Joe Calfapietra has built a very distinguished career for himself as manager of the New Jersey Jackals. One of the longest tenured managers in minor league baseball, Calfapietra recently completed his 11th season at the helm of the New Jersey club. A three-‐time manager of the year, Calfapietra had the Jackals a win away from capturing the franchises fifth league championship, and first in the Can-‐Am League when the Jackals pushed the Quebec Capitales to Game 7 of the 2013 Can-‐Am League Championship series. However, New Jersey came up short to Quebec for the third consecutive year. Calfapietra began his coaching career as a player/coach with the Allentown Ambassadors from 1997-‐99 under the guidance of his longtime confidant Ed Ott, before becoming the clubs manager in 2000 at the age of 29. After spending a year at Gary SouthShore in 2002, he was hired as Jackals manager in 2003, and it has been a perfect marriage ever since. He took the Jackals to a Northeast title in 2004, and won his 500th game on August 30, 2012, and his 550th game on August 23, 2013. “It doesn’t feel like it,” Calfapietra said reflecting on his 11 years. “It’s very gratifying to the point of saying the organization thinks so highly of you. By the same token every year is a new year for me.” A Royersford, PA native, Calfapietra played first base at Eastern College in St. David’s, was a two-‐time DIII All American selection at first. After not getting drafted he went to coaching and earned a masters degree in education.

New Jersey Jackals 2014 Record Book
The 2013 New Jersey Jackals were a special lot. While this group came up just short of their ultimate goal of winning a Can-‐Am League Championship, this year’s club will be remembered as one of the grittiest Jackals’ teams to come through in years. The 2013 Jackals overcame injuries, prolonged slumps, a six game deficit for second place, and a .500 record to get into the postseason for the fifth straight year, and third straight in the Can-‐Am title game. Early in the year, the club struggled to find the right formula in the starting rotation. However, the biggest blow of the year had to be the loss of Isaac Pavlik for the season with a torn ACL. Still the Jackals fought. They feasted on the Newark Bears and put together a number of late inning comebacks against Three Rivers and Rockland. The rotation was stabilized by Craig Bennigson, who became the team’s ace, winning eight games and pitching to a 2.96 ERA from May 31 to the end of the year. The additions of Brandon Moore and Wes Roemer helped as well. Offensively, Jeremy Barnes, Chris Duffy and Chris Curran led the Jackals. However, it was the trade for Matt Padgett and Lucas Irvine, and the return of John Lindsey that proved to be the difference, as New Jersey put together a 21-‐9 finish to get into the postseason. In the playoffs, the Jackals overcame a 3-‐1 deficit to push the Capitales to Game 7. However Quebec stormed back to win the series late in Game 7.

New Jersey Jackals 2014 Record Book
Jackals Highlights: Switch-‐hitting outfielder spent more time with the Jackals (six seasons) than any other position player in organization history. His 503 career hits in a Jackals’ uniform are 198 more than any other Jackal.
Smithlin also holds the Jackals’ career records for games played (472), runs scored (287), and stolen bases (154). Following the 2004 season in which he helped lead New Jersey to a Northeast League Title, Smithlin’s contract was purchased by the San Diego Padres, but he was not re-‐assigned after spring training. Upon returning to the Jackals, Smithlin turned in a career year in 2005, batting .358 while leading the Can-‐Am league with 135 hits and 40 stolen bases, while representing the Jackals in the All-‐Star Game in Brockton. Three years later, Smithlin once again lead
the league in stolen bases, stealing 33 bases in 2008. Worth Noting: Smithlin’s number was retired by the Jackals on July 30, 2011 between games of a doubleheader against the Pittsfield Colonials. After a successful run at Penn State, Smithlin signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a non-‐drafted free agent in 2003 and spent his rookie campaign with the New Jersey Cardinals, playing 44 games at the Cardinals’ New York-‐Penn League outpost at Skylands Park before signing with the Jackals in 2004. Smithlin spent his entire eight-‐year career in the Garden State, including his first professional season in 2003 with the New Jersey Cardinals and brief stints during his final season in 2001 with the Atlantic League’s Somerset Patriots and Newark Bears. New Jersey Jackals 2014 Record Book JOEL BENNETT Right Handed Pitcher # 28 Seasons with Jackals: seven (2001-2007) Number Retired: August 22, 2008 Born: 1/31/70 Binghamton, N.Y. Hometown: Windsor, N.Y. College: East Stroudsburg University Jackals Highlights: In seven seasons with New Jersey (2001-‐2007), Bennett went 59-‐19 and posted a 2.83 ERA while striking out 632 batters in 660 innings, leading the Jackals to three league championships (2001, 2002, and 2004). Bennett held most Jackals pitching records until he was passed by Isaac Pavlik in 2012 and 2013. On June 23, 2002, he set the team’s single-‐game strikeout record when he fanned 16 Albany-‐Colonie Diamond Dogs. Bennett’s best season in a Jackals’ uniform came in 2003, when he compiled an 8-‐1 record with a miniscule 1.93 ERA in 12 starts. Bennett announced his retirement following the 2007 season at the age of 38 after 17 professional seasons and over 1,800 innings pitched. Worth Noting: Bennett’s number was retired by the Jackals on August 22, 2008 prior to a contest against the Brockton Rox. Bennett appeared in seven major league games for the Phillies and Orioles in 1998 and 1999. During several of his seasons with the Jackals, Bennett pulled double duty, both playing and serving as New Jersey’s pitching coach. In each of his final five seasons with the Jackals, Bennett, who spent the offseason as a physical education teacher near his hometown of Binghamton, N.Y., joined the Jackals midway through the season in June. Bennett was selected in the 21st round of the 1991 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox out of East Stroudsburg University. Yogi Berra Catcher #8 Born 5/12/1925 in St. Louis, Mo. Resides: Montclair, N.J 1972 Baseball Hall of Famer Worth Noting: Berra is a long-‐time Montclair resident. The Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center overlooks the stadium’s first-‐base side, and was named in his honor in 1998, the first year of the stadium and museum.
New Jersey Jackals 2014 Record Book Berra was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972 following a 19-‐year major league career spent entirely with the New York Yankees. He was an 18-‐time All-‐Star
and three-‐time MVP. He is regarded as the greatest catcher in baseball history, with 358 homers and 1,430 RBI. He is one of just six managers in major league history to lead both an American (Yankees in 1977 & 1978) and a National League club (Mets 1973) to the World Series. Berra appeared in 21 World Series as a player and a coach, winning 13 World Series rings. Always with a twinkle in his eye, and the classic “Yogi-‐ism” at the ready, Berra is considered one a true national treasure to baseball fans all over.
While there was never an official ceremony to retire Berra’s number at Yogi Berra Stadium, no Jackal has ever worn number eight. Berra’s number is one of two number eights retired by the New York Yankees (Other is fellow catcher Bill Dickey).
