A 12m wide aft ramp is provided, which can carry loads of up to 505 tons, and the vessel can call at ports without adequate cargo-handling facilities. IHI Marine United Inc. has deliv-ered the 8,600TEU container carrierHELSINKI BRIDGE (Hull No. 3287)to Daisy Ship Holding S.A. at its KureShipyard. The HELSINKI BRIDGEis one of the largest class of containercarrier, and IHIMU’s sophisticatedshipbuilding technology and experi-ence were exploited for this carrier.

For economical operation on con-tainer trades, an electronically con-trolled main engine is installed on thecarrier. To achieve more optimumoperation, the latest systems such asthe turbo charger cut-off system andinverter-controlled cooling seawaterpump are applied. These systems con-tribute to reduction of both fuel oil con-sumption and gas emissions.

Good propulsion performance andgood maneuverability are achievedwith the latest technology of IHIMU,

nization (IMO) has been strengthen-ing its regulations on marine environ-ment more and more recently. Theemission of NOx by ships should belower than 17g/kWh in the first regu-lation of 2000, 14.4 g/kWh in the sec-ond regulation of 2011 and will belower than 3.4 g/kWh in the tertiaryregulation of 2016, which is 80% less

than that of thefirst regulation ina specific sea area.MES has devel-oped various tech-nologies for envi-ronmental controlincluding NOx

emission controland has carriedout confirmationtests using one ofthe world’s largesttest diesel enginesinstalled in themachinery factoryof Tamano Worksin 2010.

The EGR devel-

oped by MES, which recently clearedthe IMO’s NOx Tier III requirements,is a system to reduce NOx emissionby lowering peak combustion gas tem-perature by re-circulating a part ofengine exhaust gas to the engine. Themost distinctive feature of this systemis this is the world’s first integratedtype with the engine. By integrationof the entire EGR system into one unit,the compact design entails only mi-nor changes to the engine outline com-pared with other NOx emission con-trol systems, thus necessitating theleast design modification of an engineroom.

MES, as a leading manufacturer oflarge size low speed marine dieselengines in Japan, is developing tech-nologies for NOx emission control aswell as for reduction of CO2 emission(energy saving technology). MES iscommitted to satisfy the various needsof the customers in the future with awide range of products including thegas burning engine (ME-GI) which isalso a well-established technology ofMES.

Sanoyas Shipbuilding Corp. deliv-ered the 120-type Handy Cape bulkcarrier JUBILANT TREASURE con-structed at Sanoyas Mizushima Ship-yard to the owner Ever Bright Ship-ping, S.A. on May 23, 2012. The ves-sel is the 6th newbuilding of the120,000DWT type Handy Cape bulkcarrier series.

This advanced new vessel has largedeadweight with shallow draft, antici-pating trade expansion for coal andiron ore in the future market. The ves-sel with wide beam and shallow draftwill clear the restrictions of some portsfor large bulk carriers and has beennamed “Handy Cape” because of thehighest flexibility among Cape sizebulk carrier.

To improve propulsion efficiency,the vessel uses a low-speed and long-stroke main engine combined with ahigh-efficiency propeller together withan energy saving device called “STF”(Sanoyas-Tandem-Fin (patent): max.6% energy saving) on the stern shell,which also contributes to the reduc-tion of CO2 emissions.

This vessel complies with the Com-mon Structural Rules (CSR) of the

Sanoyas completes 120-type Handy Cape bulker JUBILANT TREASUREInternational Association of Classifi-cation Societies. Various countermea-sures for protection of the environ-ment are incorporated, which includefuel oil tanks of double hull structures,holding tank for accommodation dis-charges, and dirty hold bilge and in-dependent bilge segregation systemsfor the engine room.

The widest possible openings areprovided for the No. 1 to No. 7 cargoholds in the same sizes, which facili-tate cargo handling. The vessel hasdedicated fresh water tanks for stor-ing hold-washing water generated bya large capacity type fresh water gen-erator. In addition, the special fuel oilheating system installed in the fueloil storage tanks helps to avoid cargodamage by over-heating, and savessteam consump-tion.

JUPITER SPIRIT cuts 3% energy consumptionwith STEP in waves verified in actual navigation

Naikai Zosen Corporation hasproved its STEP, an energy-savingdevice for ships, has the energy sav-ing effect of 3% in actual navigation.The STEP (Spray TEaring Plate) wasfixed on the bow of the JUPITERSPIRIT, a 45,961GT pure car andtruck carrier, constructed for NissanMotor Car Carrier Co., Ltd. at theNaikai’s Setoda Works in June lastyear. Since then data acquisition forenergy saving has been continued.

The STEP is an energy-saving de-vice of a pair of plates attached to bothsides of the bow above the waterline.The STEP is effective to reduce thewave resistance on the hull. Conse-quently, the fuel consumption can beimproved without losing ship speeddue to wave resistance. In water tanktests, the device was estimated to de-crease the wave resistance by about18% under the wave conditions andto reduce the energy consumption byabout 2% under head waves of Beau-fort scale 6.

Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK)has acknowledged these results witha highly accurate evaluation methodcombining water tank tests and theo-retical calculations, which is calledSPICA (Ship Performance Index Cal-culation Program), and the STEP has

As a re-sult, about 3% decrease in energy con-sumption was proved under the con-ditions of 2 m or more high waves,which exceed the STEP.

Universal Shipbuilding Corpora-tion delivered the FPMC B JUSTICE,a 205,000DWT bulk carrier, to FPMCJustice Marine Corp. at the Tsu Ship-yard on March 29, 2012. The vessel isdesigned to carry coal and iron ore be-tween Asia and Australia more effi-ciently and to provide flexibility forport restrictions. This is the 23rd ves-sel of a new design series of Newcastle-max that is not only the most efficientfor shallow draft, but also has largecargo hold capacity.

The vessel uses double side skinconstruction for cargo holds to reduceflooding risk due to side damage andimproved cargo handling. In spite ofthe cargo holds with a double sideskin, the cargo capacity is equivalentto that of previous single skinnedNewcastle-max series. The vessel isequipped with high propulsion effi-ciency and energy saving devices, SSD(Super Stream Duct) and Surf-Bulb(Rudder Fin with Bulb), in front of andbehind the propeller. In addition, the

This is the second vessel of the classof 115,000DWT-type product oil car-riers, which has been developed as thenew generation of double hullAframax tanker series. Namura has

Pure epoxycoating is applied to the cargo oil tanksand cargo piping to prevent cargoesfrom being contaminated by rust.Radar-type tank level gauges areequipped for the cargo oil tanks, sloptanks and residual slop tank.
