CANCELLATIONS Cancellation notice must be received by Nippon Express Travel in writing (E-mail).

AND REFUNDS There aren’t any cancellation fees, but in some cases we will be obliged to charge the

actual expenses incurred by certain facilities and suppliers. There will be

no refund for individual’s missing meals, transfers or tours.

RATES All the rates are quoted per person in Japanese Yen.

The Kumano Kodo

Kumano, the spiritual heartland of Japan has stood the test of time. The Kumano Kodo is one of only two

pilgrimage World Heritage Sites globally. Its history stretches back over a thousand years.

For millennia the mountainous region of Kumano has been thought to be the mythical “holy ground where gods

dwell.” During the Heian period (794 - 1185), the Imperial household and court made the 30 to 40 day arduous

journey from the ancient capital of Kyoto to this remote area, in search of heaven on earth. It is here that Kumano

Sanzan, the three grand shrines and Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple, were established.

Leave Kii Tanabe station for Michinoeki Chikatsuyu by local bus at 10:15. After arriving short experience of Kumano Kodo (JPY500p.p. payment on the spot). You can choose your course from three (60min. – 180min.).Drive to starting point and walk back to Michinoeki. After experience leave for Kawayu Onsen by local bus. Stay at Ryokan Midoriya.

After breakfast, drive to Hosshinmon-oji by local bus. The Kumano Kodo route from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha is lined with history and culture. This section follows a combination of mountain trails and roads through isolated ridge-top communities before descending to the Grand Shrine. (7km, 4-5hours) Stay at Ryokan Midoriya.

After breakfast, drive to Shingu station by local bus and get on Limited Express train “Kuroshio”.

Arrive at Kii Katsuura and leave for Daimonzaka by local bus. Start walking to Kumano Nachi

Taisha, Seiganto-ji and Nachino Otaki. (3km,1.5–2hours) Leave for Kii Katsuura by local bus.

Take JR train from Kyoto station to Sonobe station (50min.), picked up and transfer to accommodation in Miyama (12:30 or 14:30). After 15:00 check-in. Upon arrival start self-guided tour of the thatched village on foot. Japanese style catering dinner at your accommodation.

After breakfast, free at leisure. Please enjoy country rural life in Japan. Stay at thatched roof house or enjoy optional activities. Rental bicycle, bicycle tour, Japanese cooking class…etc.. Dinner: Barbecue set by self-cooking.

After breakfast and checking out of the accommodation, you can enjoy some experiences; Gohei

rice cake making, Cypress chopsticks making or Buckwheat noodle (Soba) making. Transfer to

Narai station and take a train to Matsumoto by JR local train (60 min). Arrive at Matsumoto station.

You may completely feel like a traveler in

the Edo period.

Narai-juku was one of the historic post stations along the Nakasendo, an ancient highway connecting Edo

(Tokyo) and Kyoto. It was located at the foot of the Torii Pass, one of the hardest parts to go through the

Nakasendo. Among 11 post stations in the Kiso area, Narai-juku prospered very much, called “Narai Senken

(Narai of a thousand inns).” Narai-juku is almost exactly halfway between Tokyo and Kyoto and marks the

34th post station from both places. The area extends about 1km along the Narai River and is the longest

post station in Japan. It still retains the atmosphere of the historic Edo era very much, attracting tourists to a

nostalgic world.

Take JR train from Matsumoto station to Yabuhara station (60min.). Let’s head for Torii Pass from Yabuhara station. Bear bells & cypress hats rental available. Along the steep slope toward Torii Pass, the separation point to the Hida-kaido(Oiwake) can be found among others. As you follow the stone-paved section of the Toge-michi (Torii Pass Trail) and ascend a winding pass, you will find a cluster of historical-interest spots. On the way you pass the Naka-no Chaya Rest area and follow a stone-paved path before arriving in the old post town of Narai-juku (Full distance: 6.15km/3 hours). Stay & dinner at Minshuku.

Ikebana (flower arrangement) is one of the representative aspects of Japanese traditional culture, and

ikebana began with Ikenobo. In 1462 the name Senkei Ikenobo first appeared in historic records as “master

of flower arranging.” Senno Ikenobo, who was active in the late Muromachi period (mid-16th century),

established the philosophy of ikebana, completing a compilation of Ikenobo teachings called “Senno Kuden.”

Senno Ikenobo taught, “Not only beautiful flowers but also buds and withered flowers have life, and each

has its own beauty. Arranging flowers and finding beauty in flowers - these are linked to a heart that values

nature and cares for other people. This is the spirit of Ikenobo Ikebana.

Guests can take part in the morning service just before dawn by the monks of Eiheiji temple,

including sutra reading, and burning incense. After breakfast and checking out of the

accommodation by 10:00. Take a local bus (30 min.) and train “Thunderbird” to Kyoto (90 min.) .

You can feel the heart of Zen at Eiheiji Temple.

Eiheiji, "The Temple of Eternal Peace", is one of the two head temples of Soto Zen. It is located deep in the

mountains, near the northwest coast of Japan, not far from Fukui City. This temple was founded by Zen

Master Dōgen in 1244. He was offered land and other help for this by Yoshishige Hatano, a samurai who

was one of his most devoted lay followers. Dōgen thus founded Eiheiji, where he devoted himself to training

his followers in the perfection of Zen practice in every action of daily life. Dōgen Zenji's authentic Zen has

been scrupulously observed and passed down by his successors. Still today, at Eiheiji over one hundred

monks devote themselves wholeheartedly to his practice of shikantaza （"single-minded sitting"）.
