no expectation of birth and coaching skills harms us all
DESCRIPTION
Who knows whether childbirth is natural or not. On the one hand getting pregnant and giving birth is a natural part of life. But it all goes down a slippery slope. What if you can't get pregnant? What if there are medical reasons you need a non-labouring Caesarean? STOP THAT SLIPPERY SLOPE! Let's back up, move forward and think differently. Giving birth is always an activity you'll do! That's the short and the long of it. If you labour and have a vaginal birth then you'll be confronted with the discomfort or pain of contractions. If you labour and have an emergency Caesarean you'll have done the hard yakka and then you'll spend time doing the activity of being prepped and having surgery. If you have a non-labouring Caesrean you'll spend time doing the activity of getting to hospital, being prepped and in surgery. GIVING BIRTH IS ALWAYS AN ACTIVITY YOU'LL DO! And who is you? Both of you ... mother and father. You're both doing the activity of birthing your baby. So become skilled. The long and short of it. Jump ahead of the curve and ignore the societal message that skills don't matter. You need to be a great skilled birthing coach so you can do the activity of helping your birthing partner do the activity of birthing your baby.TRANSCRIPT

Good things about NZ maternity system
It’s FREE!You have one midwife who will get to know your family
during pregnancy, be there during the birth and visit afterwards for 6 weeks!
Your midwife will continue their care even if you need specialist care!
You have ‘choices’, can create a Birth Plan that is respected unless there’s a reason for change!
NZ society views birth as ‘natural’ unless there is a medical reason!
NZ expectant dads therefore actually are way ahead of the curve compared to men in other countries.

What’s wrong with the picture?
Expectant parents lack skills – this means YOU
Birthing Better with The Pink Kit Method®www.thepinkkit.com and www.birthingbetter.com
NZ society has set up this wonderful system without taking into consideration what role the expectant parents really need to play
NZ has changed the place of birth from only hospital to being able to choose home birth
NZ has changed primary birth provide from GP/obstetrical specialist to midwives
Yet, these things don’t change the fundamental problem… a lack of skilful parents-to-be.
Birthing Better with The Pink Kit Method®www.thepinkkit.com and www.birthingbetter.com
Two changes in NZ maternity services sit on top of a much deeper and pervasive belief about childbirth that has existed for generations
We’ve been brought up to believe Birth is a natural part of live but can sadly have
complications You never know what a birth will be like; hard, easy,
short, long, painful or manageable
Birthing Better with The Pink Kit Method®www.thepinkkit.com and www.birthingbetter.com
Initial assumptions is not entirely accurate
Are you able to see that giving birth is actually an activity?
Understand that woman’s success does not come from controlling the activity – she can’t.
It comes from managing the activity well EVEN when she doesn’t like the painful sensations
She can do it better with your help

Learning birth skills will give any birthing woman…
Various coping behaviours
Things to do to manage the natural occurring pain
A better mental ‘focus’ rather than to think about the intense sensations common to the process

Learning coaching skills gives you and all expectant fathers, friends, or relatives the ability to; Help her cope with natural occurring pain Help her totally relaxin the time between
contractions Help her use her mental ‘focus’ skills to keep her
body open and relaxed rather than to instinctively or intuitively tense up.
Help her actively working through the activity

Fathers are ‘there’ but don’t know ‘how-to’
New Zealand society expects you to ‘be there’ or ‘do something’, so you need to learn the right skills
Take responsibility for your own experience of pregnancy and childbirth and reap the rewards; Praise from your midwife, your partner, your family
and friends Personal sense of achievement and accomplishment No fear of your newborn

Skilled coaching fathers matter
If your pregnant partner will have a non-labouring Caesarean, she still has to go through the activity of going to hospital, being prepped, having surgery and experiencing recovery.
You can still totally enjoy preparing her body to give birth and use skills throughout the day of your baby’s birth. Why not?
Being a skilled father-to-be only has benefits and absolutely no negative side effects. This is how you become a DIY Father.
