Presentation Evening
Our Presentation Night held on Friday was an opportunity to celebrate the many achievements and wide-
ranging talents of our students from Years K-12, to officially recognise the 2019 Senior SRC representatives and
to officially farewell the Class of 2018. The evening was also a wonderful opportunity for us to officially recog-
nise the outstanding contribution made by Mr Brian Kane, BK over the past 40 years at St Mary’s and Nulungnu
College in Broome. Congratulations to all student performers and award winners. Thank you to every staff
member who contributed their time and effort to ensure the evening was a great success. To all par-
ents, guardians, family members, College partners and sponsors, thank you for your commitment to supporting
the students at St Mary’s College and for joining with us for the very memorable occasion to celebrate student
achievement throughout 2018.
Year 12 Graduation
Yesterday, Monday 22 October, we farewelled our Year 12’s during their Graduation Assembly, Mass and Year

Year 12 Coordinator, Ms Rebecca Famlonga for her great work in coordinating these important events. I take
this opportunity to acknowledge all families of Year 12 students for the association and commitment to our Col-
lege over many years. Our role in educating each child is always made easier thanks to the ongoing support
and encouragement from all of the families, friends and members of the community who support each stu-
dent. To all of the parents, grandparents and guardians of our Class of 2018, you can all be proud of your sons
and daughters’ achievements and for the very special person that each student has become. On behalf of
the staff at the College
we thank you all for your
support and for entrust-

Residential College Awards Night
The Broome Residential College conducted their annual awards night last Wednesday evening. The event was a
wonderful celebration of 2018 and an opportunity to recognise student talent, commitment to Residential College life
and achievement throughout 2018. Mr Michael Gilmour, Manager of the Residential College and his Staff hosted the
night, which was attended by students, families, staff from St Marys College and BSHS as well as many partner organi-
sations of the Residential College. Congratulations to the many St Mary’s College students who received awards dur-
ing the evening.
All Saints Day November 1 - All Souls Day November 2
All Saints and All Souls Day will be celebrated next week. All Saints Day is the day on our liturgical calendar when we
as Catholics remember all Saints known and unknown. Next week on Friday November 2, the Our Lady Queen of
Peace Parish will celebrate Mass at 5.00pm in the Broome Cemetery. This day specifically commemorates and re-
members the faithful departed in our community. I look
forward to seeing many of our families at this spe-
cial Mass.
Movie Night
My sincere thanks to the St Mary’s College P&F who or-
ganised our annual ‘Movie Night’ fundraiser which was
held on Friday 12th October and thank you to the par-
ents and staff members who worked to make the event
such a great success. My thanks also to all the many
businesses and community members of Broome who
provided food and raffle prizes sold on the night to con-
tribute to the funds raised to support the teaching and
learning programs for our students throughout 2019.
College Board and P and F Annual General Meetings – Our College Board AGM will
be held on Wednesday 21 November commencing at 7.00pm in the Hospitality
and Tourism Centre on the secondary campus. Immediately following the College
Board AGM our College Parents & Friends AGM will be held. Parents and communi-
ty members are encouraged to attend these two important meetings of our school
community. Following the meetings which are traditionally very short, will be an op-
portunity to have a light supper and refreshments.
Congratulations Matilda Moase— Matilda is part of the
X-tension team at the local dance studio, Broome Performing Arts Co-op.
During the holidays she performed along with her fellow dancers in Melbourne
at the KAR Competition.
We could not be any prouder of these country kids walking in and smashing it in
the big city! They have worked really hard all year and did exceptionally well plac-
ing first in every category entered
Term 4 is an extremely important term for all students and as the Year 12 students begin their journey away from the
College the Year 7 -11 students need to remember that their school year still has not finished and there is much work
still to be done.
Year 12 students from St Mary’s will begin their WACE Exams on Monday 29th October and have all been given an
individual timetable which has their student number and must be taken to each exam. Students are reminded that
they must arrive at the examination venue at least 30 minutes before the exam. All examinations will be held at the
University of Notre Dame and students will be sitting their exams with students from Broome SHS.
OLNA Results
OLNA results have been received at the College and have been distributed to all Year 10 to 12 students. These results
have been particularly pleasing with numerous students improving their result, some in more than one area, and
many students finally accomplishing the full requirements.
NAPLAN Results
NAPLAN results have also been received by the College and have been posted to all families. There have been sig-
nificant improvements in Year 9 particularly in Numeracy since the introduction of the Maths Pathway program onto
the Secondary campus and Spelling through the targeted intervention programme organised by Ms Amy Meeuwissen
and Ms Diana Jans. Hopefully these results are indications of further improvement in the years to come.
Years 10 and 11
Year 11 Exams will begin on Monday 12th November and conclude Friday 16th November. An examination timetable
will be available to all Year 10 and 11s by the end of this week. For students to graduate from Secondary School and
be eligible for a WACE certificate they must have a minimum of 14 C grades over Years 11 and 12. Now is the time for
Year 11s to make sure they do not let themselves down by not working hard all the way to the end of the year.
Years 8 and 9
All Year 8 and 9 students will also be having exams beginning on Monday 19th November. One of the purposes of
middle school exams at St Mary’s is to give students the opportunity to practice sitting exams so that they are pre-
pared for their senior years. The exams will increase in length as students move from Year 8 to Year 10 and increase in
intensity. Students need to be able to retain information for an extended period to pass senior secondary exams. The
weighting of exams will also increase as the student’s progress through the College. If parents have any questions
about exams, please contact me at [email protected] or by ringing reception on 9194 9504.

Wirlburu K – 6 Art Exhibition
The Wirlburu K – 6 Art Exhibition was an exciting event in September, when the Primary Art Room was
transformed from a working studio into a beautiful art gallery featuring. The aim of the exhibition was to
showcase, recognise and celebrate the primary students’ excellent artistic endeavours.
This was the 18th year of the Wirlburu art exhibition and the third year it has been combined with the Pri-
mary Learning Journey Evening - making it a truly memorable occasion. The positive feedback and ap-
preciation of the artworks from the community was a credit to all our aspiring young artists.
A special feature of this exhibition was the People’s Choice Awards where everyone who viewed the art-
works had the opportunity to vote for their favourite artist in each year level. The winners were:

PRESENTAION NIGHT
5P is Loving the New Play Area
If you were wondering what has been hap-
pening in the Year 4/5 play area, we are
here to tell you!
Before everything happened there were
four 4 Square courts. There was a big tree
next to one of the courts, and also some
frangipanis. Anyway it all started in a big
cyclone with strong winds and powerful
rain. The cyclone pulled down the trees and
damaged plants.
At the end of the cyclone there was a tree
knocked over on the 4 Square court and
there was leaves everywhere. Builders and
the maintenance men came to school and
started to clean it all up. After that every-
body came back to school. The architect
came to Year 5 and asked for ideas for a
new playground. We had the choice of many things. We were visited by an architect and we had to
vote.
After lots of fundraising and waiting, the Year 4s and 5s returned to school to school last week to find
that over the holidays builders had come in to make our exciting new playground.
We thank all the architects and builders for the hard work and effort they put into our new play ground.
We appreciate and love our new equipment, thank you so much.
