New and exciting projects

It is a pleasure to greet you from this platform, in this issue which appears in the beginning of the summer period.

Comexi Group is very marked by the memory of its founder: this fact is being reflected in concrete projects which will help us to maintain alive his memory, as it is the case to give his name to the Packaging Technological Centre Manel Xifra Boada, stated in the issue of this WWN of last April and in other initiatives, as the publication of a book about the development of our company during the more than fifty years that he was leading it and which we hope to present by the end of this year.

The recognition of his person goes beyond our organization; his business vision, as well as the values in which he firmly believed and transmitted of ethics, simplicity, professionalism and humanism. An indication of this that is kept reflected in this issue of the WWN, are the awards Manel Xifra i Boada, given annually by the Technical Engineers College in Girona and that this year are in their second edition. For his successors it is a reason of pride that this organization thought in his person when nominating this awards, and, with any doubt, an excellent way to keep the values that he passed on to us.In the past edition of the WWN, besides of the Project of the Technological Centre Manel Xifra i Boada which belongs to the strategic line of Innovation, we set out extensively another one, the Quality one; in this one, we explain how it is being focussed in Comexi do Brasil, and we also expose a brushstroke above another one of our strategic lines, the one of Internationalization, with the interview in the back page of Igor and Yang who have been incorporated recently in Comexi Group with the aim to strengthen our team in the Russian and Assian-Pacific markets respectively; they are a sign of our bet in order to improve the multiculturalism in our organization and to give better ways of communication, in their languages, with our customers of their respective areas. Our best wishes of success for these new collaborators.In the line of innovation, your will find information about the Open Hose carried out by our customer Schulz, in their facilities in Roth, Germany, about a new flexographic printing press working daily in an industrial way with EB curable inks, as culmination of the research collaboration of more than two years with Sun Chemical and ESI; also about innovation, an article about the new projects of logistics of Enviroxi. I would not like to finish these lines without wishing to the readers, at least the ones of the northern hemisphere, a nice holidays. We will keep informing you about our new projects and events in the return of the summer.

The German company turns into the first one on a global

scale in having this technology developed by Comexi. EB is

demonstrating, day by day, that has great capacities to offer to

all the flexographic printing and converting world.

Last July 4th the Schulz team opened their company doors

in an event where journalists and other professionals could

verify the good functioning and the high reliability that the

machine offers.

This new Comexi press is ready to print over several materials

such as aluminium foil, paper, PVC, PET, PA, BOPP, CPP, particularly

for food packaging like yoghourt lids and the pharmaceutical

and cosmetic industry. Since its installation, the new FW EB

has been working with these different substrates, which has

allowed to Schulz to develop different works and demonstrate

to their costumers that they have real aptitudes to offer

versatility and quality in their jobs thanks to their new and

successful acquisition.

The high quality level that the machine offers, added to costs

reduction and the higher productiveness - price relationship

compared to other technologies (as the UV) make this machine

as one of the best investments available.

Also, not only the Electron Beam technology stands out in its

configuration since the whole compendium of technological

advances introduced by Comexi in its machines has allowed

the development of a press that emphasizes for its high

capacities and production levels.

This is the first machine of many that will come. The Electron

Beam technology devotes itself as the most important

technological development in the last few years inside the flexographic printing field and Comexi, as developers of

the technology application, have all the necessary knowledge to offer this big technology to the market with all the

guarantees.

Schulz purchase the first COMEXI EB machineA great wise move. This is the way to describe the initiative of Schulz (Germany) after make a purchase of the new Comexi FW 1508 EB with real aptitudes to offer industrial production to all his customers.

The irruption of the sleeve technology designed by Comexi revolutionized the flexographic presses market more than one decade ago. But, if we are really thinking in performing our facilities, what is it necessary to manage the storage of all the sleeves of a printing workshop?

