SWIMMING LESSONS

Our grade one to nine students will participate in swimming lessons at the JBS Canada Centre pool in Brooks April 1-4. Each day students will receive a one-hour lesson. This is enough time for them to earn a level on the Red Cross Swim Program if they are able to perform all the requirements for that level.

The actual cost of lessons and transportation is about $45 per child. As we live near rivers, canals, lakes and dugouts, the school wants to ensure ALL students have strong swimming skills. Therefore, there will be NO CHARGE to students. The cost will be covered using prior donations from Cookie Connection.

Students will also enjoy a fun swim day, without lessons, on Friday, April 5. This is a fun day to try out new skills learned during swim lessons, and to further promote comfort in the water.

HOT LUNCHES

There is a lot going on this month, so only two hot lunches will be offered. On April 15, the grade 5/6 class will be serving baked mac & cheese with veggies. Order forms are due April 12th.

Remember, you can purchase hot lunch using the School Cash Online program. Simply visit the Rolling Hills School website, click on School Cash Online logo at the top of the page and register. Once registered, you can purchase school items from the comfort of your home. If you need assistance with your registration, please see Kimberley in the office

On April 29th, the school will offer a FREE hot lunch, using funds from the Nutrition Budget. Some of our Mennonite parents will be preparing and serving sloppy joes with veggies and dessert!

Everyone in the school will receive this free lunch. No order form will be sent home. ECS children will get their free hot lunch on Tuesday.

TWIN DAY

Tuesday, April 9th is Twin Day! Staff and students are encouraged to find a partner or two and become twins for the day. Dress in the same outfit, socks, shoes, hats, and style your hair the same. Use your imagination and have fun! This is always a popular spirit day event.

HIGH SCHOOL REGISTRATION

Later this month, our grade nine students will travel to Brooks Composite High School to spend the day with their grade 10 buddy. This will allow them to ride the bus to Brooks, tour the high school, meet teachers and attend classes, giving them a taste of what high school will look like for them this fall.

Grade nine students and their parents will attend registration night (date TBA) to select courses and option classes for their grade ten year.

This is such an exciting time for our kids as they step out of the rural school setting and begin their new phase of learning as young adults in the City of Brooks. Make us proud, Rolling Hills Graduates!

2019-2020 GRASSLANDS CALENDAR

Next year’s school calendar has been finalized and approved by the board of Grasslands Public

Schools. The calendar is available on the Grasslands website at www.grasslands.ab.ca or the website at rollinghills.grasslands.ab.ca.

The first day of classes will be September 3, 2019, after the Labour Day long weekend. The school year will end on June 26, 2020.

Parents, please access the calendar and review school dates and holidays prior to planning family holidays.

PITCH-IN COMMUNITY CLEANUP

Each spring, our students walk the streets of our community picking up

garbage as part of our town cleanup. Now that the snow has melted the garbage and debris that accumulated over the winter has been exposed, and we don’t like it, not one little bit!

April 22-29 is designated Pitch-In Week. During our school walk on Monday, April 29, students will be picking up garbage from the playground, ditches and around town.

Community residents are encouraged to do the same around their yards, businesses and ditches. When the spring rains come, our hamlet will be ready for a fresh coat of grasshopper green!

SKILLS CANADA COMPETITION

Many of the students from our area have gone on to pursue a career in the trades. One of the main reasons is Brooks Composite High School offers many trade-related classes that students can try out in high school, and many discover they love working with their hands!

To further expose our junior high students to the world of trades, they will travel to Medicine Hat College on April 30th to observe the South East Regional Skills Canada Competition.

Skills Canada Competitions feature the talents of Alberta’s trade and technology high school and post secondary students, some of which are students from our area.

Trades that will be showcased include Automobile Technology, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Robotics, Photography, Culinary Arts, Fashion, Hairstyling, Electrician, Graphic Design and Welding.

Students, what will your future look like? Will it involve a career in the trades? After touring the Medicine

Hat Skills Competition, it just might!

EASTER ACTIVITIES

On Thursday, April 18, the last day of school before the Easter Break, students will take part in Easter activities and a scavenger hunt. These will be organized by the junior high spirit committee.

If the weather is nice, some of the fun may even move outdoors! Just one more benefit of having a late Easter break!

COMMUNITY GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

Everyone is invited to attend the non-denominational Good Friday Service at the Rolling Hills Community hall on Friday, April 19.

The service will start at 11:00 a.m. This is a special time for the community to come together in friendship and fellowship. Please bring something for the cold potluck lunch to follow the service.

We hope to see you there.

EASTER BREAK

Are you confused about how we determine when Easter Sunday will fall each year? Why is it in mid-March one year and late April another?

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday following the first full moon after the first day of spring. This year, we had a full moon on March 20, which was the first day of spring. Therefore, we have to wait until the next full moon, which will be on April 19. The first Sunday after that is April 21, so that will be Easter Sunday! It is perfectly clear now, right??!

This later Easter break should make for some wonderful outdoor activities! All Grasslands students and staff will enjoy a full week off, beginning on Good Friday, April 19 until April 28th. Now that the snow has melted it

actually feels like spring, so get out there and enjoy the wonderful weather!

PROVINCIAL ACHIEVEMENT TESTING

The Provincial Achievement Tests are standardized exams given to all grade 6 and 9 students in the province. Part A of the Language Arts exams will be given in May. This is the written essay component.

Part B of the exam is the multiple choice comprehension portion, and it will be written in June, along with all the other core subject exams. Combined grades will write similar exams on the same dates as scheduled P.A.T.’s.

