Postal department: Drasticmakeover is imperative

The postal department urgently requiressome drastic makeover. While certainchanges have been introduced and facili-ties have been upgraded, yet a lot moreneeds to be done. India’s postal networkis one of the largest in the world. The his-tory of modern postal system in India canbe traced back to 1937, when postal ser-vices were thrown open to public with themain aim of binding the country and itspeople together. Since then, the nationhas come a long way with new technolo-gies, infrastructures and innovations in-troduced in many sectors of the econo-my. But unfortunately, the postal depart-ment failed to move with the same paceas the other departments, like telecom-munications for instance.Government for quite some time hadbeen acting with apathy and complacencytowards this sector. With private agen-cies making inroads and competition be-coming stiff, this sector lagged even fur-ther behind. Lack of facilities, poor work-ing conditions and inadequate staff, madematters still worse. Unlike other sectors, the postal staff till date is not only poorlyequipped to meet the ever- increasingdemand, but is also poorly paid. Most ofthe postmen, for instance, are survivingin poor clumsy tenements. In the absenceof adequate travel grants, which has notbeen revised for years, they have totrudge long distance with load- ladenbags, to deliver letters. While in every budget, the governmentpromptly hikes the prices of postal sta-tioneries, very little attention is directedtowards increasing either the quality ofthe postal services or improving the ser-vice conditions of the postal employees.Even the postal network, which needs tobe widened further to cater to the ever-increasing demand, does not get adequateattention. For instance, especially in NaviMumbai, there are inadequate post box-es and people have to cover a long dis-tance to find one.It is a general principle that whenever asystem gets overloaded due to escalationin demand, it becomes inadequate in qual-ity as well as in quantity of service. Theexisting system then either needs to beexpanded or efficiency has to be in-creased by introducing new and moderntechnologies. This phenomenon holdsgood even for the postal network of In-dia. To be able to make this sector com-pete with the private agencies, which areincreasingly becoming popular due totheir prompt deliveries and cordial ser-vices, it is essential to introduce newtechnologies, innovations and modernfacilities in this vital network.

Sanskrit- A learning curve for knowing other languages

By C. K. Subramaniam

Though the prima-ry role of Sanskrithymns of Veda washealing and maintain-ing harmony with na-ture, it also served asan infinite source of the-oretical and practicalknowledge. Various sys-tems of knowledgecame about accordingto the need of the timeand the comprehensionability of the people insociety. Many peoplemay be under the im-pression that learningSanskrit is very diffi-cult. This is mainly dueto the fact that it hasnot been taught proper-ly and that has some-thing to do with thewrong notion that it isnot a spoken language. In my opinion and ex-perience learning San-skrit will not have dif-ficulty and on the con-trary it can be easy andfun. Of course somepeople may find it diffi-cult to learn any otherlanguage other thantheir mother tongue. Itall depends on variousfactors like individuallearning ability, age

etc.If we put individual

learning capacity aside,we can say for sure thatanyone who can learnany other language canlearn Sanskrit, andthat learning Sanskritdoes not have to be moredifficult than learningany other language -provided that we learnSanskrit in a naturalway that allows us toassimilate the live flowof the language. San-skrit is a very ancientlanguage, but it is notdead. It is very much upto date and alive. San-skrit can be spoken andused in daily life and itcan be learned in a live-ly and enjoyable way.The study of Sanskritmay become difficult ifthe learning process isbased only on under-standing and remem-bering dry grammarrules and their applica-tion in translation ex-ercises - what we cancall “grammar-transla-tion-method”. This kindof method marked itdifficult to learn anylanguage, and it is be-coming less and less

popular all over theworld.

If, on the otherhand, the learning pro-cess is built on exposureto the live flow of thelanguage, and if theassimilated languagebecomes the basis andthe criteria for learningthe relevant aspects ofgrammar - then learn-ing Sanskrit can be-come easy and fun. There should not beany misunderstanding. We do not mean to saythat learning grammaris not important. Onthe contrary, grammaris very important, butit should be given incorrect doses at theright time and in prop-er manner. The mostimportant point is thatthe growing ability tohandle the live flow oflanguage should be thebasis of learning gram-mar and not the otherway around.

