Message
by Swamiji
Swami Nachiketananda
Every object in this world is trying
to convey some message to you, be
it a human being an animal, a rock
or a tree. A dog which is near you is
also trying to teach you something
of which you are aware because of
your ignorance.
Do not confine yourselves to
boundaries created by you. Even a
criminal person is trying to teach
something. You might be a computer
engineer but you do not know that
even a computer is trying to give you
some message. You treat it as a
non-living object and your
knowledge regarding it is limited.
Your ignorance is sprouting from
Ego and ego from greed,
selfishness and other shadripus. It
is because of your ignorance that
you are unable to perceive the
beauty of every object. A guru helps
you by removing your ignorance.
He tries to unfold the knowledge
which is already within you, but
covered by layers of ignorance.
The real Guru tries to remove the
upper layers of ignorance andgives you a glimpse of the SELF!
The heart that gives, gathers. 5

Prana syedam vyashe sarvam
trideavayath pratishtithamI Maateva putraan rakshasva
srishcha pragnaamshcha
videhi na iti !
Meaning: Whatever exists in three
worlds is all under the control of Prana.
( O Prana) Protect us as a mother
protects her children. Give us
affluence and intelligence.
Pranayama consists of two words
Prana and Ayama. Prana means
life force, Ayama means control orexpansion.
Prana which is the life force exists
in every being of the universe. Without
Prana the object is dead. Mother
Prana nourishes and takes care of us.
These days Pranayama is gaining
popularity for different reasons. While
some adopt it to be physically fit, some
practice it to improve concentration
and memory, and others to cure various
ailments. The real purpose ofPranayama is to purify all the nadis to
experience all psychic nodes.
Pranayama is the Science of
Breath than mere breathing exercise.
Fast breathing like in a dog and few
other animals reflects on their shorter
life span whereas slow breathing as
in the case of a tortoise results in a
longer life span. This is the Natures
illustration that proper breathing can
increase your lifespan. There are yogis
in the Himalayas who practice
Pranayama and live for hundreds of
years.
According to Patanjali Yoga Sutras
Pranayama begins only after
preparing your body for higher spiritual
discipline through practicing Yama,
Niyama and Asanas. For best results
Pranayama should be practiced only
after purifying the mind and should be
done under the guidance of a perfect
Guru. Practicing with purified mind will
lead to an encounter with the subtle
nadis which are otherwise difficult to
experience. You can feel the flow ofPrana through the Chakras.
A fruitful practice of Pranayama
also demands a balance of diet,
constant watch over thoughts and a
strong physical body. Pranayama
activates the dormant energy. In order
to sustain the activated energy, it is
essential to fulfill the requirement of
the entire process of purification.
Pranayama is the science of
Spirituality that helps calm your mindand in the process it pushes you into
the deeper state of meditation where
you experience the union of various
energies. The ultimate purpose of
Pranayama should be to unite you with
the supreme soul!
Pranayama by Mataji
Change your thoughts and change your world.

My name is Usha. I have
been volunteering at
Nachiketa Tapovans Vidya
Mandir for 8 months. I have
been teaching U.K.G. I like
being in Tapovan very much.
I find it full of positivevibrations. I find that the kids
are quite intelligent and all they
need is some guidance. My
contribution to the
organization could be very
small but the amount of
satisfaction it gives me is very
large. I find rest of the staff and
volunteers very energetic and
positive with a heartyinvolvement in the activities of
Nachiketa Tapovan.

Vidya Mandir - Volunteers' Views
No man can sincerely try to help another without helping
himself.
My experience at Nachiketa
Tapovan Vidya Mandir is one of a
kind. I get to see so many different
kinds of mentalities, culture and of
course reactions. The happiness
in the children when I give them a
pencil or eraser is sooverwhelming. Some kids are
laughing, some are crying, few are
dull. I see so many different kinds
of things happening at one place. I
love it when the kids come up to
me every morning and say good
morning with so much love
affection and enthusiasm. I feel
that all the children are my own. I
have developed such a goodrapport with the entire organization
that Im so sure Ill find it difficult to
part my way from it.

A young seeker of truth, dares go to
the God of Death- Yama, for knowing
the truth about the nature of human souland its destiny. What is more, he elicits
from Yama, the full course of the
pathway to the Realization of the great
truth.
Let us traverse with young
Nachiketa, the hero of our story on this
pathway and experience and understand
how he has gained the mystic knowledge
about the Soul and Supreme Spirit.
Nachiketa was the son of Maharshi
Uddalaka who once decided to performa yagna to gain name and fame. It was
customary in those days to donate cows
to the Brahmins at the end of the Yaga.
Uddalaka was a miser and he donated
old and weak cows which disturbed
Nachiketa.
He asked his father repeatedly,
Father, to whom would you give me in
charity? This made his father lose his
temper and said, I give you to the
Yama. Hearing this Nachiketa went tothe kingdom of Yama to obey his
fathers command.
Yama was absent from his home and
Nachiketa decided to wait at his
doorstep for three long days without
food. When Yama returned he was
surprised to see a young Brahmin
fasting on his doorsteps. He invited
Nachiketa to a seat near him and
requested him to ask for three boons,
one for each of the three days of the
fast.
Nachiketa declared, My first wish
is, when I return home may my father
welcome me lovingly. AccordinglyYama granted his wish. Nachiketa went
on, I learn that there is no fear in the
heaven. People are not afflicted by old
age, hunger and thirst in that happy
place. I ask you to give me that
Knowledge as the second boon. Yama
was very much pleased with Nachiketas
question. He gave him the knowledge
of a certain Sacrifice, taught him how
to perform it correctly and told him that
one who performs that sacrifice would
go directly to heaven. He further named
that particular Yagna after Nachiketa
and the fire used in that Sacrifice is
'Nachiketagni.'
Nachiketa continued, My third and
last wish is to grant me the Knowledge
of the Atma. Yama who granted the
first two boons immediately tried to
convince Nachiketa to give up the third
wish and instead offered all the riches
in the world. Nachiketa was firm in his
quest and Yama had to grant him thethird boon also.
Nachiketa was enlightened with the
Knowledge of the Atma. He has
inspired us to be strong willed even in
the face of difficulties and to seek
eternal happiness.
