Countless studies have shown that resilience - having the inner strength to cope with any challenge - is critical for children to face difficulties and increase their academic outcomes. In our fast-paced, stressful world, all children need the capacity to overcome obstacles and deal with disappointments - whether in school, on the footy field, or in the playground. The research informs us that a resilient child is one that is socially competent, can problem solve, and has the ability to see a difficulty as a problem that can be worked on, (overcome, changed, endured, or resolved in some way); has good self-esteem and autonomy which allows the child to cope successfully with challenges; and is hopeful and optimistic about what tomorrow has install for them. And while no parent would deny these qualities for their child more and more parents are actually undermining their children’s’ ability to be resilient rather than reinforce it. Martin Seligman in his book The Optimistic Child wrote, “In order for your child to experience mastery, it is necessary for him to fail, to feel bad, and to try again repeatedly until success occurs. Failure and feeling bad are necessary building blocks for ultimate success and feeling good.” This and many other authors seem to be saying much the same thing, children need to have opportunities to fail to try things on their own and to be encouraged to get up and try again. Persistence and the bounce back capacity are qualities we want children to develop early as they navigate the challenges of life. RESILIENCY IN CHILDREN

Resilience is the buzz word of the moment. In the education and child development sectors, it is an important quality that has been identified, particularly with the rising rates of mental illness in our young people.

EVPS PE TEAM

GYMNASTICS PROGRAM FOR YEARS 3 AND 4, Term 3, 2018

Gymnastics is an important part of our Physical Education Curriculum at EVPS and PIT Gymnastics has been a provider of Gymnastic Programs in the Northern region of Melbourne for 25 years. Gymnastics is all about learning to control your body in a wide range of situations. With the proliferation of extreme sports such as skate boarding, water and snow skiing, ski boarding and roller blading, children need to further develop, through aspects of fitness – strength, muscular and cardio-vascular endurance and motor abilities – agility, flexibility, balance, aerial awareness and correct posture, to participate in these and more traditional sporting activities, in a safe and confident manner. We want the children to experience success and enjoyment within a gymnastics environment that has fully qualified coaches and professional gym equipment.

In term 3, we are offering a five-week gymnastics program at PIT Gymnastics, with each session running for 1 hour. All PIT Gymnastics staff are fully qualified gymnastic coaches under the National Coaches Accreditation Scheme. Our school has been booked in for 5 sessions (year 3) and 5 sessions (year 4) every Thursday with two classes attending each session at a time. The first session is to commence at 9.30am and the last at 1.30pm.

THE BORAL PROJECT

On Tuesday, 24th July, 8 volunteers from

Conservation Australia and 2 from local business

Boral, spent the day at EVPS helping to maintain our

garden. They cleaned out the Frog Bog, pruned and

weeded, and then put down lots of mulch. After

lunch the group battled the fierce winds and planted

50 seedlings (donated by the Parks Dept, City of

Whittlesea), under the large River Red Gum near the

Orange Portables. Thank you to our volunteers for

all their hard work and to Neville & Gerrard for

supervising during the day.
