New youthcentre forCaterhamOn Friday 23rd JanuarySurrey County Council ex-changed contracts for thelease of premises in God-stone Road in the centre ofCaterham Valley, whichwill provide a brand newyouth facility. SurreyCounty Councillor forCaterham Valley, SallyMarks, said: “This issomething that I haveworked hard for over thelast couple of years and Iknow that the communitywill be pleased to see thatthis project is about totake shape. The secondhighest priority of the res-idents during the ‘ABCHealthcheck’ survey wasto see more facilities foryoung people in the townand we are delivering.” The new youth centre willinclude a ‘Youth Café’ toprovide an exciting, vi-brant and safe place foryoung people to meet.

There will also be supportservices for young peoplebased on the premises andyoungsters themselvesare being involved in thedesign of the project.Sally added: “I have en-sured that Surrey CountyCouncil will deliver on itspromise to provide youthservices in the town and Ilook forward to this fantas-tic project being realised ina few months’ time. Marie CurieChief Executiveto meet withlocal campaignerThis month the Chief Ex-ecutive of Marie Curie,Thomas Hughes-Hallett isto meet members of thecampaign team that isfighting the closure of theCaterham hospice, led byRichard Holloway. Lastmonth Richard organised ademonstration outside thehospice in Caterham Val-ley which was attended byaround 200 people fromCaterham and beyond, protesting at the hospice’sclosure at the end ofMarch. On 28th January a dealwas announced in princi-ple that Surrey PrimaryCare Trust and St. Cather-ine’s Hospice in Crawleywill ensure the continua-tion of local end of lifeservices. Detailed plan-ning is underway to en-sure the services will bedeveloped in time forMarch 31st.

Campaign organiser,Richard Holloway, com-mented: “We remain verycautious about the situa-tion, particularly as theMarie Curie HQ is continu-ing to release misleadinginformation about thenumber of patients whichwere treated at the hos-pice last year and aboutthe ‘benefits’ of the pro-posed new nursing serv-ice, which continues to becondemned by just aboutevery health care profes-sional in the region.”

hood Inspector, Elaine

Burtenshaw

This month sees thelaunch of Tandridge’s firstNo Cold Calling Zone inWoldingham. I am veryexcited about this schemeas it will help residentsto deal with uninvitedcallers safely. It’s a jointinitiative between SurreyPolice and Surrey TradingStandards and will coveran area of around 850homes. The scheme isbeing supported by Wold-ingham Parish Council,Neighbourhood Watch andthe Woldingham Associa-tion.The No Cold Calling Zonewill really help to reinforcethe work Surrey Police isalready doing in advisingresidents on what to dowhen a stranger calls andmaking them aware of themethods used by distrac-tion burglars. We want people to feelsafe in their homes andable to turn people awaywithout having to worry.Remember, genuinecallers will not mind wait-ing while you check theirdetails. On a separate subject, during the recent coldsnap a number of roads in

Tandridge had to be closedfor safety reasons. Unfor-tunately, some people ig-nored the road closuresigns and attempted touse these roads, poten-tially putting their lives atrisk. Deciding to close a road istaken in order to protectthose who use the publichighways. Whilst a diver-sion might add extra min-utes to your journey, please do not ignore roadclosures in future becausethey are there to ensureSurrey’s roads are safe. Finally, can I remind mo-torists not to leave valu-ables on display in theirvehicles. We are continu-ing to see thefts frommotor vehicles when ex-pensive items, such aslaptops, SatNavs andtools, are clearly visible.Do not even leave items inyour boot as a thief willsearch there too. Crimeprevention advice is avail-able on our website,www.surrey.police.uk/ butthe main message is: ‘Donot give thieves an easyopportunity’.

