NATUREBIODIVERSITY

REPORTING

Many of us regularly see wildlife in the park. Cardiff council biodiversity team and SEWBReC want to map wildlife around Cardiff, including Hailey Park.

You can do this by going to http://www.sewbrec.org.uk/biological-recording.page and downloading a ‘casual sighting report form’ or obtaining the form from any of the FOHP meetings or events.

NATURECardiff Naturalists’ and FOHP’s joint walk

On Wednesday 25th June FOHP and Cardiff Naturalists held a joint walk on Hailey Park, looking at the biodiversity of plant and animal life on the park. Bruce MacDonald of Cardiff Nats together with Suzy and Penny of FOHP provided the information.

We were also privileged to have Dr Mary Gillham attend. Dr Gillham has been an active member of the Cardiff Nats society for decades and continues to be one of the most highly respected naturalists in South Wales.

20 people attended the event, which due to its success will be held again on Thursday 23.7.09 6.30-8pm (meet at Hailey park car park)

We finished the walk with tea and homemade scones.

HISTORYCLAUDE PERCIVAL HAILEY:

BUSINESSMAN & PHILANTHROPIST.

At our first AGM in April, Mr David Clark very kindly gave a talk about Claude Hailey, who donated part of the land for Hailey Park. Mr Clark’s brother was married to Claude Hailey’s daughter. An extract of his eloquent talk follows.

During the city of Cardiff’s period of economic success at the turn of the 20th century when it was rightly acclaimed as the greatest coal port in the world, fortunes and reputations were made by many who were involved in the trade of black gold.

One such individual was Claude P. Hailey, who remarkably, although energetic and influential, was extremely well liked and admired by his associates.

at Christ Church, Llandaff, that churchbeing built at the turn of the century on land that he had donated.

He was a man of obvious intellect, deep religious conviction and considerable sporting prowess, with always this concern and compassion for his fellow man: In fact, a stereotype of the late Victorian / Edwardian gentleman of means.

The residents of Llandaff North will forever be indebted to this mild mannered, quietly spoken, benevolent individual for the donation of land in 1926 that became Hailey Park, so it is vital that this area is cherished and cared for to a degree that would have made him proud. Let us hope the park will always bear his name, a constant reminder of his generosity and goodwill to a district he chose to call home. (David Clarke)

He was born on Sept. 20th 1875 and grew up at the Congregational Church in Charles Street and attended Howard Gardens School.

At the age of eighteen he entered the secretary’s office of the Taff Vale Railway Company, moving on to the Coal Freighters Association and finally the prestigious Cardiff Coal Exchange as secretary.

He married Gertrude Seward and settled in Llandaff, residing at Branscombe, The Parade, an address no doubt entirely suited to his position and status. He eventually, was to become the director of thirty companies, such was his business acumen but he was always concerned foremost with the welfare of employees and their well-being and not necessarily commercial performance and balance sheets.

As a sportsman he excelled, winning the South Wales Tennis Championship three times. Golf, cross country running and billiards also appealed so it was obvious fresh air and recreation were considered vitally important to this office bound administrator.

The Congregational Church was dominant in his private life, for as well as being a deacon, he was choirmaster and organist

LEISURELog seating

A big thank you to FOHP member and local resident Paul Davies who organised the timber for our new log seating on the meadow, facilitated by our park ranger Gareth Stamp. Thank you Paul and Gareth.

OTHER NEWS

Our Park RangerA rare species in Cardiff, Gareth is one of 4 community rangers.

From time to time he can be spotted in his preferred habitat of Hailey Park meadow, where he enjoys spending time watching birds (of the feathered variety). He is very friendly and approachable, has a sweet tooth and responds well to chocolate biscuits.

Joking aside, we work closely with Cardiff Parks’ Department and our point of contact is Gareth who leads our volunteer workdays, attends our meetings and generally helps us with all aspects of the park. His positive attitude, hard work, knowledge and love of nature are much appreciated by all at FOHP.

FOHP Patron We are honoured to have journalist, TV presenter and local residentChris Segar as our Patron.

FOHP Patron Chris Segar presents the prize of Techniquest family ticket to the winner of our logo competition, Samantha of Hawthorne Road West Primary School.
