Norriseal regularly hosts third-party inspection services that witness the air seat test and attest to the zero bubble capability of the valves. Norriseal equipment is capable of testing to a variety of air test requirements, such as the API 80 psi (60 – 100) or the 50 psi requirement dictated by other industry standards. Norriseal currently offers a testing service to a customer who requires a 235 psi air shell test on 100% of valves supplied to that customer. Again, the requirement to pass the low-pressure seat closure test is zero bubbles – there can be no leakage in order to pass the test. There are four Norris butterfly valve product series that are rated for positive shutoff:

Hydrostatic Testing

Positive shutoff, as defined by Norriseal, requires the valve to pass a hydrostatic (liquid)test with zero leakage. No water (zero drops) is allowed to pass through the valve onthe seat test and no water (zero drops) is allowed external to the valve on the shell test.

All (100%) Norris butterfly valves are hydrostatically pressure tested before shipment. There is no statistical or random sampling. Test pressures, based on the valve pressure rating and valve size, and the duration of the test may be found in the enclosed testprocedure charts (see Assembly/Test Procedure E1 on pages 2 & 3). These pressuresand durations are based on recognized industry standards.

Pneumatic Testing

In addition to hydrostatic testing, Norriseal can also perform pneumatic (air) testing on valves when required by our customers. Norriseal test stands are built to therequirement of the ¼-inch tubing immersed in water in the bubble jar to the specifieddepth. The API 598 low-pressure seat closure test can be performed on any size valvewith any given pressure rating.

Norriseal regularly hosts third-party inspection services that witness the air seat testand attest to the zero bubble capability of the valves. Norriseal equipment is capable of testing to a variety of air test requirements, such as the API 80 psi (60 –100) or the50 psi requirement dictated by other industry standards. Norriseal currently offers atesting service to a customer who requires a 235 psi air shell test on 100% of valvessupplied to that customer. Again, the requirement to pass the low-pressure seat closuretest is zero bubbles – there can be no leakage in order to pass the test.

Norriseal Test Standard and Certification

There can be confusion when the terms positive shutoff, zero bubble, Class V or Class VI are used across variousindustries. Norriseal testing is to the API 598 standard, which requires zero bubbles to pass. Norriseal’s position isthat our butterfly valves perform at least equal to Class VI as defined by ANSI FCI 70-2. Although class VI actuallyallows some leak rate in bubbles per minute, the Norriseal criterion is zero bubbles for the test duration.

Should there be questions regarding testing criteria, a Norriseal customer may specify on their purchase ordera “Certified Hydrostatic Test Report” to be supplied with the shipment or sent separately to the customer. A copy of the report format is enclosed (see Pressure Test Report for API 608/598-VAP E8 on page 4). Notethat it lists serial numbers of the valves and all test data. The report is signed by the test equipment operatorand witnessed by a Quality Control representative.