New Human Resources website

Quality boost in our Brazil plant The Comexi Group quality department carried out a visit to Brazil group facilities in the project of the deployment of our Integrated Management System.The visit allowed us to obtain several targets. First of all, to completely homogenize the Quality level of all products made, independently of where they are made (in our plant of Riudellots de la Selva (Spain) or in Brazil). Our Quality plan comprises quality rules, check list in the mechanical assembly phases, electronic starting and internal tests. Also we will carry out a continuous experiences exchange to improve our standards in a continuous way.At the same time, we exchanged the management indicators of our respective management schedules, under a benchmarking approach and to impel the continuous progress in both companies.We also state that the implantation of the Quality system based on the norm ISO9001:2000 progress on a good rhythm and we’ve fixed as a target that Comexi Brazil will obtain its Quality certification during the next March of 2008.Besides it will be kept on advancing through the implantation of an Integrated Management System and we believe that we will be prepared to certify it at the end of 2008 in the areas of Environment (IS014001:2004) and Safety and Health (OHSAS18001:1999).Comexi Group is working to obtain the Integrated Management System certification in all its operative units before the end of 2008 within the limits of Quality, Environment, Safety and Health and Innovation.Therefore our congratulations to Comexi do Brazil and we encourage to keep working hard to obtain the ambitious targets that we have proposed to ourselves.

A professional fairNorth Americans create trends. Rosemont (Chicago, Illinois) has been the meeting point inside the sector of machinery and services for the 2007 flexible packaging inside the North American market. A fair aimed only to professionals, where we could show the successful laminator NEXUS EVO, as well as receive our clients in a spacious group stand. This way, Comexi Group was represented both with the stand and with a machine in the technological demonstration center.Four intense days in which the professionals of the sector could improve their knowledge about Comexi Group and Acom.See you in 2009!

The gearless comes to the Latin-American market. Comexi Group, as usual leading the new trends, was the first company showing the gearless concept in the past edition of Brasilpack (April 2006). Now, while several of the competitors were presenting their first gearless printing units, Comexi was already going a step forward offering the visit to the first industrial installation of a Gearless press in Brazil, located in the facilities of our customer Arco Convert, which we want to be grateful in the person of his manager, Mr. Daniel Almeida de Oliveira, for the courtesy to share the company facilities during the event. The great reception and the successfully visit raise great future expectations and fast expansion for the gearless concept in South American continent.The novelty of a machine evolved from the famous FW that will be made entirely in Brazil was the big news of the stand, which provoked numerous interests among the potentials and currently customers. Again, it was a meeting point between the employees of Comexi Brazil, Comexi Group Area Managers and the agents of the whole South America.Congratulations to all for this great success!

The Chinese flexo sector is relatively small when compared to rotogravure which holds the majority of the flexible packaging market. British Polythene Industries have made a significant investment in advancing flexo with the installation of a Comexi 8 colour FW press. The machine is complemented by new Dupont plate making equipment, plate mounting and automatic ink dispensing, all significant advancements in an emerging market. BPI’s choice of Comexi came as a result of a long and successful relationship between the two companies. The inauguration of the third phase of the Xinhui plant was attended by several senior directors of BPI including

Mr Cameron McLatchie, BPI’s founder and chairman. Also in attendance on Comexi’s behalf was Manel Xifra. The event was also attended by a host of local dignitaries and suppliers from as far a field as Australia and the UK which reinforced the significance of BPI’s investment. With much scope for expansion, Comexi wish BPI Xinhui continued success.

British Polythene Industries choose Comexi as a partner in their major investment in China. After obtaining an invoicing record in 2006, Comexi maintains a

great sales statistics during the second trimester of the present year.Comexi has managed to present numerous projects for the development and installation of flexographic presses, fact that has allowed the company to demonstrate the functionalities and the technological capacity of all its machines.In this way, different companies of our converting sector have decided to delivery their confidence in our company. This is the case of Bolfor (Spain), who has acquired a FI 2108 press, Fatra (Czech Republic) that has purchased a FW 1508 or Clondalkin Group (Holland) who has opted for acquiring a FI 3010.These are only some of the sales that Comexi has made during the trimester and they are some of the examples of success of all our versions of our FW and FI presses. At Comexi Group level, Proslit, N e x u s C o m e x i and Enviroxi are also very satisfied with the sales acquired and they are confident of supporting the big growth that they have been e x p e r i m e n t e d during the last years.Comexi Group enjoys a very good health and we are sure that this fact will motivate us to continue improving all our activities and developments.

