Reasons for Demand of Smart Energy Meters and Prepaid Energy Meters

--- MoP Approved Smart Grid Pilots

Number of smart cities and SEZs as suggested by the government

Number of new apartments - Housing Projects such as Godrej Garden City and Tata Housing

Power theft and Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Losses Average total power loss in India 30%

IT Parks, Finance and Tec Cities, Planned Cities, Industrial areas. Example GIFT City

Development of Smart Grid by Indian Smart Grid Task Force (ISGTF)

Assumptions

Current Scenario

Keeping in mind the above factors we have made the following assumptions

Due to power theft and T&D losses

30% power loss, theft and transmission and distribution.

The per capita average annual domestic electricity consumption in India in 2009 was 288 kWh in urban areas

Total population : 1.252 billion, Urban population, 30% : 0.24 billion (239616613)

Average family size = 4, total meters required = 5,99,04,153

Initial demand: 1%, annual growth rate: 11% (in China, its 17%) so in 2018, demand will be around 819267 due to power theft and loss

In a bid to curb power theft, Pashchimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigan Ltd. (Meerut, Morbid, Ghaziabad and Saharanpur) is to introduce pre-paid energy meters. (Dec 2014). 15,500 single-phase pre-paid meters; 18,500 three-phase meters already purchased

Lucknow Electricity Supply Administration - 5000 prepaid meters initially. Consumers are also given a rebate of Rs. 1.25 per unit and they wont have to queue up at billing counters

35% of consumers in India pay bills online to avoid standing in queues and almost as many wish to control the amount of energy consumed by them

A single phase energy meter is good for a single household which averages about 100 sq ft. Thus all our calculations are based on the assumption that one energy meter would be needed per 100 sq feet of area. The numbers may vary for commercial spaces where a three phase meter may be used

The Indian Smart Grid Forum has recently announced pilot projects in 14 cities

They have also mentioned the number of consumers, both residential and commercial in each of these projects

One of the major tasks undertaken by them is the installation of Smart Energy Meters

They have also instated a Smart Meter Task Force for the same

Smart Cities

New Apartments

Office Spaces

Smart Grid

The report by KPMG also shows the expected growth in space required in the Office sector, Retail and Industrial sector

30 million square feet by 2018 in Office space An increase can also be witnessed because of the banking licenses by RBI

150 million square feet of Retail space by 2018

450 million square feet space due to Industrial growth mainly due to the growth in Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC)

Smart meters are an integral part of any Smart City; The Incumbent government has proposed a total of 100 smart cities in India out of which 7 would be built by 2018

Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) is one of the first Smart cities, Kochi Smart city and Wave city are other examples currently in development

By our estimates a total of 480000 Smart meters would be needed in 4 buildings of GIFT city itself, and over 800000 Smart Meters in Wave City; The average of these 7 cities come out to be 400000 meters

A report by KPMG suggests that houses built for Middle Income Groups will increase by 6.86 million square feet by 2018

The same report suggests luxury apartments and houses are to grow by approx 10 million square feet

Housing projects such as Godrej Garden city and Tata Housing (3 lakh units by 2018) are increasingly installing smart meters by default
