Musical Gems: NISO's 30th Anniversary Season

by Shelbi Gesch Northwest Iowa Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 30th anniversary season this year with an exciting lineup of concerts. The theme for this year's concert season is "Musical Gems." With several special guest performances and excel-lent musical selections, this multi-faceted season promises to sparkle. "Here's The Story" is the theme for the fall concert, which features several musical pieces that tell a story. The evening's performances will include the “symphonic poem" The Moldau by Smetana, a piece by Iowa-based composer Linda Robbins Coleman inspired by the George Bernard Shaw play "In Good King Charles's Golden Days," and the familiar Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofé. Guest musician Dr. John Bailey from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will be the featured flautist during a performance of Fantaisie Brilliante on Themes from 'Carmen' by Borne. On February 4, NISO welcomes the Lark Quartet, a string quartet from New York City that brings a new light to chamber music through programs that cover music from western traditional chamber music to recent music from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The Lark Quartet has per-formed concerts throughout the world, and they will be hosting a brief resi-dency which includes a workshop for young string players, culminating in a joint performance during the evening concert. For more information on the Lark Quartet, visit www.larkquartet.com. This year's Winter Pops Concert, "A Night with the Okee Dokee Brothers,” is scheduled for February 25, and will feature music from the Okee Dokee Brothers, friends since childhood years growing up in Denver, Colorado. The

Brothers are Grammy-award-winning musicians who blend their passion for the outdoors with their love of Americana Folk Mu-sic. "A Night with the Okee Dokee Brothers" promises a great night

of music for the family, which will inspire listeners to get out and explore the gems of our American outdoors. The Okee Dokee Brothers' website can be found at www.okeedokee.org. Closing the 30th Anniversary season with a punch on April 11 at 7:00pm is "Rocky! An All-Rachmaninoff Program." Russian-born composer Rachmani-noff is often referred to as "Rocky" by orchestral musicians because of the powerful impact of his music. Pieces featured in this performance will include Vocalise, Op. 34, No. 14; Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18; and Sym-phonic Dances, Op. 45. In celebration of NISO's 30th season, former NISO conductor Henry Duitman will return to conduct the symphony for the per-formance of Piano Concerto No. 2, which will also feature guest pianist Sean Botkin from the University of Northern Iowa. Please visit the NISO website at http://niso.dordt.edu for more information on upcoming concerts, tickets, and times.
