kruger era - year siXHead Coach Lon Kruger is in his sixth season with the Runnin’ Rebels . In his five-plus years in Las Vegas, he has positioned the UNLV program once again as one of the most competitive in the West and has resurrected it on the national scene . While doing so, he has helped to re-energize the Las Vegas community around Runnin’ Rebel basketball . He has compiled a UNLV overall record of 116-53 ( .686) . However, since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Kruger has led his UNLV squad to an 82-26 mark ( .759), two consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2007

and 2008 (including wins each year), and a National Invitation Tournament bid in 2009 . In fact, the 21-win season in 2008-09 marked the first time UNLV has had three consecutive seasons with 20 or more wins since 1990-93 . The team's run to the 2007 Sweet 16 was UNLV's first NCAA Tournament appearance under Kruger, who won the MWC's and USBWA District VIII's 2007-08 Coach of the Year awards . The 2008 NCAA Tournament marked the second consecutive appearance for UNLV for the first time since 1990 and 1991 . The wins in the NCAA Tournament also marked UNLV’s first wins in the tourney since 1991 – a span of 16 years . UNLV's overall record was 21-11 in 2008-09, 27-8 in 2007-08, 30-7 in 2006-07, 17-13 in 2005-06 and 17-14 in his first season at UNLV (2004-05) . His first team was also invited to the NIT where it advanced to the second round . Kruger came to UNLV after a four-year stint in the NBA where he was the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks (2000-03) and was an assistant with the New York Knicks (2003-04) . Prior to making the jump from the college ranks to the NBA, Kruger spent 18 seasons as a head coach at Pan American (1982-86), Kansas State (1986-90), Florida (1990-96) and Illinois (1996-2000) . Kruger has a total of 503 career wins as a head coach (434 at the college level and 69 in the NBA) . With 2006-07's 30 wins at UNLV, 2007-08's 27 victories and last year's 21 wins, Kruger has led all five of the college programs he has coached to 20-win seasons . With 27 wins in 2007-08, Kruger led UNLV to back-to-back seasons with at least 22 wins for the first time since 1990-91 and 1991-92 and back-to-back 27-win seasons for the first time since 1989-90 and 1990-91 . Throughout his career, Kruger has established himself as one of the greatest change agents in college basketball history . In 2007, he became just the fifth coach in NCAA history to take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament and is one of just three coaches in NCAA history to win an NCAA Tournament game with four different schools . Additionally, Kruger is one of just four coaches to lead three different schools to Sweet 16 appearances in the NCAA Tournament . The 2008 NCAA Tournament appearance made Kruger one of just two head coaches in college basketball history to lead at least four different schools to multiple NCAA appearances . Kruger has led his teams to the postseason on 15 different occasions, with 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament and four in the NIT . He has compiled 10 20-plus victory seasons, was a two-time SEC Coach of the Year (1992 and 1994) and led his 1993-94 Florida squad to the NCAA Final Four . He is in his 24th season overall as a collegiate head coach and has a career record of 434-286 ( .603) as a collegiate head coach . Prior to the 2008-09 season, Kruger also began to oversee the community outreach and marketing efforts of the basketball program at UNLV . The results were successful with the Runnin’ Rebels average home attendance growing to No . 22 in the nation for the 2008-09 season, including being No . 1 on the West Coast (California, Washington, Oregon and Nevada) . In fact, UNLV’s home attendance numbers for the 2008-09 campaign were the highest in a decade and the second-highest since Jerry Tarkanian was coaching the Runnin’ Rebels in 1991-92 . runnin' rebels pickeD thirD in mwc pollThe Runnin' Rebels were picked to finish third during the 2009-10 Mountain West Conference season in the preseason media poll, which was announced in October . Runnin' Rebel junior guards Tre'Von Willis and Derrick Jasper each received preseason accolades as Willis was named to the preseason all-conference team and Jasper was selected as the Preseason Newcomer of the Year . Conference media overwhelmingly selected three-time defending MWC champion BYU as the pre-season favorite to win the conference regular-season title in 2009-10 . The Cougars, one of three teams to share the regular-season crown in 2008-09, captured 23 of 24 first-place votes and 215 points for the top spot in the poll . San Diego State, the 2009 MWC Tournament runner-up, collected the remaining first-place vote and 166 points to finish second, followed closely by UNLV in third with 161 points . Utah and New Mexico, who split the 2008-09 MWC regular-season title with BYU, landed in the fourth- and fifth-place spots, respectively, with the Utes tallying 143 points to the Lobos' 141 points . Wyoming received 89 points to finish sixth, followed by TCU (82 points) in seventh, Colorado State (58 points) in eighth and Air Force (25 points) in ninth to round out the poll . Three juniors and two seniors representing four institutions were chosen for the 2009-10 preseason All-MWC team . The Preseason All-MWC team consisted of Fredette, a junior guard, BYU teammate and senior guard/forward Jonathan Tavernari, San Diego State junior forward Billy White, TCU senior forward Zvonko Buljan and Willis .

