How are libraries changing?

Retirements! Vacancies may not be filled.

New roles for librarians. Chains are consolidating

libraries/services. Some hospital libraries are being

eliminated/downsized due to budget cuts.

Some hospital libraries are being merged with other departments.

Key Network Programs

Membership– Educational materials– Funding for outreach projects

DOCLINE & Document Delivery– Implementing regional document delivery

plan– Contributing to DOCLINE development– Providing training and support

DOCLINE Trends

DOCLINE usage has decreased 46% since 2002; 8% in the last year

Loansome Doc usage has decreased 68% since 2002

NLM is investigating the declining trends

Currently conducting resource sharing survey with DOCLINE libraries

Outreach Programs in the NN/LM PSR

Awareness Technology Improvement

Outreach to Health Professionals

Target health professionals who lack easy access to biomedical information; such as community health and public health workers

Outreach funding awards Minority institutions (community

colleges) E-science initiatives

Consumer Health Information Services

Target public libraries, community-based organizations

Focus on those who serve minorities, senior citizens, other special populations

Questions & Discussion

Your Ideas!

How do you use social media to promote your programs and/or services?

What strategies have worked well?

MedlinePlus Connect Initiative

Kelli Ham, MLISConsumer Health and Technology Coordinator

NN/LM Pacific Southwest Region

What is MedlinePlus Connect?

Behind the scenes system that connects information in the electronic health record to information in MedlinePlus

Works for diagnoses, lab tests and medications

MedlinePlus Connect Task Force

Define audience Learn about the target community’s

needs and available resources Articulate outcomes Track and evaluate outreach efforts Identify best practices Share findings

Potential Audiences

Medical librarians RECs FQHCs HIT personnel

– Hospitals and other healthcare organizations

– Community college HIT program faculty Vendors (NLM)

Potential Barriers

Lack of awareness (even at basic MedlinePlus level)

Fear that ‘free’ equates to low quality or extra work

Vendors – no financial incentive

What have we done so far?

Defined audiences Key informant interviews Convened day-long meeting

– Consensus that toolkit would be most helpful

– Brainstormed contents of toolkit– Future meetings will continue the work

To Learn More…

What strategies…

would be most effective for MedlinePlus Connect outreach?

Kay Deeney, MLS, AHIPEducational Services CoordinatorNN/LM Pacific Southwest Region

Outreach to Community Colleges

Task Force

Facts about Community Colleges

Train everyone from EMTs to Health IT to RNs

Multi-disciplinary library staff! Library as place Faculty collaboration

NLM National Initiative for Community College Outreach

Articulate desired outcomes for outreach to community colleges, for example: – links to MedlinePlus, PubMed – training activities – partnerships with NN/LM – membership in NN/LM – links to MedlinePlus Connect

Learn about the target community’s needs and available resources

NLM Initiative, continued

Determine how outcomes will be measured, how data will be collected, and a timeline for activities

Identify and document effective practices for providing health information outreach to community college community

Communicate findings to the NN/LM community and stakeholders

What have we done with CCs so far?

Phone interviews with community college librarians and faculty

Pilot training Jan, 2012 with Shasta College, Redding, CA

What Strategies . . .

can you suggest to increase outreach for NLM resources in community colleges?

ClinicalTrials.gov Results Task Force Update

ClinicalTrials.gov

A registry and results database of publicly and privately supported clinical studies of human participants conducted around the world

142,567 studies with locations in all 50 states and in 183 countries

95 million page views per month and 60,000 unique visitors daily

ClinicalTrials.gov: Contents

Find and view clinical studies– Search for open clinical studies– Browse studies by category or location– Search for studies that include

results Learn more about clinical research Manage study records Use site tools and data

ClinicalTrials.gov website

http://clinicaltrials.gov/

ClinicalTrials.gov Results Database

Launched in September 2008 to implement Section 801 of the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 (FDAAA 801)

Results information includes– Participant flow– Baseline characteristics– Outcome measures and statistical analyses– Adverse events

8,500 studies with results

ClinicalTrials.gov Results Database: Purpose

Provide public record of basic study results in a standardized format

Promote fulfilling of ethical responsibility to participants; use of research results to contribute to medical knowledge

Mitigate "publication" and "outcome reporting" biases

Facilitate systematic reviews and other analyses of the research literature

ClinicalTrials.gov Results Task Force: Charge

1. Identify priority target populations2. Learn about target populations’ needs and available

resources3. Determine extent of existing promotional efforts4. Articulate desired outcomes5. Develop logic model to describe how outcomes will

be achieved6. Determine how outcomes will be measured, how

data will be collected, and timeline for activities7. Make recommendations to NLM about how best to

promote on a national level8. Communicate findings to NN/LM community

ClinicalTrials.gov Results Task Force: Audience and Goals

Primary: Educate health sciences librarians and researchers as to the availability of the results

Secondary: Inform health sciences librarians and researchers of the obligation to report

ClinicalTrials.gov Results Task Force: Outcomes of Training

Greater use of database Incorporation of database in other

training Increase of compliance Increase in results

ClinicalTrials.gov Results Task Force: Strategies

NN/LM– Moodle course (3.0 MLA CE, pending)– Short presentations (30-60 minutes)

NLM– Educational materials– Results Database Train-The-Trainer

Presentations

Abstract: “…Taught by an experienced medical librarian, this presentation will describe ways in which ClinicalTrials.gov can be a resource for researchers and clinicians, as well as provide a brief overview of requirements for registering and reporting results of clinical trials… In addition to submitting their own studies, researchers can find previous unreported study results, investigate research funded by particular sources and find potential collaborators on future projects.”

Discussion

What strategies should be utilized to identify and train researchers on ClincialTrials.gov Results?

K-12 Outreach Initiative

Kelli Ham, MLISConsumer Health and Technology Coordinator

NN/LM Pacific Southwest Region

K-12 Task Force

Define audience Learn about the target community’s

needs and available resources Articulate outcomes Track and evaluate outreach efforts Identify best practices Share findings

Task Force Approach

Voluntary participation by region Regional approach varies greatly

– Educators – School librarians– School nurses– Public librarians– Students

What have we done with K-12 so far?

Defined primary audience and types of outreach– Training to educators – Outreach at conferences via exhibits

In the process of creating tracking and evaluation tools

PSR’s Recent Activities

Exhibits and presentations at school nurse association conferences

In process of identifying magnet schools in California with emphasis on environmental science and medical career track curriculum

What approach…

would be effective in making connections with K-12 teachers and recruiting schools as network members?
