COWGIRLS PICKED SEVENTHIn a vote of league head coaches, the Cowgirls were pickedtofinishseventhintheBig12.OSUtallied39 points, which was three behind Iowa State and 14 ahead of Texas Tech. Baylor was chosen as the preseason favorite to win the league.

RANKED AND READYThe Cowgirls entered the 2012-13 campaign ranked 23rd in the preseason Associated Press poll. The rankingmarksthefirsttimeOSUhasappearedinatleast one of the two major preseason polls since the 2008-09 season.

PRESEASON HOOPLAInadditiontothetwomajorpolls,theCowgirlswerealso ranked in the Top 25 in Lindy’s Sports College Basketball preseason magazine. In that poll, OSU waspicked15th.Additionally,CollegeSportsMad-ness had the Cowgirls No. 23 on its Top 44 women’s basketball ranking.

SEEKING SEVENWith their WNIT appearance in 2012, the Cowgirls extended their school-record string of postseason appearances to six. The run began with NCAA Tournament berths in 2007 and 2008. The 2009 campaign resulted in a WNIT appearance and was followed by another NCAA appearance in 2010 and a WNIT run in 2011.

NON-CONFERENCESUCCESSThe Cowgirls have had considerable success over the past seven seasons at home against non-conference foes. During that span, OSU has posted a 65-4 mark andhasgoneundefeatedfivetimes.TheCowgirlshad a 48-game non-conference winning streak, which came to an end in 2010 against No. 5 Duke.

OSU set a new record in 2008 with 14 wins before tying the mark in 2010. The 2011 campaign resulted in 15 victories before the Cowgirls’ shat-tered the mark with last year’s total.

Her 6.7 assists per game ranked second in the Big 12 and set a new school record for assists by a sophomore. She was also one of the stingiestdefendersintheBig12,tallying84stealson the season to rank fourth at 2.5 per contest.

WHAT’S BACKOSUreturnsitstopfivescorersaswellas88percentof its scoring and 77 percent of its rebounding from a year ago. The seven returning players on this year’s roster also combined to make 142 of the pos-sible 170 starts. Four of those players played in all 34 games with one other playing in 33 contests.

THE NUMBERS GAMEAs a junior, Toni Young became the 19th player in school history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau forhercareer.Shewillbeginherfinalseasonranked13thalltimeontheschool’sscoringchartandisoneof just two players in school history to record 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and 100 blocked shots.

HIGH-FLYINGACTDuringHomecomingandHoopseachofherfirsttwoyears,juniorToniYoungdisplayedherathleti-cism.TheDelCity,Okla.,nativedunkedeasilyonboth occasions, leaving Cowgirl fans wondering ifandwhenshewillbecomethefirstOSUplayerto do so in a game. Young’s ability to play above therimshouldcomeasnosurpriseasshetiedthenationalhighjumprecordwhileattendingDelCityHigh School. If she is able to dunk during a game she would join an elite list of women’s players. Only seven females have previously dunked in a game. WestVirginia’sGeorgeannWellswasthefirst,doingit twice in 1984. She was followed by North Caro-lina’sCharlotteSmith10yearslater.Tennessee’sMichelle Snow had three slams during her career, whileHouston’sSanchoLyttleandLSU’sSylviaFowles each had one. FollowingthetragicdeathsofheadcoachKurtBudkeandassistantcoachMirandaSernaonNov.17,LittellassumedhiscurrentroleanddirectedtheCowgirlstothe11th20-winseasoninprogramhistoryandsawhissquadextendits school-record string of postseason appearances to six in a row.

Fortheprevioussixyears,LittellhadservedasOSU’sassociateheadcoachandwasanintegralpartintheresur-gence of the Cowgirl program.

Afterservinginaninterimcapacityforhisfirstfourgames,Littellwasofficiallyelevatedtotheheadcoachingposi-tiononDec.9.

Itdidn’ttakeLittelllongtowritehisownchapterintheschool’srecordbooks,leadingthesquadtotheWomen’sNationalInvitationTournamenttitleinhisfirstseasonasheadcoach.