The Caterham

Festival 2009www.caterhamfestival.org

“Tandridge Council havebeen very helpful in ar-ranging the necessary li-cences. Many of the shopsare planning to open up forthe afternoon, so thewhole event should govery smoothly”. If you want to take part, orcan assist in the organisa-tion of the street party, please email [email protected] is still time for filmmakers to submit theirmovies for inclusion intothe film festival part of theprogramme. The two cate-gories are ‘Caterham overthe years’ and ‘New Film-makers – Original ShortFilms’. Films must be pro-vided on digital or VHS for-mat and sent to : BecciKenning c/o The Arc, 39Weston Drive, Caterham,Surrey CR3 5XY or e-mailed to [email protected]. Please includeyour name, address, phone number and e-mailif possible. The closingdate is 27th February2009.

Plans are forging ahead forCaterham’s first ever arts-based Festival. The Festi-val will run from 22nd May- 28th June and will fea-ture a street party, chil-dren's’ festival, choralevents, local rock bands,Open Caterham, and adrive-in movie. New activ-ities will link with estab-lished favourites such asthe Caterham Carnival, and Party in the Park. The street party will beopen to all residents ofCaterham and will takeplace in the High Streetfrom 2pm-9pm on Sunday24th May. There will betwo performing areas andlocal bands are beingsought to appear on thestages. The afternoon willstart with a Boat Racedown the high Street! Therace is being organised byCaterham Round Table andwill involve contestantsrunning between the pubswearing a hardboard'boat'. Andy Parr, Chair-man of the Festival said:

Snow chaos -Council fails totreat key routesAlthough the snow wasforecast, no-one expected12 inches of snow to fall insuch a short space of timeon the afternoon/eveningof Sunday 1st February.Within hours, cars werestranded and shops hadsold out of milk and breadas residents prepared forsiege conditions. Walkingwas soon the only way toget from Caterham Valleyto Caterham-on-the-Hilland vice versa, thanks tothe Council’s failure to gritthe roads. John Orrick from Cater-ham-on-the-Hill, pointedout: “Despite Church Hill, the High Street, Whyte-leafe Road, Chaldon Road,Westway and CoulsdonRoad all meeting SurreyCounty Council’s own cri-teria for priority treatment(bus routes, schools, hos-pital, steep gradient, am-bulance station), the onlyone treated after two dayswas Church Hill and that atthe specific request of theDene Hospital who had toadmit new patients! Theyalso failed to refill gritboxes after the last snowwe had so residents werenot able to complete thetask of clearing footpathsand in some cases roads.Surrey must fill theseboxes as a high priorityimmediately they haveconcluded the task ofopening all routes, andcertainly before the nextcold snap.”

Ian on one of the camels called ‘Sarbell’

Coping with the loss of aparent can be a traumaticand lonely experience for ayoungster, and the UKbased charity ‘Jigsaw4U’has worked for ten years tohelp children, young peo-ple and their families dur-ing times of grief. At the age of 12 back in2003, de Stafford pupil IanKugler tragically lost his fa-ther after he suffered aheart attack. Jigsaw4Uprovided support for Ianand his mother, and lastyear Ian embarked on anexpedition to cross theSinai desert to raise moneyfor the charity that helpedhim. “I was part of a group ofyoung people from Surreyaged between 12 and 23years of age who had allbeen helped by Jigsaw4U,”said Ian. “I only heardabout the expedition inMarch 2008 which gave mejust three months to raisethe £2,800 sponsorship

money I needed to takepart in the expedition. deStafford were brilliant, or-ganising a Mufti Day, cakesale and sports events tohelp me raise the money.Miss Cassie even managedto get hold of a signedCrystal Palace shirt whichwe auctioned off.”Ian spent the first twodays of the three week tripgetting acclimatised to theheat, then the group vis-ited a youth centre in As-sala where the Bedouinpeople live, before settingoff on the trip across thedesert. “It was scary at first!” re-called Ian. “Our feet sunkdeep into the sand and we

had to take snake andscorpion anti-venomtablets. One of my friendswas about to put his sockon and there was a scor-pion in it! At one point Ibecame dehydrated andnearly collapsed. Apartfrom that I had a fantasticexperience and madesome great friends.”Now at Reigate College,Ian is planning to travelwith the Caterham Over-seas Aid Trust (COAT) toKenya this year to help thechildren at a school inKimillili. For more informationabout ‘Jigsaw4U’ call01342 313895, or visitwww.jigsaw4u.org.uk

