Our first three weeks has set us off on a good start to a very busy term ahead of us.

Cultural Exchange Programs

Our two cultural exchanges have now taken place and we are very proud of our students who par-

ticipated and represented our school.

The Melbourne Cultural Exchange has a long history, beginning in 1988 to foster links between our

school and Genazzano and Xavier Colleges in Melbourne. From its beginnings the program aimed

to foster greater understanding, respect and tolerance for each other’s cultures and to encourage

students to become a positive voice in issues of social justice and reconciliation in today’s society. It

endeavours to heighten students’ awareness and appreciation of the Indigenous culture and diver-

sity of cultures which exist within our country. Congratulations and thank you to Teachers, Brad Car-

mody and Michelle Hamaguchi for your excellent coordination of the program, and to students Taj

Jamieson, Peter Burton, Dion Parriman, Lachlan McMahon, Abier Hamaguchi, Scartisha Ningella,

Tanaya Carter and Charm Johnson for representing your school.

Likewise, our Cultural Exchange program with our sister school in Japan has flourished and it was

rewarding to see how our school community appreciated and welcomed our visitors. Our students

were very proud to share their school and culture, and were happy to engage in dialogue and

communicate with their overseas visitors. Programs such as our cultural exchanges play a key role in

creating a brighter and enriched world. Thank you to our families who played host, to our teachers

and students for your warm welcome and to Renee Holmes, Michael Lake and Anthea Demin for

bringing it all together.

Parish Priest and College Chaplain

Fr Matt Digges has moved back to Sydney to undertake fur-

ther studies.

As a College community we thank Fr Matt for his outstanding

contribution to our College as Chaplain, member of the Col-

lege Board and the College Leadership Team. We also thank

Fr Matt for his great work assisting students and families in our

College community and throughout the Broome Parish

We welcome Monsignor Paul Boyers who is no stranger to our

Parish and to our College, having spent ten years as Adminis-

trator of the Broome parish in the 1980’s.

Monsignor Paul has already attended our assemblies and has been mingling with our students and

staff at school. We look forward to have him provide spiritual support and direction to students, staff

and our families of the school community.

Presentation Night

The date for Presentation Night is now Monday 26 October, moved from Friday 30 October com-

mencing at 6.00pm. There will be further information as the event becomes closer, however please

mark this date in your calendars as every student will be expected to attend.

Our preparations for 2016 have already commenced on Secondary!! Year 10 students have spent some

time with Learning Area Co-ordinators finding out a little more about the subjects on offer for Year 11 next

year. These talks will continue this week and culminate in our Parent Information evening next Wednesday

at 5.30pm. A letter has been sent home to all Year 10 parents/caregivers outlining the format of the night. It

is expected that all students and their carers are in attendance on this night. After the information night

Parents and students will meet with staff to discuss their subject selections. We will then look at what options

the 2016 Year 11 cohort want to study and try to develop a timetable that meets that needs of as many

students as possible.

With the changes to the WACE for 2016, it is assumed that all Year 11 students will continue with their studies

in the same subjects in 2016. There will not be a parent information sessions this year for the current Year 11

students. At the start of 2016 we will gather and discuss options for further study in 2107 and what the pro-

cesses are for students applying for university entry.

Our Secondary assembly will occur next week on Wednesday at 8.00am in our Drama undercover area, if

any parent would like to come along. At this assembly we acknowledge students who have made an ex-

ceptional contribution to life at the college either in or out of the classroom.

Catholic Performing Arts

Music students, Jada Hunter and Byron Pigram travelled to Perth with their Teacher, Ms Robyn Christie for

the Catholic Performing Arts solo vocal competition last week. Jada has since received word that she has

been awarded an Award of Merit for her performance which is great news. Well done Jada and Byron –

we are very proud of you.

Reminder to Parents of Year 6 students

Some weeks ago a letter was distributed to parents of our current Year Six class. The next major step in your

child’s learning journey will be stepping into Year Seven in 2016. Being able to make that step with the sup-

port of a strong cohort is a particular advantage of being enrolled in St Mary’s College as a K-12 school.