receiVing VotesUNLV is not ranked in either the Associated Press or the Coaches' Top 25 Polls, but is receiving votes in each . The Runnin' Rebels received 18 votes in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll this week, which is the equivalent to being tied for 32nd, and UNLV received five votes in the Associated Press Poll, which is 46th .

three straight 20-win seasonsUNLV finished with 21 victories in 2008-09, and the program reached the 20-win plateau for the third straight season - the Runnin' Rebels won 30 games in 2006-07 and 27 in 2007-08 . It’s the first time since 1990-93 that UNLV has won 20-plus games three consecutive seasons . The Runnin' Rebels won 34 in 1990-91, 26 in 1991-92 and 21 in 1992-93 .

home attenDance best in a DecaDeOver the 18 home games in 2008-09, UNLV averaged a crowd of 13,446, which was its best home average attendance since the 1997-98 season when the Runnin' Rebels averaged 14,028 fans per home game, and was its second-highest mark since Jerry Tarkanian's last year as coach in 1991-92 . The average attendance in 2008-09 for conference games grew to just below 15,000 per game, including drawing a sellout crowd of 18,523 for a win over BYU, marking the program's first sellout since 1993 (vs . Georgetown) . The Georgetown game in 1993 drew 18,723, which included standing room only tickets . The largest previous attendance during the Lon Kruger era was 18,069 during Senior Day on March 3, 2007 . UNLV climbed to No . 22 in the nation in home attendance in 2008-09, including being No . 1 on the West Coast (California, Washington, Oregon and Nevada) . So far in 2009-10, UNLV is averaging 12,504 fans per game (over four home games) .

"3-point goal..."UNLV holds the NCAA record for most consecutive games scoring a 3-point goal . Since the 3-point field goal was adopted by the NCAA in 1986-87, UNLV has converted at least one 3-pointer in all 742 games played . Entering the 2009-10 season, Vanderbilt was second, 11 games behind UNLV . In UNLV’s 742 games, the Runnin’ Rebels have made 4,893-of-13,700 ( .357) shots from behind the arc . The Big West Conference experimented with the 3-point shot in the 1982-83, 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons . During that period, UNLV connected from 3-point range in 53 of the 64 games (the 3-pointer was used in some non-conference games) . The Runnin’ Rebels sank 194-of-505 ( .384) 3-point attempts during that time . With the experimental years included, the UNLV streak for games in which it has made at least one 3-point shot stands at 759 . The last time the Runnin’ Rebels failed to make at least one 3-pointer came against Long Beach State on Jan . 25, 1986 . So, UNLV has made at least one shot from behind the arc in 795 of the 806 games in which the rule was used . In the 806 total games, the Runnin’ Rebels have shot .358 from long distance while sinking 5,087-of-14,205 .

kruger a "change agent"On Feb . 9, 2008, against Colorado State at the Thomas & Mack Center, head coach Lon Kruger won the 400th game of his college coaching career (He currently has 434 career wins) . Kruger’s journey to the accomplishment is unique . He cemented his place in history as college basketball’s greatest change agent in March of 2007 when his UNLV squad advanced to the Sweet 16 in just his third season at the helm of the program . In 2007-08, he led UNLV to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since 1990 and 1991 . Five times Kruger has taken over a program and five times – within at least four years each time – his programs have reigned victorious . It is arguably the most-proven track record of raising programs by one coach . However, that career path makes getting to landmarks such as 400 wins that much more challenging . Of the 24 seasons Kruger has served as a head coach, a majority of the seasons were spent in the early stages of building programs . ● A20-winseasoninhisfourthyearatTexas-PanAmerican.HealsoservedasPanAmerican’sathleticsdirector–theyoungestADinthenationatthetime(hewas 29 when he was hired) – while also serving as a first-time head coach .
