssteen has around 175 horses in training and will aim
to win his first Group 1 win Legal Eagle, who is set to try for a
three-peat in the G1 L=Ormarins Queens Plate in early January.
The news of Legal Eagle=s sale comes while Mayfair
Speculators frontman Markus Jooste is, according to Reuters,
embroiled in accusations of accounting irregularities of Steinhoff
International, the international retail holding company from
which Jooste resigned as chief executive earlier this month.
MENARI SISTER WINS DEBUT
Sweet Ava (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), a full-sister to this season=s G2
Run To The Rose S. winner and G1 Golden Rose S. third Menari
(Aus), won a hot 2-year-old fillies= plate race at Canterbury on
debut on Friday. Racing, like her elder brother, in the colours of
George Altomonte=s Corumbene Stud and for trainer Gerald
Ryan, Sweet Ava settled third early, just off Godolphin=s
Membrillo (Aus) (Medaglia d=Oro), the joint $2.80 favourite with
her. Sweet Ava left Membrillo behind approaching the 600 to
draw within a head of the front-running Diamondsandjewels
(Aus) (Sepoy {Aus}), and overtook that stubborn rival under a
vigorous handride inside the final 100 metres to win by a neck.
China Horse Club=s A$500,000 yearling purchase Eawase (Aus)
(Sebring {Aus}) stayed on late to be third, while Membrillo
checked in fourth (video).
Ryan suggested Sweet Ava will be one for the later 2-year-old
features, telling Breednet.com.au, "She'll go to the paddock
Monday morning and have a couple of weeks out. We will see
how she comes back later in the autumn. I don't think she's a
Golden Slipper type--more a Sires' Produce or Champagne type
filly. She's still learning. It's the first time away from Rosehill and
she's still got a few little quirks to iron out but she's going the
right way."
TULIP BROTHER WINS JUMPOUT
Trainer David Hayes admitted to Racing.com that even he was
surprised by the speed shown by Sikorsky (Aus) (Pierro {Aus}),
the 2-year-old full-brother to Tulip (Aus), during his first
jumpout at Flemington on Friday. The dark bay was always in
control of the 800 metre heat and crossed the line in front
without being asked a question.
"We were really impressed with him; he wasn't out to run time
but he just did it under his own steam," Hayes told Racing.com.
"He'll probably have another jumpout as he didn't learn much
today, as he was out in front dominating the trial. Next time
we'll probably ride him in behind them just for education.
Hayes said he will start the colt out in the New Year and give
him Group 1 aims.
"We'll look to run him in the New Year; I really feel he might
be a Blue Diamond and Sires' Produce type of horse, I'm sure
he's a seven-furlong horse but he surprised me this morning
with that good speed,@ he said. "Everything he's shown me
suggests he's a [1400 metre to a miler], but watching the trial
today he might have more competitive speed than I thought.
The plan is to target the Blue Diamond, if he runs to his trial, he
certainly will be heading that way."
Hayes also handles the G2 Magic Night S. winner and G1
Golden Slipper third Tulip for a Coolmore partnership, and he
also trained the dam, Musidora. Sikorsky was bred by Orpendale
and sold through Coolmore Stud for A$500,000 to Hayes=s
Lindsay Park at this year=s Inglis Easter sale. Lindsay Park will
race him in partnership with Coolmore partners and Gary
Lechte.

DANOX DOUBLE HANDED IN FUTURITY Hanshin on Sunday hosts Japan=s first Group 1 of the season
for 2-year-old colts, the Asahi Hai Futurity S. The mile contest, as
the lone Group 1 race in its division, has historically been the
decider of 2-year-old champion honours, but this year a second
Group 1 for juvenile colts will be staged on Dec. 28, the G1
Hopeful S.
Owner Danox Co Ltd. holds a strong hand on Sunday, with
even-money favourite Danon Premium (Jpn) (Deep Impact
{Jpn}) and 10-1 shot Danon Smash (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) as
representatives. Both colts look for their third straight wins and
Danon Premium is unbeaten, having set a juvenile track record
when winning the G3 Saudi Arabia Royal Cup over Stelvio (Jpn)
(Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) at Tokyo on Oct. 7. Danon Premium came
back in trip to win that mile race, having broken his maiden over
1800 metres over this track on June 25.
Danon Smash, on the contrary, is stepping up from 1400
metres for the first time, but he was a facile three-length winner
of the Momiji S. at Kyoto on Oct. 15. Danon Smash looks to cap a
stellar season for Lord Kanaloa, the leading first-season sire, and
he is trained by Takayuki Yasuda, who also handled that
champion sprinter.
Danon Premium=s trainer Mitsumasa Nakauchida also sends
out Frontier (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}). The Sunday Racing
colourbearer won his first two starts but checked in fourth last
time in the G2 Daily Hai Nisai S. on Nov. 11. Nakauchida said,
AHe was unlucky last time, but that=s racing. He=s come out of
the race well though.@
Sheikh Mohammed sends out two Darley Japan-breds headed
by Tower Of London (Jpn) (Raven=s Pass), who has won three of
his four starts, his only loss being a second to Double Sharp
(Jpn) (Behkabad {GB}) second time out. Tower Of London tuned
up for this with a win in the G2 Keio Hai Nisai S. at Tokyo on
Nov. 4, and he steps up to a mile for the first time. Trainer Kazuo
Fujisawa won this race last year with Satono Ares (Jpn) (Deep
Impact {Jpn}), and he said of Tower Of London, AHe closed well
last time to win, and I=m thinking and hoping that he=ll just about
get the 1600 meters.@
Also carrying Sheikh Mohammed=s silks is the longshot Right
On Cue (Jpn) (Shamardal), who broke his maiden at second
asking at Kyoto on Nov. 18.
