5July 2010 Congratulations CF StudentsCongratulations CF StudentsPoetry recitation

Poetry is a powerful part of the second-grade curriculum at Harshaw. In the spring, students spent a lot of their classroom time reading, writing and reciting poetry.

Th e students recited a chosen poem from their favorite author in front of judges Kathleen Keir, Chris Gill and Nicole Knapp. Of the 114 students, two winners were chosen from each classroom.

Of those classroom winners, two students with the highest scores were chosen to recite their poems at the 20th Annual Eleanor Henricks Children’s Poetry Recitation at Binghamton High School. Special congratulations go to Matthew Kubisa in Jessica Olsen’s classroom for his recitation of “Noisy, Noisy” by Jack Prelutsky, and Morgan Ferguson in Christina Germano’s classroom for her recitation of “Sometimes I Wonder” by Laura Numeroff .

Students also created original pieces. Special congratulations to Sydney Fendick for her poem “Teeth,” Corey Tye’s “Cry, Cry, Cry,” “Froggies” by Austin Woodruff , and “War” by Gavin Secoolish. Th ese students recited their original pieces on May 19 at the 33rd Annual Binghamton University’s Poetry and Children’s Day with students from other districts.

We want to acknowledge all the hard work of the students, parents and teachers. As Walt Whitman stated, “To have great poets, there must be great audiences, too.”

Middle School poetry

In May, Binghamton University hosted the 33rd Annual Poetry and the Children’s Day where hundreds of student poets from area schools participated.

Chenango Forks Middle School sent 12 students who enjoyed listening to a published poet, reciting their own poem to an audience and then eating a picnic lunch while on the campus. We are proud of our eloquent writers.

9July 2010 High SchoolHigh SchoolIt was a fun time at the After-Prom Party

On Saturday, May 15, just after midnight, 282 Chenango Forks juniors, seniors and their guests, converged on the high school to enjoy After-Prom Party 2010.

The “Shanghai Nights”party was the culmination of months of planning and fundraising by the APP committee comprised of parent volunteers of junior and senior students.

The students were treated to delicious refreshments served in the cafeteria, which was adorned with colorful Chinese dragons, fans, lanterns, betta fish bowls and twinkling lights. A caricaturist, inflatable activity areas, cash box, photo booth, henna tattoos, a variety of games and an entertaining hypnotist show

provided ample opportunity for student fun and participation. During a Chinese

auction giveaway, over 100 prizes were distributed, and following

the hypnotist s h o w, o v e r $9,000 worth of large prizes in the form of cash and gifts were raffled off.

E a c h y e a r , APP provides a safe and fun environment for the students to continue their prom experience. This year, the APP committee extended its student outreach and will award several $250 scholarships to graduating seniors who attended the entire party and best exhibited their efforts to make healthy life choices through an application process.

Many thanks to those who made this year’s party a great success: the tireless committee volunteers, the Chenango Forks administration, staff and teachers, the CF sophomore class, Deb Daniels’ foods classes, Trooper Cody and our very generous community.

July 201014 District/HarshawDistrict/Harshaw

For many years the district has been fortunate to have a school resource officer present in our schools as part of the New York State Police School Resource Officer

Program. New York State Police Field Commander Colonel John P. Melville said, “The mission priorities of the New York State Police are to prevent crime and enforce the law, ensure highway safety, to render general assistance and to promote peace and order within our communities. Over the years, the Division of State Police has been able to expand its mission, beyond our traditional role. These additional

programs include the School Resource Officer Program and are often staffed with grant-funded positions or due to an increase of authorized state police strength by the Legislature.”

As the fiscal climate in New York has deteriorated, staffing many

of these additional programs, however critical, has become nearly impossible. In light of decreased funding, the hiring of new recruit troopers will not be possible in the foreseeable future.

Because of declines in funding and resources, upon conclusion of the 2009-2010 school year, the Division of State Police will no longer be able to dedicate a trooper to serve as a school resource officer in our district. This is not a decision taken lightly by the state police, but it is one which will allow for the redeployment of troopers statewide in order to continue to perform their core missions.

Trooper Christopher Cody has been a fixture in the Chenango Forks School District for the past five years. His presence has made the campus safer. He was approachable and formed numerous friendships with students and staff. He served as a resource for many of our classrooms, conducted the DARE program and helped solve crimes in school and in the community. Most importantly, he served as a role model and demonstrated that he, along with all members of the law enforcement community, are on our side.

We all wish Trooper Cody the very best in his new assignment and hope that he will visit often.