For planning and timetabling purposes the College administration would appreciate it if you could com-

municate your intentions for your child’s schooling in 2016. Thank you to the parents who have already sent

your intentions back to Mr Dave and Miss Harriet. If you have not done so yet, or if you would like to ask any

questions, please contact my PA, Ms Anthea Demin on 9194 9502. Please remember to mark in your diaries Tuesday 16 September, our Information and Open Night for Year 7,

2016 students and parents. The evening will start at 5:00pm with an ‘Open Evening Tour’ followed by a

Parent/Student Information session at 6.00pm followed by a Sausage Sizzle.

Congratulations

I am happy to share the exciting news that one of our parents, Mrs Rose Mitch-

ell has won the PFFWA Award of Excellence in Building Positive School Commu-

nities. This is in recognition of the outstanding contribution that Rose has made

as our past P&F President for many years. I take this opportunity to congratulate

Rose and acknowledge that she has worked tirelessly and actively for the ben-

efit of the school and the students over many years, providing positive out-

comes for our school community.

Rose is keen to also acknowledge the outstanding team of parents who have

supported and shared in the great work of the Parents and Friends of St Mary’s

College.

Safe Travels to Year 6 students

Finally, I wish our Year 6 travellers and their teachers safe travels as they set off on the long awaited camp

to our capital city, Canberra on Sunday. I acknowledge the commitment of our staff who work solidly to

ensure that the students will have top quality learning experiences, and I have confidence that the camp

will be a successful and memorable one. Thank you Dave Wilkinson, Harriet Hemmings, Ed Connor, Sonny

Dann, Kelrick McKenna, Coby Rhatigan and all your helpers for your dedication and commitment.

I also wish to acknowledge the generosity of the friends of our College and the wider Broome community

who through their support helped to make this camp possible.

Saint Mary of the Cross

This week we celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Mary MacKillop also known as St Mary of the Cross who is

Australia’s first Saint. She was only canonised recently on 17th October 2010. We celebrate her feast day on

8th August. One of her most famous quotes is an important message `Never see a need without doing

something about it’. This Solemnity is an opportunity to contemplate St Mary of the Cross’ remarkable life,

her sense of social justice and her enormous contribution to education and as a champion of the poor, vul-

nerable and marginalised. St Mary of the Cross is an important Saint to us as teachers as we serve children

in our community.

Sacrament of Confirmation

Last Saturday evening the students preparing for their sacrament of Confirmation participated in the com-

mitment Mass to commence their sacramental journey for Confirmation. It was wonderful to celebrate this

special time with candidates, families and the parish community. Students will be participating in a Retreat

Day in the lead up to their Confirmation Mass.

Words Their Way

The primary campus have been exploring the use of Words Their Way program. At program meeting with

teachers early in the year it was established that it would be useful to have some professional learning sur-

rounding this. We were able to access support from CEWA office and Fiona Glumac was able to come

and attend a Professional Learning session for teachers and then follow up meetings with teaching teams.

A huge thanks to Miss Keryn and Beth Graham from CEWA Broome Office for arranging this opportunity for

our teachers. We look forward to sharing some of the fabulous things we learnt with students and families.

Year 6 Camp

This Sunday our Year 6 students with 6 staff will be flying to Canberra for our Year Six Camp. There is a great

deal of excitement surrounding the trip and we wish everyone well. This camp would not have happened

without the dedication of the Year Six Camp team, led by Mr Dave. We wish all of the students and staff

Miss Harriet, Mr Ed, Mr Sonny and Mr Kello all the best for a fun and invigorating learning experience. We will

be sure to send some photos through and keep you posted.

Professional Learning for staff

This week Miss Janenell and Mr Ken have been in Perth participating in the Aboriginal Leaders Program. Mr

Ed has been at First Aid Training. Our Diploma students Mr Joseph, Mr Kello, Miss Margie, Mr Prince, Miss

Reannan and Mr Sonny have been busily working on their final projects for their studies. It is great to have

all this learning going on for our staff.

After School Activities

We have had some after school activities commence this term thanks to our committed staff. It has been

fabulous to see how engaged the students are in Surfing, Athletics, Touch Football. We have also had a

group of parents with support of the P&F commence a Craft club. A flyer has gone home inviting students

and families to join this group.

