No. 32 Friday 20th October 2017

Dear Parents,

The one who loves, gives to God and to others’ (Pope Francis Jan 9, 2014)

As Christians we know that love and service

go hand in hand - it is through offering help

to others that we truly are following the

example of Jesus himself. Love is the mark of

a disciple; reaching out in compassion, care,

listening and service.

It is love that influences how we treat the

people we meet every day, how we think of

other groups like the less fortunate, refugees,

asylum-seekers, and any other group of

people whose differences cause prejudice.

Love is the atmosphere we live in as

followers of Jesus.

How do we know if we are true followers of

Jesus? Some would say that it is spending a

long time at prayer, obeying a lot of rules,

fasting and alms giving. The real test is in the

few lines of the scripture, about loving one

another. Prayer is a means to love, but not an

end in itself.

One way of growing in love is to be grateful

for love in our lives. A prayer each night can

be to think back over the day and thank God

for love we received in the day, in small and

big ways. We can thank God also for love we

have been able to offer to others. The love

within us is God’s gift to us.

…….”love with deeds, not words. Words are

taken away by the wind! …… it is more

important to give than to receive. (Pope Francis)

Sun Safety At St Bernadette’s the teachers promote sun safety by

ensuring that the children wear their hats at recess

and lunchtimes and during sport and PE. The children

also wear their hats when they are outside for other

reasons. Parents are reminded and encouraged to

apply long acting sunscreen to children before they

come to school each day and to ensure that the

children bring a drink bottle containing water ( which

can be refilled as necessary) so that they remain

hydrated throughout the school day.

Attendance:

Every Learner, All Day, Every Day

We have fallen short of our minimum target of 90%

attendance this week.

88.3%

What does this mean in our context in real terms?

Across our school, 60 students missed out on some

learning this week!

Every moment of every day students attend school is

important, and attendance in this last term of the year

is no different. In Terms 1 and 2, the Infants grades

had very good attendance - almost always achieving

over 90%. The 88.3% achieved this past week is a

school average and most Primary grades achieved above the average and some Infants grades well

below the average, let alone the target.

Congratulations once again to Years 3, 4 and 5 for

achieving well over the target.

Parents and carers are reminded that they are

responsible for ensuring their children comply with

attendance requirements – that is – that they attend

whenever instruction is provided.