Britton Group is divided into three main areas of production – Extrusion, Printing and Lamination and Conversion. Investment in the latest equipment technology is on-going and for over ten years, the Britton Group has enjoyed an excellent working relationship with the Comexi

Britton Group delighted with performance of COMPACK2 Slittere

Most recently included in the plant supplied from Comexi is a new generation slitter rewinder, the COMPACK2, from PROSLIT – Comexi Group’s slitter rewinder manufacturer.The COMPACK2 was installed in early December last year and is the first PROSLIT slitter rewinder to be purchased by the Britton Group. “We had decided to move away from our previous slitter supplier”, says Bob Jenkins, Site Engineering Manager at Louth, “but before that decision was taken, we conducted trials at PROSLIT’s manufacturing plant on a COMPACK2 with our own material. The performance criteria we laid down was fulfilled, but we also took into consideration the price of the machine, its delivery and our on-going relationship with Comexi”.The machine was duly installed and commissioned and since then, performance has been exemplary. “This one slitter rewinder completely outperforms our existing machines”, says Mr. Jenkins. In developing the COMPACK2, PROSLIT wanted to offer a performance equivalent to many larger machines that are currently on the market. So through compact design and attention to detail, the machine has been developed with no compromise on slitting and rewinding technology and some interesting additional features.Foremost among these is PROSLIT’s patented Advanced Linear Tracking System (ALTS) which allows high accuracy levels on the final output reel tensions. The system is fully automatic, with both lay-on rollers moving horizontally across the web through a double guided system

installed on the frame. In practice, Britton Merlin has found the system really works well. “The ability of the COMPACK2 to maintain a constant, even tension in our materials is far superior to any of our existing machines”, says Mr. Jenkins. To help achieve high productivity rates, PROSLIT has integrated several design solutions into the machine. The new fixed height unwind accepts up to 1000kg in weight, 1000mm in diameter and with an 850 - 1650mm width. PROSLIT can supply a trolley if the reel is being loaded from pallets, a pallet truck, overhead crane or similar. The shaft-less configuration

adapts to the parent reel width and the design allows reel integration into the machine. The compact design also permits good access to the slit area and simultaneous slit methods (razor and shear slit). The rewind core set-ups with the laser adjustment and friction shafts with directional ball bearing rings along the shaft all contribute to the operator being able to mount the cores faster and in an accurate position. “This in particular”, says Mr. Jenkins, “has really made a difference in reducing downtime and reel changing”. Brief specifications of the new PROSLIT COMPACK2 include web widths of 850/1350/1650mm, maximum unwind roll diameter of 1000mm, rewind roll diameter of 610mm and a minimum slit width of 40mm, with 25mm available by request. The machine is also available in an electric only category, allowing use in aseptic environments – in particular the food and pharmaceutical industries.

New challenges for Comexi Group and MetecorDuring 2007, COMEXI GROUP has started a strategy renewed process of growing with the objective of consolidate as one of the worldwide leaders in our specialities.

“Consumers are fond of all the functionality and attractive packaging and they are well-disposed to pay more for them”. This is the main conclusion of a market research made by IRI institute in Germany. This study it’s focused in the importance of the packaging in the entire consumer buying decision process.

Colour attraction

Among the product attributes scale, packaging is the seventh more appreciated item. After flavour, familiarity/recommendation, product characteristics, price, quality and special offer, packaging appearance is one of the most important characteristics in the purchasing decision.

Hygiene, impermeability and the possibility to close the pack after its first opening are decisive factors in the purchase decision. Also it’s important that our pack doesn’t poses problems with its reutilization and recycling, its composition can’t affect anytime the product flavour and its environmental impact must be scarce.

The study indicates that the sensory elements, as sight, influence enormously in the consumer final decision. Thanks to the automatic pressure control system incorporated in the FI models or the heptacromy

colour possibilities of the FW model, we can get optimum results that will give a differentiation fact to our product in front of all others coming from our competence.

