The Week That Was
Nifty reclaims 10,000 mark
Local stock markets logged gains for second consecutive week on account of easing of
nationwide lockdown. Steady foreign fund inflows and positive cues from global
markets also boosted sentiment. Key indices logged gains throughout the week,
except a small decline on Thursday.
In the week ended on Friday, 5 June 2020, the Sensex jumped 1,863.14 points or 5.75%
to settle at 34,287.24. The Nifty 50 index soared 561.85 points or 5.86% to settle at
10,142.15.
The BSE Mid-Cap index rallied 710.94 or 6% to settle at 12,554.16. The BSE Small-Cap
index surged 962.57 points or 8.84% to settle at 11,855.17.
Domestic shares ended with robust gains on Monday, 1 June 2020. Easing of lockdown,
betterthan-expected GDP numbers and positive global cues boosted market
sentiment. The barometer S&P BSE Sensex jumped 879.42 points or 2.71% at
33,303.52. The Nifty 50 index gained 245.85 points or 2.57% at 9,826.15.
Indices spurted on Tuesday, 2 June 2020. Sentiment got a boost after Prime Minister
NarendraModi assured industry leaders on Tuesday that India will get its economic
growth back and is already on that path with government's various reforms. The
barometer S&P BSE Sensex jumped 522.01 points or 1.57% at 33,825.53. The Nifty 50
index gained 152.95 points or 1.56% at 9,979.10.
Stocks extended their winning streak to sixth straight session on Wednesday, 3 June
2020. Global cues were supportive as hopes of more stimulus and further easing in
social restrictions around the world surpassed coronavirus fears. The sentiment was
also boosted by Prime Minister NarendraModi's comment on Tuesday that India's
economy would get back on track supported by systematic reforms. The barometer
S&P BSE Sensex jumped 284.01 points or 0.84% at 34,109.54. The Nifty 50 index
soared 82.45 points or 0.83% at 10,061.55.
Barometers ended with small losses on Thursday, 4 June 2020 snapping a six-day rising
streak. Selling in banks stocks put pressure on bourses. Banks corrected after the
Supreme Court (SC) raised concerns over levying of interests on loans during the six-
month moratorium period. The barometer S&P BSE Sensex lost 128.84 points or
0.38% at 33,980.70. The Nifty 50 index fell 32.45 points or 0.32% at 10,029.10.
On Friday, 5 June 2020, the market ended with strong gains resuming its uptrend after
a day's pause. Gradual lifting of lockdown measures and expectations of further
government stimulus boosted investor confidence. The barometer S&P BSE Sensex
gained 306.54 points or 0.9% at 34,287.24. The Nifty 50 index rallied 113.05 points or
1.13% at 10,142.15.
The Cabinet further provided approval for provisioning of Rs 20,000 crore as
subordinate debt to provide equity support to the stressed MSMEs. It also approved
the changes to the definition of micro, small and medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Raising the turnover limit for medium enterprises to Rs 250 crore, the government
aims to broaden the scope of MSMEs. Enterprises with Rs 1 crore investment and Rs 5
crore turnover would now qualify as micro enterprises.
Moody's Investors Service on Monday, 1 June 2020 downgraded India's rating to Baa3
and maintained the negative outlook. Moody's has downgraded India's local-currency
senior unsecured rating to Baa3 from Baa2, and its short-term local-currency rating to
P-3 from P-2. The decision to downgrade India's ratings reflects Moody's view that the
country's policymaking institutions will be challenged in enacting and implementing
policies which effectively mitigate the risks of a sustained period. Moody's expects
prolonged period of slow growth to continue well beyond the pandemic. India's
progress has been hamstrung by tardy implementation of reforms, it said.
On the macro front, India's economy grew at 3.1% in Q4 March 2020. The gross
domestic product (GDP) had expanded by 5.7% in the corresponding quarter of 2018-
19, according to data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO). In 2019-20, the
Indian economy grew by 4.2% against 6.1% expansion recorded in 2018-19. The

government has also revised down the GDP growth in Q1, Q2, and Q3 to 5.2%, 4.4%,
and 4.1% respectively. Estimates will undergo revision as statutory data submission
deadlines were extended by government in view of COVID-19 outbreak, Ministry of
Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) said in a press note. Meanwhile,
the growth rate of Index of Eight Core Industries for April 2020 declined by 38.1%
(provisional) compared to decline of 9% (provisional) in March 2020.
Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted IHS Markit India Manufacturing PMI rose to 30.8
in May from 27.4 in April. The latest reading pointed to another substantial decline in
the health of the Indian manufacturing sector, albeit one that was slightly softer than
recorded in April.
The IHS Markit India Services Business Activity Index recorded 12.6 in May 2020.
Although the headline figure rose from April's unprecedented low of 5.4, it remained
at a level which, prior to the coronavirus pandemic, was unparalleled in over 14 years
of data collection and pointed to an extreme drop in services activity across India.
In Europe, the European Central Bank (ECB) has boosted its pandemic emergency
support program by an unexpectedly large 600 billion euros ($672 billion) to a total of
1.35 trillion euros ($1.5 trillion) through a bond buying program called "Pandemic
Emergency Purchase Programme" (PEPP), in an effort to keep affordable credit
flowing to the economy during the steep downturn caused by the virus outbreak.
The ECB also said it would extend the program until June 2021, and reinvest maturing
PEPP securities until at least the end of 2022. ECB President Christine Lagarde has
called it an "unprecedented contraction" in the euro zone economy.
Global cues to dictate market trend

dollar, Brent crude oil price movement and investments by foreign portfolio investors

with 3,91,261 deaths. India reported 1,10,960 active cases of COVID-19 infection and