Heartfelt thanks for a job well done

Growing fl owers and students

This spring, Theresa Collier’s kindergartners took some time out of their day to plant flowers in the “Peace Garden” between the Kenyon and Harshaw buildings.

Kay Corcoran, a retired Chenango Forks teacher, devotes many hours tending the gardens around the school. In addition, she is an active volunteer in our kindergarten. A big thank you goes out to her for helping keep both our flowers and children growing beautiful and strong.

Denz receives award

At the June 10 Board of Education (BOE) meeting, the BOE recognized Carol Denz, retiring assistant superintendent, for her dedicated years of service to Odyssey of the Mind.

She was instrumental in creating an Odyssey of the Mind coaching position in each of the district’s four buildings and also served as a coach.

The BOE invited Denz to serve as “advisor emeritus for the Chenango Forks Central Schools Odyssey of the Mind program in perpetuity.” We look forward to seeing her as part of the Odyssey of the Mind program in our district.

15July 2010 HarshawHarshawKindergartners get in the pool

Each year, kindergartners in Chenango Forks get to go swimming. As part of the

physical education curriculum, kindergartners travel to the High School pool and swim with High School students. The program began

in the early 70’s after the pool was built as a way to expose young students to large pools, water and how to swim. The concept was developed by former superintendent Norman Sweeney.

New to this year’s program was the addition of a booklet entitled “My Swim Booklet.” This booklet ties swimming to literacy and was made as

a way to increase the young students’ comfort level as they prepare to get in the pool. Art teacher Keith Rosko and his students created the book, which includes drawings and text related to getting into a pool and learning to swim.

On May 28, Deputy Michael Kelly, Broome County Sheriff ’s Department, visited our morning and afternoon Pre-K classes with his German Shepherd,

Barron.

Our Pre-K classes were studying a unit on community helpers and the tools they use to work in our community. Deputy Kelly demonstrated how Barron helps him do his job. Barron performed many obedience tasks and Deputy Kelly showed the students the tools he uses to perform his job.

The students were able to pet Barron and then received a trading card with Barron’s picture. Thank you Deputy Kelly and Barron for coming to our school.

Exploring careers

In May, five Chenango Forks Middle School students participated in a career exploratory program at Cornell Cooperative Extension. The students learned what type of education they needed to become veterinarians and what career

options there are for people who are interested in working with animals.

The students watched a dissection of a cow’s heart and uterus. They learned how to do CPR on dogs and how to take their pulse. They also learned how to restrain a reptile and how to muzzle a canine. They did skull comparisons of a horse, cat, goat, sheep and calf. Everyone had a lot of fun and they said the career exploration experience was very worthwhile.

Students help recycle

The middle school special’s team has a yearly tradition of rewarding its “Students of the Month” with an ice cream sundae party. This year the event went green as

they used compostable materials.

The bowls they used were made from sugar cane material, the spoons were made from potatoes and vegetable oil, and the drinking cups were made from corn. All these products are compostable within 180 days. The spoons are reusable when washed and dried completely and then stored in a dry place.

This earth-friendly event was rewarding and delicious. -Lynette Breck, MS specials team

Going green

It’s another summer of green as Nick Hurd, Carley Church and Sydney Slottje participate in the 3rd Annual Go Green Institute at Binghamton University this month. The

program brings together approximately 50 of the Southern Tier’s brightest and most interested seventh-graders in an intensive ten-day, hands-on learning experience centered on the theme of a green living environment. The students will spend a small amount of time in the classroom, but most of their time will be spent experimenting in the lab or on field trips. Look for another article and more photos in the September 2010 edition.

Creating silhouettes

Several HS art students

had the opportunity to use their artistic knowledge to assist kindergartners in Jennifer Phillips’ class and relive some old memories at the same time. Students from the Contemporary Crafts class headed to Harshaw over the course of four days to help Phillips work on the kindergarten silhouette project.

Each year that we off er the Contemporary Crafts class, one of our more popular projects is to create a silhouette as part of the papers unit. HS students fondly remember being in kindergarten and having Phillips trace and cut their silhouette.

As upperclassmen, students are introduced to the idea of the silhouette and its traditional origins through its current popularity in advertising, spurred on by such people as Saul Bass and today’s iPod commercials. Students then create an updated silhouette; something more contemporary (a silhouette for the 21st century). You can view the silhouettes presentation on the CF website on the Art Department pages, “crafts class” link.

Creating silhouettes at CF has been a wonderful tradition for as long as I have been here. It is one of the many things we do that parents seem to be particularly fond of. I have been told about one house where the parents own kindergarten silhouettes hang side by side with their children’s silhouettes.