P&F Disco

This Friday we are having our annual P&F disco. The crazy hair disco is going to be super exciting and thank

you to our committed parents and families for organising this opportunity for us to come together as a

community and have fun! See you on Friday afternoon.

Book Week

We have some exciting events for our Book Week once again this year, thanks to our fabulous Miss Di lead-

ing the way. Book Week is only two weeks away so get your thinking caps on for your costumes!

Book Week Launch – Tuesday 25th August at 1:45pm

Storytelling Night – Wednesday 26th August at 6:00pm

Book Week Parade – Friday 28th August at 10:45am

Thanks for a great start to Term Three, it has been wonderful to see so many students engaged in their

learning opportunities and having such fun at school! Looking forward to a busy and eventful term. Have a

fabulous fortnight.

FROM HEAD OF PRIMARY Coby Rhatigan

Thank you to all the parents and carers who came along to our Parent Teacher interviews in Week 2. It was

great to touch base with so many of you. If you were unable to attend and would like to catch up with

your child’s teachers, it is often best if you contact them by email. If you have any concerns at any time,

please feel free to contact the College.

KINDY EXCURSION Kindy bus ride around Broome

As part of our learning this Term, the Kindy Kids went out to explore being part of a community

in Broome. After reading the story ‘Looking for Bobby’ we visited some iconic places, like Street-

ers Jetty. And we viewed and shared where we live in Broome.

MORE MUSICAL MOMENTS Our music students have had a very busy year performing at the Principal dinner, our Sunset Soiree and then travelling to Perth. Once again our SMC elective Music students have shown themselves to be well rehearsed and ‘up with the best of them’.

Jada Hunter and Byron Pigram tr avelled to Per th dur ing week two to take par t in the Catholic Per forming Ar ts Festi-val as solo singers. The competition on the day had students from Chisholm Catholic College and Irene McCormack Catholic College to name just two.

Both Jada and Byron can be very proud of their performances as they took to the stage with confidence and sang with clarity and a great emotional commitment to their chosen songs. We all had a great time hearing the other students perform and real-ising that being in SMC Broome is certainly not holding us back. All it takes is commitment to dedicated practise. I would hope to see many more of our musicians/singers taking part next year.

A Massive Congratulations to Jada for receiving a Certificate of Merit in the Secondary Vocal Solo/Duet section of the festi-val.

CONGRATULATIONS again to Jada and Byron for representing the Music department so professionally.

If you enjoy boating and fishing, come to an informative, practical and fun information ses-sion to make your fishing trips safer. Present-ers will demonstrate the use of basic safety equipment and discuss emergency proce-dures. There will be boats on display, a free sausage sizzle and some games. You might even pick up some handy fishing tips! All the family is welcome. Parking will be available in the Guy St entrance carpark and along Port Dve. See you there!

SISTER SCHOOL VISIT Last week for the eighth consecutive year St Mary’s College hosted students and adults from our sister town in Japan. It was a very short but productive time. Not only does this program have valuable historic and cultural links between the two towns, but it allowed students to interact with and learn from people who are different from themselves. Our host students and their families played a vital role in this exchange, and we appreciate their generosity and involve-ment. Thank you to Ruby and Rose Hamaguchi and family, Juanne and Nicholas Ignacio and family, Anton Diss and family, Nav and Sabita Latchman and family, Ben Lake and family and Bohemia Crawford and family. Staff, students and St Mary’s community members are also to be thanked for being so welcoming and for guiding our students to develop a greater understanding of diversity and to develop positive relationships with others in our multi-cultural community.

OUTDOOR ED ON PRIMARY WITH MR ED

This term has seen some exciting excursions happening for the Outdoor Education for Boys program at the Primary School. We visited the Clontarf Football Academy and were given a talk by Jack Reagan about the philosophy and aims of the academy and we found that many of them were very similar to our own. They have a four quarter ap-proach to their academy which focuses on attendance, school work, training and behaviour. The academy also aims to engage the students more with school and the community. The boys then got to use the Clontarf room and had a great time playing table tennis and pool. In Week 2 we were lucky enough to visit the Kimberley District Police Sta-tion here in Broome. We were given a very warm welcome by all of the staff at the Police Station and were given a tour by the 2 Community Liaison Officers Monica Lee and Viv Hunter. They told the boys all about the great work that the police do for the community and gave us an idea of how all of the teams in the station work together to keep the community safe. Sergeant Simon then came and answered a lot of questions that the boys had, he even passed around a pair of handcuffs! A huge thank you to all of the staff at the Police Station for making us feel so welcome, I think we have quite a few boys who are dreaming of joining the force one day!

