QuestionQuestion:: Why do races such as African Americans have lower survival rates in cancer than Caucasians (whites)?
HypothesisHypothesis:: Different death rates are mostly caused by genetics, smoking, poverty, and unhealthy lifestyles.
GeneticsGenetics
One of the reasons for cancer diagnosis is from past generations of a family.
Unfortunately, it can’t be prevented– Sue Friedman believes that her diagnosis of
breast cancer was because of her grandmother. They can also be a result from mutation or
damage in the genes.
Smoking
Top cause of lung cancer About 157,300 cancer deaths are expected
to be caused by tobacco use in 2010. Tobacco is also the top reason for cancer
deaths that can be avoided Other countries or races may have started
smoking later than Caucasians.
Poverty
Not having enough money to pay for doctor’s appointments or treatments for diseases.
Poverty in places like Africa could be one of the reasons as to why people with an African decent have higher death rates
– Zambia is an example of a country with many people who don’t have the money to pay for treatments.
Environmental Factors
Factors can be widely divided into environmental factors, including chemicals, radiation, and viruses.
It is very important to be able to identify what types of chemicals one is surrounded by and to be very careful with his/her surroundings.
Relates to poverty and how some people do not have enough money to live in a safe environment.
Unhealthy Lifestyle
Over 100,000 new cancer cases are linked to lack of physical activity and lack of good nutrition.
It is proven that people from specific countries have people who lack exercise, so they suffer from obesity.
Mammography
A type of treatment that detects breast cancer at a very early stage.
Is used in many countries around the world. Low cost so it is easier for people to get the
right treatment.
Why I Chose this TopicWhy I Chose this Topic
A very big problem occurring in the country Volunteering at a hospital in Lebanon
allowed me to see how patients were treated who had cancer and it got me really interested.
Progress/Data Collection
I have chosen 4 peer-reviewed scholarly articles to read through and analyze how they fit with my research.
Interview- Dr. Platz has given me a lot of advice about my research and has helped a lot in giving me specific information.
Final ProductFinal Product
I will be creating my own website.
Share it with my advisor, and also with my uncle who is a radio oncologist.
I will also share it with a group of students at Mount Hebron to see how effective it is.
