II. Hydra IQ activates the skin's natural moisture network for

    over 24 hours

The skin is our body's largest organ and plays a central role in our sense

of well-being. For it to stay healthy and attractive, one thing is critical:

H2O. Water activates the functions of our body's some 300 million skin

cells, supporting them in regeneration and other important structural

    work.

Healthy skin stores some one-third of our body's total water reserves.

This moisture is conveyed from cell to cell by the skin's own intelligent

distribution system. Stress, harmful environmental influences such as

too much sun, too little sleep or unhealthy eating habits can throw this

natural moisture network out of balance. This has consequences: If the

supply and distribution of the water from the lower to the upper layers of

the skin does not function optimally, the surface of the skin over the

entire body becomes dryer, tightens and can lose elasticity.

In seven years of intensive research work, Beiersdorf scientists have

"translated" their in-depth knowledge of the physiological workings of the

skin into an active ingredient technology that is just as intelligent as

nature: Hydra IQ regulates moisture supply and distribution from the

inside with a non-stop moisturizing effect that lasts for over 24 hours.

Effective immediately, this innovation has been implemented in NIVEA's

    bestselling body care products.

    A sensational discovery

The basis for the worldwide exclusive technology is a discovery that

earned the 2003 Noble Prize for Chemistry: US-based molecular

biologist Peter Agre discovered previously unknown proteins, which hecalled aquaporins. Aquaporins form microscopically small pores in the

cell membrane that regulate the transport of water into and out of the

cell. "The discovery of aquaporins also enabled us to see the skin's

moisture supply in a completely new light," says Dr. Annika Schrader,

Laboratory Manager in the Skin Aging area at Beiersdorf. "Our research

showed that the number of aquaporins in the cell membrane can decide

how effectively water is distributed in the skin. It became evident that dry

skin has significantly fewer aquaporins than well hydrated skin.

Therefore, the better the aquaporin network, the better the skin can besupplied with moisture. This discovery was followed by the next

groundbreaking discovery of Beiersdorf's research team: The skin's own

moisture network can be activated with Hydra IQ!

The secret behind the one-of-a-kind formula is made up of glycerin and

glucose, two vital substances for the skin and both identical to those

found in nature. After numerous laboratory tests on skin cells,

Beiersdorf's skin researchers have discovered the optimum combination

of both active ingredients to attain maximum effectiveness on

aquaporins. Tests over two weeks prove that the moisture content of the

skin increases significantly and water supply to the skin over time is also

improved significantly. Even after three more days without use, the

moisture content of the skin is clearly higher than that of untreated skin.

Dr. Annika Schrader: "When many aquaporins are present, the water

transport from the lower skin layers upwards can be increased. The

water can flow more efficiently from cell to cell and be distributed

    optimally."

With Hydra IQ, a new era in body care begins now: non-stop

moisturizing for over 24 hours the good feeling never ends!

III. Q&A: Body care lotion with non-stop moisturizing effect

    how does it work?

Interview with Dr. Annika Schrader, R&D, Skin Care

    Research, Beiersdorf

What is the importance of water for the skin?

Water is an indispensable building block for properly functioning skin

cells. Normally, natural moisturizing factors bind the water in the skin and

ensure adequate moisturizing. In addition, lipids in the stratum corneum

of the skin provide a strong barrier, ensuring that the skin's water does

not escape to the outside. Only this internal moisture gives the skin an

attractive healthy and elastic appearance. If the body is lacking water,

the water in the skin cells is particularly reduced. The resistance of the

skin and the function of the enzymes are decreased, the structure of the

stratum corneum is poorer, and the skin dries out and becomes rough.

From where does healthy skin draw moisture?

The largest water reservoir of the epidermis is in its deep layers. These

layers are supplied by blood vessels from even deeper layers. If the

water supply permits, water is transported via the blood vessels all the

way to the upper dermis, directly below the epidermis.

All I need to do to provide an optimum supply of moisture to the

skin is drink eight glasses of water a day, right?

That is definitely a good starting point. However, the amount of water

alone does not determine whether the skin can be supplied optimally

with moisture. Another critical factor is how well and intensively it is

distributed by the skin's own water network.

How should we picture the skin's own water network?

Water is exchanged between the cells via microscopically small

channels, known as aquaporins. They are located in the cell membranes

and can regulate the transport of water into and out of the cells. The

better the structure of this network, the more moisture can flow into the

skin and be distributed. Thus an intact aquaporin network is one of the

most important conditions for optimally moisturized skin, all the way

down to the deeper layers of the epidermis.

What brings this ingenious natural distribution system out of

    balance?

Under the influence of factors that cause the skin to dry out, such as UV

rays, stress or an unhealthy diet, skin functions will at some point no

longer be optimal. This can also affect the aquaporins. Under conditions

that dry the skin, fewer of these water channels are found there. This

means that the water of the lower skin layers can no longer be

    distributed optimally in the epidermis.

How does Hydra IQ promote the formation of aquaporins?

Hydra IQ activates the skin's own aquaporin network with glucose-

glycerol, a substance identical to nature, by stimulating the formation of

new aquaporins. The active ingredient triggers biochemical processes in

the cell that cause the corresponding proteins to form in the right place.