As it is already men-tioned that this is notonly true with regard toSanskrit, it is true forevery language. Themost successful sys-tems of learning lan-

guages in the world to-day are based on suchideas because experi-ence showed that lan-guage should belearned in a naturalway - by repeated expo-sure to the live flow ofthe language in all pos-sible ways: listening, speaking, reading andwriting. If we stop tothink about it - how didwe learn our mothertongue? Did we start byunderstanding andmemorizing grammarrules? Were we givenlong lists of vocabular-ies to memorize? Didanyone ever explain usthe concept of verbalroots and the process ofwords derivations?

Obviously not, wesimply heard the lan-guage and then wetried to speak. We lis-tened and we repeated.Sometimes we werecorrected but manytimes we corrected our-selves, and when did webegin to study gram-mar? When we alreadymastered the languageto quite a high degree. So all we have to do inorder to make Sanskrit

learning easy and funis to adjust our ap-proach by paying atten-tion to the natural wayour mind learns newthings. Various aspectsof learning should beemphasized and givenpriority in the propertime and correct man-ner.

A lot of the abovementioned literaturehas been translatedinto English and otherlanguages. It is a com-mon knowledgethough, that no trans-lation can be perfect. InSanskrit this truth iseven more valid as therichness and depth ofthe Sanskrit languagedo not allow any otherlanguage to capture thefull depth of its mean-ing. We therefore rec-ommend anyone whofeels inspired by thescope and richness ofSanskrit literature, tolearn Sanskrit andread the scriptures inthe original language -Or at least learn a lit-tle, just enough to readand to deal with anyquestions or doubtsthat may come up re-

garding the validity ofa certain translation,or the meaning of cer-tain expressions.

Education helps toearn a live and also togain knowledge. Be-sides your normalstudies, spare sometime for spiritual prac-tises like Dhyanam,Japam etc. And learn-ing Sanskrit is a thrill-ing experience. San-skrit spoken in someparts of India most inKerala. Near Thiru-vananthapuram in onevillage the people therespeak in Sanskrit.Again, the notice boardin hotels carry today’sspecial in Sanskrit.Again, competitionsare held in Sanskrit inKerala and Sanskritnews broadcast isthere in Door Darshan. In South Indianschools in Mumbai, thestudents can preferSanskrit as the thirdlanguage and have thelearning experience ofthe age old language.Sanskrit is indeed alearning curve forknowing other lan-guages.

It is a matter ofgreat honour towelcome a foreigndignitary and thattoo of the caliber ofPresident DonaldTrump. We treat thisas a pride to extendred carpet welcome ina gala manner.

We respect theforeign dignitariescoming to India andit is happening forcenturies. However,we take lot of objec-tions for the Trump’svisit. Unlike withChina in the year1962, India-USrelations are notstrained and pro-gressing well. As adeveloping country,US pays respect to adeveloping countrylike India. Why thenwe face such a stiffopposition withindespite having afairly healthy rela-tionship with US.This was reflected in

Namaste Trump

the best way byTrump and it is timeto reciprocate thesentiments ratherthan showing blackflags.

With massivedecorations andelaborate securityarrangements,Ahmedabad gave arousing reception in aNamaste Trump for a

mega event. Similarto Prime MinisterNarendra Modi’sHowdy Modi! rallythat was held in NewHampshire last year.Mr. Trump took partin ‘Namaste Trump’event at the newly-constructed cricketstadium in Ahmeda-bad. From resurfac-ing roads and plant-

ing palm trees alongthe streets to build-ing a wall apparentlyto hide slums, theGujarat governmentmade an elaboratearrangement.

