Doodle Your World, the Japan Edition, was written by myself and Simon Pile, a deputy head teacher from England. The idea behind this book was to inspire children to learn more about Japan and at the same time learn new ICT skills using the iPad. Both Simon and I are Apple Distinguished Educators and are passionate about unlocking children’s creativity using the iPad. In the book children find out
about different place in Japan, learning some facts and figures about landmarks from Sapporo to Okinawa. Some of the places are famous all over the world, such as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, while others are not as well known, such as the Glico man in Osaka. We thought it was important to share the well-known while at the same time giving a balanced geographical spread of lesser known places outside of the main tourist areas. After learning about the landmark, students are given a doodle challenge to complete in the accompanying Keynote that we made. These challenges include animating the shinkansen to zoom past Mount Fuji and taking a Geisha selfie. All of the challenges are designed to introduce a feature of Keynote and think about different ways of using this new skill. To support and extend children each task has a link to the Everyone Can Create series of books written by Apple. I thoroughly enjoyed writing the book and gained many useful experiences from this project. Our collaboration was completely online and we were able to communicate easily despite us being more than 10,000km apart. I learnt some new skills and was proud to share some of my knowledge of Japan with people all over the world. I am also very happy that this book has been downloaded by teachers worldwide and has motivated students to learn more about Japan and develop their ICT skills. I hope that the readers of this publication can take some time to download this book and find out how they can use the iPad and technology in more engaging ways.