TheCowgirlsnotchedtheirfirstwinoveraTop25programunderLittell’sguidanceonJan.7witha70-51triumphoverNo.23Texas.IttookOSUjust17daystoearnitssecondwinoverarankedteamwithLittellatthehelmastheCowgirlsknockingoffthedefendingnationalchampion,TexasA&M.

Sandwiched in between OSU’s Top 25 triumphs was a down-to-the-wire Bedlam victory over Oklahoma, which snapped the Cowgirls’ eight-game losing streak against their in-state rivals. In the midst of a four-game losing streak,LittellralliedtheCowgirlswiththreeconsecutivevictoriestoclosetheregularseasonandprimethesquadfor its postseason run.

OSU’sWNITsemifinalvictoryoverSanDiegoresultedinLittell’s20thvictoryasheadcoach,makinghimthefirstcoachinprogramhistorytoachievethefeatduringtheirfirstseason.Aseason-bestcrowdof6,157filedintoGallagher-IbaArenaandhelpedpropeltheCowgirlstoa75-68victoryoverJamesMadisoninthetitlegame.

Individually,Littell’sfirstcampaignresultedinapairofplayersearningpostseasonrecognitionwithTiffanyBiasgarnering second-team All-Big 12 honors and Liz Donohoe being named the league’s freshman of the year.

Asassociateheadcoach,hewasinstrumentalintheCowgirlsproducingthenation’slargestturnaroundandtheprogram’sfirstNCAATournamentberthinmorethanadecadein2007.HealsohelpedOSUtoNCAAberthsin2008and 2010 as well as WNIT appearances in in 2009 and 2011.

PriortohismovetotheDivisionIlevel,Littellconstructedahalloffamecareerduringhis14-yeartenureatSewardCounty (Kan.) Community College,

A2009inducteeintotheNationalJuniorCollegeAthleticAssociationHallofFame,Littellcompiledaneye-poppingset of numbers at his former post as the Lady Saints won 87 percent of their games, tallying a 418-61 ledger and producingnineJayhawkWestConferencetitlesunderhisguidance.Overall,Littellownsa628-117markasaheadcoach.

Anine-timeconferencecoachoftheyear,LittellwasnamedtheWBCANationalCoachoftheYearin2001andwasselectedasthetopcoachintheregiononfouroccasions,earningthedistinctionin1999,2002,2004and2005.

LittellledSewardCountytoitsfirstRegionVItitlein1999andfollowedupwithregionaltitlesin2002,2004and2005.Inboth2000and2001,LittellledtheLadySaintstoaNo.1rankinginthefinalNJCAApollandacombinedrecordof32-0againstconferenceopponents.His2002squadproducedthreeAll-Americans,aperfect38-0markandtheschool’sfirst-evernationalchampionshipinanysport.HewasnamedtheNJCAANationalTournamentCoach of the Year that same season. Underhiswatch,theLadySaintsrecordedseven30-winseasons.Afterfinishingwitha14-16recordduringhisfirstseason,Littell’ssquadsneverproducedlessthan25winsinaseasonandaveragednearly32winsperyearagainstlessthanfourlossesoverthecourseofhisfinal13seasons.

The most impressive number of all may have come in the form of Seward County’s home record in his 14 seasons. From1995-2004,theLadySaintsdidnotloseahomegame,postinga135-gamewinningstreakinsidetheSCCCActivitiesCentertosettheNJCAAnationalrecord.Duringthecourseofhisfinal13seasons,Littell’ssquadswon99percent of their home contests, producing an astounding record of 189-2.

Alltold,hissquad’sproduced11All-AmericansandfiveRegionVIMostValuablePlayers.Ninetimes,oneofLittell’splayerswastabbedastheJayhawkWestConferenceMostValuablePlayer,whilefourplayersfromSewardCountyearnedtheleague’sfreshmanoftheyearhonorunderhisdirection.

PriortohisrunatSewardCounty,LittellspentoneseasonatGardenPlainsHighSchool,postinga21-3mark.Ashead coach at Friends University from 1983-88, he produced a 95-39 record and a pair of conference champion-ships. He also served as the assistant men’s coach at Cameron (Okla.) University from 1988-89.