This is the firsttime any U.S. Presi-dent did connect withthe Indian people atlarge, an acknowl-edgement of the

important space thatpeople-to-people tieshave played. Whilethis is the first suchpublic rally inAhmedabad, USPresident DwightEisenhower didaddress a joint rallywith PM JawaharlalNehru at Delhi’sRamlila Grounds in1959, which anestimated crowd of 5lakh people hadattended.

Both sides areexpected to fast trackthe Basic Exchangeand CooperationAgreement (BECA),to be discussedduring defence talksin March. Oncesealed, BECA, thethird logistic agree-ment between themilitaries, willensure smooth flow ofhigh end technologyfrom the U.S. toIndia.

Apart from thestrategic and mili-

tary aspect, bothsides are expected totake up trade rela-tionship especiallysince PresidentTrump himself hasannounced that hewill seal a big tradedeal with India laterthis year. There areIndian concernsabout the agricultureand dairy sectors insuch a scenario thatare yet to be clarifiedby the officials.

In Gujarat peoplefrom all languagesspoke excitedly aboutthe Trump visit, drawing a parallelbetween PrimeMinister NarendraModi’s ‘Make inIndia’ and Mr.Trump’s ‘MakeAmerica Great Again’slogans. The visit isaimed at showcasingIndia’s rich diversity.

Team India’s battingturns turtle

The much hyped Indian batting turned into aturmoil in the first test at Wellington. After losing3 ODI games on the trot, it was much expectedfrom the Indian side to maintain their number one status. But the bat-ting came cropper, as Kiwi skipper put Indian team into bat on a cloudycondition. None of the batsmen fared well and the procession of wicketswas a pathetic sight.

Openers were just trying to catch the next flight to India, middle ordercaved in and the tail did not wag. We need proper training methods beforeembarking on an overseas tour. But we take things lightly and there ischopping and changing of the side as per the whims and fancies of theskipper and that made it difficult to have a settled batting order.

Bowling side is not penetrative and we cry foul when the wickets didnot help our bowlers. Fortunately, on the first day rains came and avoid-ed the disaster. Thus, Team India's batting turned turtle and we need tohave sound opening batsmen, dependable middle order and a set five bestbowlers to back the side on an overseas tour.

This is for the firsttime in the history ofGujarat that a sittingUS President will bevisiting here. InAhmedabad, DonaldTrump will address the'Namaste Trump' eventjointly with PM Modiat the newly built Mot-era cricket stadiumbilled to be the world’slargest cricket stadiumwith over 1-lakh spec-tator capacity. Beingbuilt at an estimatedcost of $100 million, theMotera Stadium will bethe world's largestcricket stadium over-taking the MelbourneCricket Ground in Aus-tralia. They will partic-ipate in a roadshowthemed 'Unity in Diver-sity' to the stadiumwhere 'NamasteTrump' event is beingorganised. Around onelakh people from acrossGujarat have been in-vited to welcomethem. More than100,000 partici-pants have regis-tered so far to greetTrump as he headsfrom the airport tothe city centre.

This event issimilar to the land-mark 'Howdy,Modi!' (Here“Howdy” meansKem cho” in Guja-rati) event hostedby the Indian-American communityin honour of PrimeMinister Modi duringhis visit to Houston inSeptember 2019, inwhich PresidentTrump participated.Around 28 stages rep-resenting the variousparts of the country arebeing set up along theroute, in what is beingcalled the India RoadShow and the route willalso feature decorationsdepicting differentevents in the life of Gan-dhiji, whose associationwith the city is so well-known. It is said thatthe defence deal is like-ly to be the highlight ofthe visit given that alimited trade deal thetwo sides were lookingto clinch is not expect-

ed to happen.Donald Trump looks

at this as a political op-portunity to garnersupport from the Indi-an-Americans backhome. One must re-member PresidentTrump who stated inhis speech, after PMModi welcomed him tospeak, calling him "my

friend, a friend of India, the great AmericanPresident DonaldTrump", also appealedto the four-millionstrong Indian Americancommunity to vote forhim, saying he was thebest US president forstrengthening India-US ties. An importantconstituency ofTrump’s voters hasbeen Hindu non-resi-dent Indians, whomade large donationsand came out in strongsupport during the2016 US presidentialelection. Similarly, theNRI vote is crucial, andof that pie, Gujaratishave a large share in it.

