NNS Helps to Fund New Bistro at Riverside HospitalOn March 5, leadership from Newport News Shipbuilding and Riverside Regional Medical Center held a small ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the hospital’s newest restaurant, the Pavilion Bistro. Prior to the ribbon cutting, leaders from Riverside gave brief remarks and Bill Bell, NNS vice president of Human Resources and Administration, unveiled a plaque on behalf of NNS that will be hung in the bistro.

“Helping to fund the new Pavilion Bistro is just another way to continue and honor this partnership,” said Bell. “The shipyard has nearly 23,000 employees and Riverside is important to their quality of life. Our employees live across Hampton Roads and when they or their families need medical attention, they need to be comfortable and have a place to feel at home, have a good meal and relax and reduce anxiety. This bistro will help the entire community, and that’s really the ultimate goal.”

The plaque that Bell unveiled was handcrafted by NNS shipbuilders in the Sheet Metal Shop. It depicts an aircraft carrier and a submarine. The frame around the plaque and the spear and gear on the plaque were created from steel used in the construction of Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).

Electric Boat Lays the Keel for Colorado General Dynamics Electric Boat held a keel laying ceremony for the 15th Virginia-class attack submarine Colorado (SSN 788) Saturday, March 7 in Groton, Connecticut. Annie Mabus, daughter of Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, is the ship’s sponsor.

Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin was one of the speakers during the ceremony. He said the submarine will hold special significance for the 200 employees who live and work in Colorado as part of the Stoller Newport News Nuclear (SN3) subsidiary.

Biggest Race: I’ve run the NNS 5K every year; this will be my first 8K.

Biggest Challenge: Patience. I tried running years ago and I wanted to run distances that my body wasn’t ready for and suffered nagging injuries.

Running Goal: Physical fitness and better health. I want to run a marathon one day.

Favorite Areas to Run: Noland Trail and Oak Grove Lake Park Trail.

Favorite Tech: iPod loaded with my favorite playlists and I also like using my sports watch to time my laps.

Running Playlist: Parliament Funkadelic, Supertramp, Prince, Chicago, Various Hip Hop artists. I used to be a radio disc jockey and my musical tastes vary from classic rock and roll to hip-hop.

Work Application: Running helps me focus better at work. I feel like I have more energy as well. Critical thinking is a major part of my job and I feel running helps me to perform my duties at a higher level.

Motivation: I love logging the time and the distance. I track every run and compare times to see how I’m progressing.

Company Involvement: Successful companies are actively involved in the development of their workforce. NNS’ involvement with HealthWaves and sponsoring different exercise programs shows they are committed to the employees. I think people feel better about their jobs when they know they are appreciated by their employers.

Advice: I would say the first thing is to consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. Second, I would start out at a pace that is good for you.

Newport News Shipbuilding celebrated National Engineers Week by hosting the Peninsula Engineers Council’s (PEC) 45th annual banquet on Feb. 28. NNS President Matt Mulherin served as the featured speaker and Suzanne Beckstoffer, engineering director of Process and Tools, was named the Virginia Peninsula Engineer of the Year.

“I’ve known I wanted to be an engineer since age 15, when my high school math teacher took me to N.C. State for an engineering careers seminar,” Beckstoffer said. “Solving technical challenges and helping build the world’s most complex ships has been a rewarding career. After more than 30 years at Newport News, I’m proud to be a shipbuilder!”

Beckstoffer was nominated for the award by the Hampton Roads section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME).

Beckstoffer Named Virginia Peninsula Engineer of the Year

“Among the four highly qualified candidates nominated this year for the Peninsula Engineer of the Year Award, Ms. Beckstoffer’s exceptional record of leadership, technical accomplishments, contributions to the profession and contributions to the community stood out above the nominees,” said PEC President Gary Fuller.

National Engineers Week was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951, dedicated to raising awareness of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning, careers in engineering and the positive contributions brought on by engineers. The week begins on Feb. 22, the birth date of George Washington who is considered the nation’s first engineer.

Due to the inclement weather, the Feb. 25-26 Engineering Career Day events were cancelled and will be rescheduled.

Virginia-class submarine (VCS) shipbuilder Larry Malone (X43) was featured on the front cover of the January/February 2015 edition of Yardlines. Huntington Ingalls Industries has been awarded a $23M modification to a previously awarded contract to continue construction preparation efforts for John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). This modification allows continuation of ongoing planning, construction and material procurement that are aligned with the optimal build plan for the ship, and it affords an opportunity for Newport News Shipbuilding to incorporate further construction process improvements into the construction plan. Work will be performed in Newport News and is expected to be complete by October 2017.

MADELEINE ALBRIGHT, the first woman to become U.S. Secretary of State. The politician and diplomat was sworn in on January 23, 1997.

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

JANET GUTHRIE, the first woman to compete in the Indy 500 and in the Daytona 500, both in 1977. Guthrie was an aerospace engineer before moving from amateur to pro in auto racing.

The senior leadership team joins all NNS shipbuilders in celebrating both the significant contributions women have made to our nation and the valuable role of our women shipbuilders.

SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR, the first female justice to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court. Justice O’Connor took her seat in 1981 and retired from the Supreme Court in 2006.

Throughout history, women have made significant contributions to our nation. In March, we celebrate all women for the positive impact they have made on society. Below are just a few of the trailblazers who have paved the way for future generations of women.