Scouts toughenup for the annualFrost Camp!by District Commissioner,

John Andrews

50 scouts from Caterham joined300 from across Surrey on theannual Frost Camp last month atBentley Copse. They arrived afterdark, and then had a challengingnew experience tent pitching intotal darkness. Saturday was dry and not toocold. After a hearty breakfast, the youngsters took part in shoot-ing, go karting, archery, crossingan assault course, a zip wire andbackwoods cooking! There werealso indoor entertainments tokeep them amused. Saturday evening saw a changein the weather, and as 300 peoplestarted a camp fire the heavensopened, and the wind started.Undeterred, they continued withthe fire and later that eveningsaw the scouts charging aroundthe woods in a wide game, whichwas won by a team from HamseyGreen scouts. Other scouts went and camped atour site in Chaldon. Again, it wasrather wet overnight, but they allenjoyed themselves.

There were more activities onSunday which was, luckily, dryand warm again.Locally, the young people havebeen doing normal scouting activ-ities in preparation for the sum-mer camps such as night hikes, learning to cook and learningabout food hygiene. The dark evenings are great forstar gazing, and talks have beengiven by the Croydon Astronomi-cal Society at meetings, whilstsome groups have been fortunateto visit the observatory at Green-wich. One group went to Londonand enjoyed a fascinating visit tothe science museum.I have had great fun since Istarted as District Commissioner, going round to visit the groups, and seeing all these activities. Iam really proud of all the leaderswho put so much effort into mak-ing a difference to the lives of theyoung people. If you would like to assist in thesescouting activities please call meon 01883 783961.

In praise of our teensAbout two years ago, asmall group of lads werecoming home late whenthey noticed that a kitchenwas on fire in my block offlats. They ran through ourblock banging on doorsand most of us joined inalthough the occupants ofthe flat in flames could notbe roused. The boys hadimmediately called the firebrigade and as a result thelives of two young men,

who had left a chip pan onthe stove, were saved. On another occasion, myson and his friend hadgone to meet friends atQueens Park when theydiscovered a young man ina wheelchair stuck firmlyin the muddy ground, as itwas raining hard. Morefriends came over andthey covered him withtheir jackets. Not beingable to communicate withhim, they called the am-bulance and the youngman was removed to asafe place. So when you read in thenewspapers that theBritish youth are out ofcontrol, please pause tothink. This is the verystuff that sells newspapersand whipping everyone upinto a panic is what theyare particularly good at. Continued on page 11.

‘Going private’

on the NHSAt the age of 78, Caterhamresident Sidney Eddollshad plenty of experience ofthe NHS, so when at theend of 2007 he was told heneeded two knee replace-ments, he started explor-ing his options.“The NHS wasn’t that bad,”explained Sidney. “It wasjust a case that the staffare so overworked youcan’t possibly get the stan-dard of treatment youwould want in an idealworld. When I found out Ineeded two knee replace-ments a friend told meabout Patient Choice and Irealised that I would beable to have my treatmentdone in a private hospital.”With the help of his GP,Sidney was referred to theNorth Downs Hospital inCaterham, run by theRamsay Health Caregroup. He went in for thefirst operation in January2008, followed by the sec-ond four months later.“I spent three nights in

Pensions - the

final frontierby Jerry Connor,

Kenley Financial Ltd.

Well let’s start with somegood news for the NewYear. The government is-sued a report in 2008 thatshowed life expectancyrates were higher in theSouth than anywhere elsein the UK. The lowest wasactually Scotland, my wifeis Scottish but she saysshe came down here tomarry me rather than justto live longer, but younever know! My baby daughter Ruby ispredicted to live to 83.The startling thoughtaround this fact is that ifshe aspires to retiring at55 she will be in retire-ment for possibly a longertime than work. Thismeans of course that sheneeds her income to lastlonger and hope it will notrun out. The government has al-ready moved the goal-

posts to make it difficultfor Ruby and people retir-ing after 2020 to have ahigher level of income inretirement. State pensionsare being equalised to 65and then moving to 68,this means of course thatif people want to retireearlier they need to dosomething themselves. Please check out The Pen-sions Service website tosee how this affects you. There is a growing gap be-tween what people expectthey will be getting as anincome in retirement andwhat they may actually re-ceive. Surveys suggestaround 20% of the work-ing population save noth-ing towards retirementwhilst 60% take no adviceeven when approachingretirement.

