Dear reader, Welcome to this new edition of Infosylva. Along with Viet Nam and Nepal, Mexico is part of an FAO pilot project that is testing different methods of evaluating soil cover in various forestry sites to help stop forest degradation. (In Spanish) A WWF report published on 21 April is cited as projecting that 11 places in the world, almost all in the tropics, will account for 80% of forest loss by 2030, unless deforestation in those areas is curbed. (In English, Spanish and French) In Peru, the High Commissioner in charge of the fight against illegal logging has invited the competent authorities to simplify procedures for indigenous communities to obtain tenure rights to forests, as a key measure to protect them. (In Spanish) Romania is the country of the European Union with the largest area of virgin forest. It is also the most affected by illegal logging, according to the Environmental Investigation Agency, a US-based NGO. (In English and French) And don’t forget that you have until 30 June 2015 to qualify for the early-bird rate when registering for the XIV World Forestry Congress, which will be held 7–11 September 2015 in Durban, South Africa. Junto con Vietnam y Nepal, México es parte de un proyecto piloto de la FAO que tiene como objetivo de probar diferentes métodos de evaluación de la cobertura del suelo en varios sitios forestales para ayudar a detener la degradación de los bosques. (En español) Según un informe del WWF publicado el 21 de abril, 11 lugares en el mundo, casi todos ubicados en los trópicos, representarán el 80% de la pérdida de bosques para 2030, a menos que se detenga la deforestación en esas áreas. (En inglés, español y francés) En Perú, el Alto Comisionado encargado de la lucha contra la tala ilegal planteó a las autoridades competentes simplificar los procedimientos para los cuales las comunidades indígenas obtienen derechos de tenencia de los bosques, como una medida clave para protegerlos. Es también el más afectado por la tala ilegal, según la Agencia de Investigación Ambiental, una ONG con sede en Estados Unidos. Au Pérou, le Haut-Commissaire en charge de la lutte contre l'exploitation forestière illégale a invité les autorités compétentes à simplifier les procédures pour que les communautés autochtones puissent obtenir des droits fonciers sur les forêts, comme une mesure clé pour la protection de ces forêts. (En espagnol) La Roumanie est le pays de l'Union européenne avec la plus grande zone de forêt vierge. Il est également le pays le plus touché par l'exploitation forestière illégale, selon l'Environmental Investigation Agency, une ONG basée aux Etats-Unis. Indigenous Food Systems, Agroecology and the Voluntary Guidelines on Tenure: A Meeting between Indigenous Peoples and FAO. 2-3 February 2015 - FAO, Rome Headquarters On the 2-3 February 2015, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations organized a technical meeting between Indigenous Peoples' representatives and FAO staff. This report includes the work plan based on the main suggestions made for how FAO and indigenous peoples can collaborate in the short, medium and long term. UNEP/UN-REDD publications with FAO contribution Benefits of forest ecosystems in Zambia and the role of REDD+ in a green economy transformation The main objective of the study was to assess the economic value of Zambia’s forest ecosystem services. The study estimates that, when ecosystem services provided by forests are accounted for, forests make a direct contribution to the national economy equivalent to about 4.7% of gross domestic product (GDP), which rises to 6.3% with the application of multiplier effects.