Mark your calendar with these important dates for exams:

May 7: Gr. 7-9 Language Arts Part A

May 8: Gr. 5-6 Language Arts Part A

June 12: Gr. 5-6 Math Part A

June 12: Gr. 7-9 Math Part A

“ALL I EVER NEEDED TO KNOW I LEARNED IN KINDERGARTEN”

Originally published in 1986, Robert Fulghum’s philosophy on early childhood learning still rings true today. These are the things I learned in Kindergarten:

Share everything.

Play fair.

Don't hit people.

Put things back where you found them.

Clean up your own mess.

Don't take things that aren't yours.

Say you're SORRY when you hurt somebody.

Wash your hands before you eat.

Flush.

Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

Live a balanced life - learn some and drink some and draw some and paint some and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

Take a nap every afternoon.

When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.

Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.

Goldfish and hamster and white mice and even the little seed in the Styrofoam cup - they all die. So do we.

And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all - LOOK.”

If you have a little one at home that will be 5 years old by December 31, it is time to register him/her for E.C.S. Please bring your child’s birth certificate with you to be copied. Pre-registration helps the school plan for the upcoming school year. If you are new to the community, please drop in to the school anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. We would love to show you around.

Welcome, kids. It’s time to start learning everything you need to know!

HALO AIR RESCUE FUNDRAISER

On Wednesday, May 15, our school, in conjunction with the Rolling Hills Community

Club, will stage a fundraiser for HALO Air Rescue.

HALO is pleased to offer the ONLY dedicated medivac helicopter for southern Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan. It is a much-needed contribution to the already established air and Alberta Health Services EMS ground ambulances. The availability of the helicopter improves response time to trauma victims in remote or inaccessible areas and increases their coverage area for delivering Qualitative Medical Care.

HALO has been dispatched to several emergencies in our area over the last several years, in some cases, a difference between life and death. For more information about HALO missions, please visit their website at www.halorescue.ca.

HALO has been funded exclusively through the donations of private individuals and responsible corporate partners. On May 15, the air ambulance will land in our playground at 11:00 a.m., and the pilot will give 100 grade 5/6 students from local schools a presentation on Air & Aerodynamics (Grade 6 Science Curriculum).

Lunch will be available to the public for a nominal fee. Look for tickets on a chance to win a hot air balloon ride (donated by Annette and Bill Dickinson) and a quilt handstitched by local Mennonite moms. Donation boxes and tax receipts will be available at the hall and the school. Please help us support this vital service.

THE FIRM FITNESS GYM

The Firm Fitness Facility is located in the Rolling Hills Community Centre, with private access on the east side of the building, through the northeast door.

A MESSAGE FROM GRANDPA GEORGE

In March, Darryl Janz and camera man John from CTV Calgary travelled to Rolling Hills to interview George Hemsing for a segment on Inspiring Albertan.

This was organized by Victor and Dorothy Lethbridge to honor George for all he has done for the community of Rolling Hills. It was George’s vision to build a hockey arena in Rolling Hills many years ago and he is so proud of this beautiful facility. At 81, George still puts in countless hours working with young skaters in George's Hockey, as well as maintaining both the arena and the golf course.

George would like to pass on this message of thanks to all that were involved in organizing and taking part in the special day at the arena when he was interviewed by Darryl Janz.

“Thank you to Victor and Dorothy Lethbridge for setting up the date and time with Darryl Janz and John (the camera man). Their

role in organizing this program was very well done. Darryl and John did a wonderful job of interviewing and filming, and the segment on CTV news was superb.

A special thank you to the Rolling Hills Ag. Society for establishing a scholarship in my name. I am very honored by all the comments I received from everyone who watched the segment on TV, as well as those who reached out via Facebook, by phone and in person.

A huge thank you goes out to all the kids, past and present, for 24 great years of George’s Hockey. Another special thank you to Chandler and Fletcher Aleman and Justin Tateson for attending. Thank you all.”

ANNUAL HALL CLEANING

The annual community hall cleaning will take place on Thursday, April 11, starting at 9:00 a.m. If this time does not work for you, please contact Lois Harrowing to set up an alternate time. Lunch will be supplied by Ingrid, Wendy, Lois and Lacey.

The Jr. high students will assist with this huge job. There is nothing like ‘kid power’ to get things done! Just one more way our students are learning the importance of volunteering in their community.

ADULT PICKLEBALL

Pickleball is held in the school gym every Monday and Wednesday evening, 7-9 p.m. This is a fun, easily learned sport with some excellent instruction.

No equipment necessary—just bring clean inside shoes. Come and see what it is all about!

Note, there will be no pickleball during the Easter break when the school is closed.

DUST OFF THOSE GOLF CLUBS!

The snow is gone and the tarps will soon be coming off the greens. That means golf season is just around the corner.

Everyone is invited to attend the Annual General Meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the club house. Watch the LED sign for info on opening date. For more info about green fees, annual memberships, tournaments or kitchen hours, contact the golf course at 403-964-2380.

PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Rolling Hills Public Library is open Monday and Wednesday evenings 7-9 p.m., and Wednesdays 9-11 a.m. and 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Get more from your local library! Your FREE membership gives you full borrowing privileges, use of Wi-Fi in the library, and access to all of our online services. This includes online newspapers from Library PressReader, ConsumerReports.org, and access to eBooks and LibraryToGo (Overdrive). You will also have full access to a broad collection of books, CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray movies in our catalogue. Visit http://rollinghills.shortgrass.ca/ and click on the tab Books and More to see all we have to offer.

If you wish to return your library books when the library is closed, please use the Book Drop Box located at the west entrance to the school.

Please note: The Public Library will be closed on Monday, April 22 for Easter Monday. The library will be open on the evening of April 24th.

SOUP & SANDWICH LUNCH

Everyone is invited to the Soup and Sandwich lunch at the Seniors’ Drop-in Centre on April 10. Come in for homemade soup, sandwiches and pie—all for only $5. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Oh, my, homemade pie!