A trip to Latin America

Students from Mandy Black’s Spanish V classes recently took the entire fifth grade on a tour of Latin America. Fifth-grade students travelled between classrooms to attend presentations about Spain, Mexico, Ecuador, Chile, Costa Rica and Panama. The High school students

shared Power Point presentations, artifacts from their travels, beverages, traditional games and even dance steps from the countries they presented. Students learned some Spanish along the way and were encouraged to study a foreign language when they get to middle and high school.

The fifth-grade students participated enthusiastically in the activities and the High School students (several of whom plan to become teachers in the future) enjoyed the chance to plan a lesson and present to the younger students.

Envirothon teams win again

They are winners again! As in previous years, Envirothon teams from Forks continue to find success. At this year’s Regional Envirothon competition in April, Forks swept

the 15 teams from Broome County, taking both first and second.

“The Nefarious Nematodes” team of Abby Ponterio, Alex Driscoll, Sharon Hartzell, Courtney Robinson and Joe Crosier placed first in the county. This is Forks’ 14th Broome County title and the tenth in a row. The Nematodes also placed second in the five-county region of 39 teams.

“The Tenacious Trilobites” team of Rebecca Ollerenshaw, Amber Bates, John Condon, Allie Maceda and Tom Raminger placed second in the county and tied for eighth in the five-county region of 39 teams. Congratulations to both teams on another successful competition!

Plants go in swamp

The work at Casey Swamp continued as High School and elementary students added the

plants they started growing in pots last fall.

In May, High School students prepared areas for planting, including starting work on a walkway. Th e funds for this part of the project were received through a grant that Forks won from Rockwell Collins. Students also removed any invasive

species, built trails and interpretive areas, and did general clean-up work.

After the prep work was completed, members of the National Aquarium in Baltimore arrived to help supervise students as they moved the plants they started last fall down to the swamp for planting. Th e High School Envirothon Team, BCC Environmental Science students, and students in other classes, including elementary students, helped with the replanting.

Over the past several years, students have been working on the Casey Swamp wetland restoration project spearheaded by the National Aquarium in Baltimore to help restore wetland plant diversity in the Susquehanna River Basin. Th e project includes building a wetland nursery, planting new plants and grasses in the wetland area, completing a walkway, and general maintenance of the area. Th e project is sponsored by the National Aquarium, the Upper Susquehanna Coalition and the Triad Foundation.

It was with regret that the Chenango Forks Board of Education (BOE) accepted the resignation of Michael Flynn, High School principal, at the June 10 meeting. The

BOE appointed John Hillis as the new High School principal at the June meeting. Hillis has begun the search for an assistant principal and will hopefully be providing a recommendation in the near future.

With great sadness and after many discussions with Mike, I have come to understand and respect his decision, realizing that it is what’s best for him and his family.

John Hillis began his career at CF in 1995 as a social studies teacher in the High School teaching AP European history, ninth- and tenth-grade global history and geography, participation in government, psychology and international terrorism.

In 2007-08, he participated in an administrative internship under the direction of Kathleen Keir and myself. During his internship, Hillis continued to be an active leader on the HS Site Council, which focused on improving student achievement and diminishing the dropout rate. Through his leadership with the Site Council, the concept of a freshman/sophomore

academy was developed and implemented.

In July 2009, Hillis was appointed HS assistant principal and distinguished himself through his work with the staff and students in the implementation of the academy. As assistant principal, he demonstrated his ability to work with students to improve their academic performance, provide guidance in their daily lives, resolve conflicts, and be a sympathetic and supportive ear. As principal, he plans to continue his work with staff and students to ensure all students walk across the graduation stage.

Stephanie’s art themes of recycling seem to be reminiscent of her winning ways as she notches another state title in

the New York Recycles Poster Contest in the 10-12 grade category. Her entry was selected from over 840 entries.

By winning first place, she, along with 11 other New York state winners, will have the honor of their artwork appearing in a calendar to be distributed throughout the state. Our school will also receive a recycled content tote bag filled with educational materials and videos.

In November, Stephanie will participate in a recognition luncheon in Cooperstown during the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling annual conference.

In another contest, Stephanie was runner-up in the Earth Fest T-shirt Design Contest. This year’s theme, “Healthy Planet, Healthy People,” was part of the entry rules. Stephanie’s ability to draw and illustrate captured the attention of judges and viewers alike. Her design was on display at “Earth Day” festivities in April, which were held at MacArthur School in Binghamton.
