Thisprojectisofcourseatakeonthehood/scarfcombinationcalledascoodie.Withanaddedfacemask,scarfpockets,andaddedshuriken,youhaveanaccessorywithaninjatwist!Thepatternitselfisgoodonitsownasascoodieifyouleaveofftheoptionaldetails.

Firstupisgettingthepocketsreadyforthescoodie.Sincewe’reusing

fleece,asimplesingle-foldhemforthetopedgeofthe

pocketswillsuffice.Ididaquickzigzagstitchalongtherawedgetomakeitlooknicer,butafterthatallyouneedtodoisfoldunderthestraightedgeofthepocketby1/2”andsewitinplace.Repeatthiswiththeotherpocketpieceaswell.

Nowwe’refreetoaddthesetoyourhoodpieces.Twoofyourhoodpieces

willbedesignatedasthelining,whiletheremainingtwo

willbetheouterhood.Youmightwanttolabelthesepartsnowtoavoidconfusion(aswellaswhat’stherightandwrongside).Withbothrightsidesfacingup,bastethecurvededgeofthepockettothebottomoftheouterhoodscarfarea.Thetopofthepocketisofcourseleftfreesoyouhaveyourpocketallreadytogo!Repeatthiswiththeotherpocketpieceandtheotherouterhoodpiece.

Sewyourtwoouterhoodpiecestogetheralongthecurvededgethatformsthecrownofthehood.Repeatthiswiththeliningpiecesaswell,butbesuretoleaveanopeninginthetopasthepatternindicatesforturningthehoodrightsideout.

Nowtakebothofyourouterhoodandhoodliningpiecesandmatchuptherawedgesaroundtheentireperimeterwithrightsidestogether.Sewaroundthisentireshapesonowyouhaveanicedouble-thickhoodwithfinishededgesallthewayaround.Clipandtrimyourseamallowances,turnthehoodrightsideout,andpresstheseams.

Withmainhoodalldone,allthat’sleftistocloseuptheopening.Simplytuckin

theseamallowancesintheopeningleftinstep3andsew

itclosedwithaladderstitch.

Nowforthefacemask:simplysewbothsidestogetherwithrightsides

facing,leavinganopeningalongthestraightsideasthe

patternindicates.Whenyoufinish,clipthecorners,turnthemaskrightsideout,andpresstheseams.

Justlikewiththeopeningofthehood,sewtheopeninginthefacemaskclosedwithaladderstitchaswell.

Oncethefacemaskisdone,you’llneedtosewsomebuttonholesinthecornerswherethepatternindicatessoyoucanattachittothehoodlater.Thesizeofyourbuttonholesshouldbebasedonthesizeofbuttonsyouhave,justbesurethey’resewnintheuppercornersofthemask.

Nextyou’llneedtoaddthebuttontotheinsideofyourhoodsothemaskcan

beattachedthere,simplystitchoneoneachsideofthe

hoodliningwherethepatternmarkingindicates.Ifyou’remakingthisforsomeonewithasmallerhead,you’llprobablywanttomovethebuttoninwardandupwardsoitfitsbetter,whileforsomeonewithalargerhead,movethebuttonoutwardanddownward.Italsohelpstotrypinningthemaskonfirsttofindaplacementthatworkswellforyou:D

Nowontotheshuriken!Tomakethecenter“hole,”Isimplyappliquédalittle

blackcircleinthemiddleoftheshurikenshape.Youcould

alsopainttheholewithfabricpaint,butIusedsomescrapblackfleece,lightweightfusibleweb,andasatinstitchtosewitdown.Repeatthiswithanotheroneofyourshurikenpiecesaswellsoyouhavetwofrontsides.

Sewtheshurikenstogetherbymatchingupanappliquédhalfwithanon-appliquedhalf.Thensewaroundtheentireperim-eterofthestar.Cliptheseamallowancesaroundthecurves.Thentoturnitrightsideout,clipalittleholeinthecenterbackoftheshurikenabout1”long,andusechopstickorsimilarturningtooltoturnthewholethingrightsideout.

Allthat’sleftistosewtheshurikenstotheendsofyourscoodie!Simplylaythebackoftheshurkienovertheliningofthehood(oppositetothepocket),andstitchitinplacewithaladderstitchgoingallthewayaroundthecenteroftheshuriken.Theholeyoucutpreviouslyshouldbecompletelyhiddennow.RepeatthiswiththeothersideofthescoodieandYOU’REDONE!