From the sport desk Welcome back to Term 3. The last week of Term 2 saw St Mary’s par-

ticipate in another successful Kimberley Cup carnival. Approximately

120 students and 10 staff worked very hard during the 4 days to

achieve success in Volleyball, Basketball, Netball, Indoor Soccer, AFL,

Mixed Netball and Mixed Basketball. At this point I would like to ex-

tend sincere thanks to all the staff who gave up many hours to coach

then supervise for the 4 very long days at BRAC. It is also an opportune

time to recognise the fantastic efforts of LATISHA SCOTT who for the

last 2 years has coached the Girls soccer squad after school and during

the carnival. From all of us at St Mary’s a huge thank you for every-

thing. Once again our students conducted themselves with poise and

maturity. It was with great pride that staff could say we belonged to

the St Mary’s team.

Success in the NETBALL and BOYS SOCCER was a highlight of our par-

ticipation whilst we were runners up in GIRLS SOCCER. The following

students were recognised for their excellence in different sports.

SMC Book Club update

Last Tuesday the SMC Book Club had their in-

augural meeting in the Secondary Library

where they discussed the modern classic

Goodnight Mr Tom. The students thoroughly

enjoyed reading this

heart-warming and at

times confronting text;

they too found the

novel’s World War II

context fascinating.

choice is the critically

acclaimed Lord of the

Black Swan State Theatre’s Blithe Spirit Last Saturday, we went to see Black Swan State theatre’s live broadcast of ‘Blithe Spirit’ by Noel Coward at the Sun Pic-tures. The play was broadcast from the Heath Ledger State Theatre in Perth. The play was set in the 1940s and surrounds the life of an upper-class married couple in West End, Britain. The husband, Charles, needs some help with his latest novel so he and his wife invite a medium over in the hope that she can help him with his writers’ block. Unknowingly to the medi-um, Charles’ ex-wife, Elvira, was summoned. With his cur-rent wife (Ruth) thinking he has gone mad, Charles must find a way to live with his dead ex-wife and his distressed current wife. By the end of the play, Elvira has killed Ruth and Charles is living with the ghosts of both his wives. Inter-estingly, the set was confined to only the one room! We loved it and had a great laugh! By Sophie Pipe and Dako-ta Leak ( Year 9 students)

Black Swan State Theatre Workshop Hey guys, this is Grace and Alicia; your favourite drama Goddesses. We just wanted to share our experi-ence at the Black Swan Theatre workshop last Friday with the famous Chrissie Parrott. We had so much fun learning how to create exciting and dynamic movement sequences that could be used in dance and drama. It gave us a great insight into the performance industry and allowed us to spend time with a profes-sional director! We were invited to attend the rehearsal of Chrissie’s upcoming production of ‘The Red Balloon’ which we hope to attend while we are in Perth for our ATAR practical exams. #dramasquadout

Girls Football Win

The second annual Girls' AFL football carnival took place this week on our oval. The St Mary's team faced off against

two spirited Broome Senior High School sides. Congratulations to our girls who came out firing and certainly showed off

their talent and sports-womanship all morning.

Captain Clarissa Churchill gave an inspiring performance all over the ground, while star forward Breanna Uhl kicked

many goals. Young guns Katelyn Parriman, Adi Cox and Charlisha Mung played their hearts out and proved to be

indispensable members of the squad. Scartisha Ningella played a blinder in the ruck and was deservingly awarded

most valuable player for our side.

We are proud to say that the St Mary’s College team came out the champions!

We extend a big thanks to Annie Dann from Garnduwa for organising the event, and to Michael Farmer for umpiring

on the day. Many thanks and congratulations also to our staff members, Rebecca Famlonga and Amy Meeuwissen

who proudly coached and encouraged our girls. We look forward to bigger and better things in 2016 as we defend

our title!