Trump's visit will bebrief but intense, withall essential elements of

a State visit, and twoadditional legs inAhmedabad and Agra, all squeezed into lessthan 36 hours. There isno doubt that the rela-tions between India andthe US are strongerthan ever before. Thevisit of Donald Trumpwill more be groundedin our common values

and our sharedcommitment todemocracy whenour PM Modi'sleadership in theworld is being wit-nessed as astrong, drivingand thriving re-public of India. Both India andthe US also un-derstand that tokeep our commu-nities safe wemust protect our

borders.In preparation of

Trump's visit, Gujaratgovernment and theAhmedabad adminis-tration have stepped upthe renovation and thebeautification processin the city. The leadersof China, Japan and Is-rael have all visitedAhmedabad since Modibecame prime minister.Ahmedabad is the big-gest city in Gujarat, the western state whereModi has made hismark as chief ministerbefore his Hindu na-tionalist party swept topower in 2014. It is alsoreported that Modi andTrump will have lots todialogue and debateabout.

Why hide poverty from Trump? Is there any country without poor people and poverty, then why was a

wall constructed overnight to block them and hide their existence justbecause President Trump is visiting Ahmedabad.

The Government of Gujarat could have spent that amount on provid-ing clothes and food to those poor instead. Would the poor also not havebeen included in this celebration? Over a hundred crore has been spent(including the construction of the wall around the juggis) for a three hourvisiAt of US President and the first lady, what a waste.

Is Prime Minister Modi ashamed of displaying our poor to the outsideworld (which anyways isn’t hidden in this age of technology) or is it somesense of guilt for not doing enough for them.

The primaryobjective of thisinitiative was toeducate and collabo-rate with fellowpractitioners andexperts. Based onregistry statistics,Mumbai alone hasmore than 2000patients that have thisaggressive form ofdisease, where stan-dard treatmentmodalities give poorresults. The idea is tocreate awareness ofthe medical fraternity,to help in earlydiagnosis so thatpatients could bereferred to a highvolume centre forbetter treatment.

Reflect-ing values of environ-mental consciousnessthrough a variety ofmemorable perfor-mances, against thebackdrop of pertinentyet aestheticallyappealing slides andexquisite props, theevent was a visualtreat that left anindelible mark on theminds of the parents. When toddlers asyoung as two, dressedin painstakinglycreated costumes, remind us of ourresponsibility to-wards our planetthrough music, danceand drama, theimpact is definitelybound to be powerfuland effective.

From the need tostop cutting and startplanting trees, to theimportance of cleanli-ness, to the under-standing that water

Chief Guest of theevent, Dr. MonicaKhanna, author, academician andtrainer, urgedparents not topressurize theirchildren and allowthem to enjoy theirchildhood, whilesimultaneouslyinculcating the rightvalues that wouldenable them tobecome good humanbeings. Guest ofHonour Mr. BhaveshShah, Director,Today Global, statedthat just like build-ings, pre-schools arethe foundation stonesthat play an integralpart in the develop-ment of a child, and

therefore extremelyimportant for thechild’s growth.

The schools havebeen striving toteach children skillsand concepts throughinnovative teachingmethods, and havebeen focusing on theholistic developmentof the children byincluding activitiessuch as yoga, fitness, music and dance.Being socially re-sponsible, they arealso a part of DaanUtsav, a platformthat brings togetherpeople from all walksof life and encourag-es them to celebrate‘giving’ in all forms,be it time, money, skill or love.

It is indeedcommendable andheartening that pre-schools today areindoctrinating andinstilling ideas thatgo beyond race, caste, religion andnationality – and areconcentrating in-stead on humanityand love.