The research asserts that the 34.1% of polled people prefer all the packing that are grateful to see in front of the packing with a solid design. Among the persons that believed that the sensory elements were important, the 60% are disposed to pay up to 10% more for the products provided with a good packaging.

MORE THAN 60% OF THE CONSUMERS WHO TAKE IN CONSIDERATION THE PACKING WILL BE DISPOSED TO PAY MORE FOR THE PRODUCT.

Manel Xifra Boada Awards 2007 Manel Xifra Boada awards, co-organized by Comexi Group and the University College

of Industrial Technical Engineers of Girona, reached its second edition and last 1st of

June, the Catalonia’s government representative, Josep Huguet, named the winners

of the three prize categories.

These annual prizes award the best professionals of the sector in three scopes: the

best professional trajectory, the technical and technological knowledge transfer and

the prize to the best final year projects of the Girona Polytechnic School.

The prize to the best trajectory has gone to Gabriel Ferraté, the current president

of Caixa de Tarragona. By his side, the award to the technical and technological

knowledge transfer goes to Joaquim Lleal, Dytsa company founder; and finally, the

students Rubén Rodenas, Clara Puig and Núria Barón were recognized with the

Manel Xifra Boada prize for the quality of their university final year projects.

Igor Almeida and Yang Su are the latest incorporations to our commercial team. Igor is a 32 year old graduated in international economy and he is natural from Quito (Equator). He’s fond of outdoor activities and arrive to Comexi as the new Area Manager for Russia and east European countries.Yang Su is 28 year old and has a degree in Electronic Engineering and a postgraduate in telecommunications. Nowadays is living in Spain and he is very interested in photography and billiards.Come to discover and know more about the two new incorporations of Comexi Group:

1. Which are the motivations to join us in Comexi Group?I.A.: Comexi is a leader company that is ready to face the changes in a globalized world, to interact on a

dynamic market and to advance in innovation, competition and both qualitative and quantitative growth to reach the maximum exigency levels in technological and managerial management.

Y.S.: Contributing with my experience and my knowledge, my principal motivation is to be able to take the responsibility in a big area of business and, at the same time, in its big accounts.

2. Which are the principal characteristics of your markets?I.A.: East European emergent economies tend to be treated as markets with high potential and high growing levels but with strong fluctuations and less foreseeable.

They are relatively new markets that support a high dynamism grade depending on the sector, participants are constantly appearing and disappearing on the market and the businessmen change of sector with facility searching for new possibilities.These advantages are perceived by foreign companies, which are attracted by the potential and perspectives. They try to interfere actively on the market, provoking that the level of competitiveness rises at very high levels. We might think that these markets should be settle and becoming less dynamic with the time. On the other hand, the traces of a centralized and bureaucratic economy obstruct an agile commercial management.

Y.S.: Asia is a market with great opportunities, big challenges and numerous difficulties. On one hand, it is a high capacity market that is constantly opened to

all the technological advances. On the other hand, it is a very special market, very different respect other Comexi principal markets and nowadays it is a market that is dominated by other technologies as rotogravure and solvent adhesives.

3. Which are your challenges for the future? I.A.: I believe that the principal target for the commercial department would be to create a name, an “image” that transmits reliability and professionalism. This will allow to introduce us definitively on the market to make a space among the competitors and to lay the foundations to became a leader.

Y.S.: With an adequate strategic plan we will try to influence and change the market concept and promote all the Comexi technologies (principally Solventless and Flexo) inside the Asia Pacific market.

4. What would you emphasize about Comexi Group? I.A.: Undoubtedly the more outstanding is the fervent desire to improve day by day. The intentions of growing, the adaptation to the market needs and the costumer approach are imperative points in the attainment of a productive and executive efficiency. The transformations that are being carried out in the company are the sample of that Comexi will afford with success the global economy pressures and that we have the technological and professional sufficiency to confront any challenge.

Y.S.: Comexi Group is a holding that is acquiring a great international recognition and it will have more opportunities and possibilities in the future.
