A group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources within clearly defined electrical boundaries that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid. A microgrid can connect/disconnect from the grid to enable it to operate in both grid-connected and island mode.

MICROGRIDS: Why do it?

80-90% of all grid failures begin at the distribution level of electricity service.* Promotes more competition which equals more choice and more reliable, cleaner

energy at competitive prices. Cities and states see microgrids to spur economic growth by increasing jobs to

build and manage the microgrid and by attracting businesses that depend on premium energy that is always available.

Certain energy market trends favor microgrids, Natural gas and solar prices – two fuels for microgrids – have fallen dramatically in recent years. Lower fuel prices make microgrids cost-effective to operate. Prices also are declining for electric energy storage.

New smart grid technology allow microgrids to be more sophisticated. Real-time data displays, grid interfaces, and various software advances maximize their use and resources for greatest economy.

Industry and government officials are very worried about grid reliability, security, and accountability. Microgrids can keep the power flowing when the central grid faces threats.
