NOACH
The story of Noach takes place after ten generations, from Adam
to Noach. Noach is the last man alive who still knew Adam
Harishon.
The Torah tells us that the earth was corrupt in Hashem's eyes and
was filled with violence. Only Noach found favor and grace with
the Lord. Regretful and weary of the evil of mankind, Hashem
decides to destroy all living flesh on the earth through a great
flood. Hashem visits with Noach and tells him to build an ark, to
take aboard is wife, his three sons and their wives, along with
seven pairs of each species of clean beast and fowl, one pair of
each species of unclean beast and fowl, and a sufficient food
supply.
The flood arrives heavy and strong, and even the mountain
peaks are covered with water. After forty days and nights the
rain subsides and the ark comes to rest on Mount Ararat. Noach
exits the ark along with his family and all the animals to begin a
new life. Noach offers a sacrifice to Hashem, and in return
Hashem promises never again will he bring a flood to destroy
mankind. The rainbow is presented as a symbol and reminder of
this covenant.
Hashem presents Noah and his sons with the seven Noahdite
commandments to live by. (These established guidelines appear
long before Avraham comes onto the scene.) Mankind
multiplies and flourishes only to once again flex his muscles and
build a tower to heaven and try to confront God. Hashem
defeats this arrogance by simply confounding their language so
they could no longer understand each other. The result is
argument amongst the workers who then are dispersed
throughout the world. The Parsha then concludes with a
enealogical account of the ten generations from Shem to
Avraham.
The Bible's depiction of the story of Noach has given historians
and archaeologists the ability to prove the historical accuracy of
the Torah.
Today, we live in the generation of technology. Here in the west,
we have freedom of expression and speech. Yet with this new
found freedom and expression we have a responsibility to act in
a moral and ethical way. Similarly to the generations of Adam
and Noach, we have perhaps lost our way and need a
correction to guide us back towards the paths of justice and
righteousness. Let us hope and pray that we will see the light
ourselves before, God forbid, something else comes to clear the
way. A difficult if not impossible task today, But one we must
confront and overcome.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Gabe Elias
PARASHAH NOACH
In our Parasha we encounter two unique and distinct
stories of two different generations. The first generation,
the Dor HaMabul, the generation of the flood, was sen-
tenced by Hakadosh Baruch Hu to be annihilated,
wiped clean by a deluge of continuous rain for 40 days
and nights. The second generation, known as the Dor
Haflaga, attempted to challenge G-d by erecting a
tower which would reach the Heavens, known in English
as the Tower of Babel. It adopted this name because of
their ultimate punishment, where Hashem mixed and
confused their communication with a multitude of lan-
guages, causing disunity and incoherent 'babbling.'
This raises an obvious question, namely, why was the de-
cree placed on the Dor HaMabul utter destruction,
whereas the Dor Haflaga were essentially dismantled,
but not destroyed? Rashi, when discussing the sin of the
Tower of Babel, explains the distinction. What was the
primary sin of the Generation of the Flood? Chazal tell us
it was Chamas, violence and lawlessness between man
and man. Men engaged in physical altercations,
grabbed others' possessions and property with impunity.
In other words, a complete breakdown of humanity and
the 'settlement of the world,' the Yishuvo shel Olam. The
Generation of the Tower of Babel on the other hand,
ironically, used their creative capacity, intellect, and hu-
man ingenuity to work harmoniously with one another to
challenge the supremacy of G-d! Which is worse, treat-
ing other humans unethically or attacking Hashem?
Rashi answers that Hashem, k'v'yahcol, could withstand
the personal attack against Him, but could't counte-
nance His sons fighting with one another and witness the
breakdown of communal harmony and accord.
What a rewarding and revealing message for the Torah
to convey at the beginning of our journey. Yes, Hashem
created the world as a conduit to connect to Him, but
the continuance of the world (Kiyumo) is dependent on
how we treat each other, our Middot as they relate Bein
Adam L'Chaveiro.
Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Yehuda Moses
