Labs / Practicals

The practical aspects will be addressed in Materials Labs Analysis and Simulation lab ‘Simulation lab’ on Thursday morning covers: Mechanics labs in Semester 1 Dynamics labs in Semester 2 Emphasis here is primarily on using computer simulation tools i.e.

Finite Element Analysis and Mechanism/Motion simulation. This is independent of Engineering Des, Analysis and Sim with C Doran.

Final Year Project The Final Year Project is the most important part of the

course as it demonstrates your ability to apply the knowledge and skills gained over the duration of your studies; to work independently and in a methodical manner, in the delivery of a substantial technical project.

Important stages in this activity will include:

- Project selection - Interim presentation - Planning structure of thesis (title / chapter headings) - Submit unbound to ensure layout/formatting are OK - Have thesis proof read to catch errors. - Submission of final bound thesis - Engineering Expo - Final presentation

Page 12: No Slide Title › staff › sdalton › ME4 › ME4... · Final Year Project Continued… Year long / Individual project /10 credits Desirable for a project to have a practical aspect

Final Year Project Continued… Year long / Individual project /10 credits Desirable for a project to have a practical aspect e.g.

physical testing or measurement. Projects may come from one of the following:

- List of projects presented by staff. - Ideas drawn from your own experience/interests. - Industrially based project.

It is essential that all projects contain a strong analytical / technical content.

It is essential that the engineering analysis carried out contains a level of mathematical treatment appropriate to a Bachelor of Engineering Honours degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Page 13: No Slide Title › staff › sdalton › ME4 › ME4... · Final Year Project Continued… Year long / Individual project /10 credits Desirable for a project to have a practical aspect

Project Selection Selection process.

- Project list to be posted on web (Dates as per HO) - Meet to discuss project ideas with staff (as per HO) - Submit Project preferences (Dates as per HO) - Project / Supervisor allocation (Dates as per HO)

Project hand-out and project proposal form circulated Thesis writing guidelines to be circulated later Notes on referencing and plagiarism to be circulated

Project

In the meantime give some thought to project ideas of your own.

Dedicated project slot to be timetabled / possibly Tuesday afternoon!.

Workshop slot in second semester

Mechanics-Finite Element Analysis Finite element analysis enables the designer to

analyse the stresses in a component. When a force is applied to a component stresses are induced. Finite element analysis enables the stresses to be determined. Blue represent low stress and Red represents high stress.

Dynamics-Mechanism Simulation 2d Mechanism Simulation enables the

user to evaluate the forces generated in a Mechanism using a simplified representation of the Mechanism.

Use of computer simulation

Computer simulation should never be taken at face value.

All analysis must be supported by manual calculation, or experimental work or both.