The current basic statepension for a single personis currently £90.70 perweek. I would suggest on itsown, this may not lead toa very comfortablelifestyle in retirement butit’s a fact that’s what a lotof people have to live on. This leaves a growingnumber of people who areFacing Retirement withEarnings Doubts (FREDS).Now I don’t actually knowmany people called Fredbut there are probablymany who now need reas-surance in these volatiletimes about what theymay expect to live on inretirement. As Spock would have said,we all want to ‘live longand prosper’ so please en-sure you take some fromof guidance from your ad-viser , bank or accountantto maximise your pensionprospects. For help and advice onpensions or other financialmatters you can call Jerryon 020 8660 1533 or e-mail:[email protected]

Itwas really lovely and I amjust glad I had the oppor-tunity to go there,” saidSidney.General Manager, KarenBadger from North DownsHospital said: “Sidney wasour first NHS Choice pa-tient and I am delightedthat he had such a positiveexperience with us that hechose to come back againso soon!” To find out more call theNorth Downs Hospital enquiryline on 01883 337441.

The Village Inn - traditionalfood, contemporary styleReview by Julia Church

In sub-zero temperatures, the last thing on my mind issticking to a diet, despitemy New Year’s Resolutions.During freezing weather, what could be more wel-come than a nice hot bowlof soup with warm crustybread, or a steaming plateof sausages, mash andonion gravy? After all, youhave to ‘stoke the boiler’ tokeep warm! The Village Innin Caterham-on-the-Hill hasan excellent selection of tra-ditional English dishes;meals that were no doubtoriginally concocted with thecold winter climate in mind, such as Liver and Bacon,Sausages and Mash andBeef & Ale Pie, alongsideyear-round favourites thatinclude Seabass Fillets,home-made Chille ConCarne and of course Sirloin

Very happywith our choices, we boththoroughly enjoyed ourmeals and decided to forgodessert, despite the temp-tation of favourites such asWarm Chocolate Brownie,Treacle Roly Poly and Appleand Sultana Pie and cus-tard! The Village Inn offers excel-lent value especially when

and Rump Steaks. There isalso a selection of delicioussalads which I will be sureto try when I no longer needcentral heating! When my daughter and Ivisited The Village Inn lastmonth I started with theSoup of the Day - CarrotSoup (£2.95) which washot, thick and creamy witha hint of spice, and camewith a warm, crustybaguette; very pleasant in-deed. Jenny selected theSpiced Kofte Kebabs(£4.35), delicious lamb ke-babs served with Tazziki. For our main course weboth selected a dish fromthe grill. Jenny chose herfavourite, the 8oz RumpSteak served with grilledflat mushroom, tomato, chips and peas (£10.95),while I decided to try the

Theescapades of a few cheeky young-sters locally, with nothing to do andnowhere to go does not actually indi-cate a lack of morality in our commu-nity. While on the subject, isn't it time theCouncil started to provide some ap-propriate facilities for our Caterhamyoungsters? How about some teenshelters to show them that they are

The importance of setting

goals by Steve Robertson, Energy for Life

It’s that time of year whenwe are trying to keep ourNew Year promises and Iwonder how many of youare still on the right track?A lot of people fail at exer-cise regimes or pro-grammes, not for lack offocus or motivation butbecause they have no firmdirection. It’s not enoughto want to exercise or toget a bit fitter, or to dietand lose some weight, al-though these approachesmay be effective in theshort term and will havepositive health benefits.

Before you embark on ahealth routine or fitnessprogram, it’s imperativethat you set yourself clearand realistic goals. How to set goalsBe tough on yourself, it allcomes down to your healthin the end! Only you cantake the decision to im-prove, neglect or disregardit totally.
